** VIDEO correction ** In the video, I mentioned they have been growing for 3 months, but in reality, they have been growing for about 12 weeks.

Haven't watched the whole video yet but I nicked my nasturnum seed before I put it in water.
My new favorite plant!
Thank you for this video, I'm hoping to grow nasturtiums this year in my garden. I just sowed the seeds few days ago, hopefully they germinate soon.
I really like seeing the whole journey of the nasturtium in your garden. I’d be keen to see other videos like this on other plants 😊

We have had a lot of rain here lately, so that is pushing them tremendously!
Your nasturiums are very pretty - one note - they don't really need fertilizing - that's why you have so much leaf and not as much flower... if you don't fertilize any more you will probably get more flowers - nasturium do prefer a poorer soil than many plants.

I have nasturtium in my yard too and wanted to mention they don't benefit from fertilizing unless you want to encourage a leafier plant. My mom had nasturtium in our backyard when I was little. She used to call them weeds because they grew so well with very little help. She'd even pull out large areas of the climbing type off the back fence - within a couple of months more blooms & very happy plant. Thanks for your channel.

You don't have to wait for the seeds to grow more. You could cut the vines, remove several of the lower leaves, direct plant in soil, and they will be very quick to flower. If you want more flowers, do not fertilize at all. They literally thrive in poor soil.
Yes you do have the trailing nasturtium 5 ft in length they are amazing -planted with certain vegetables to help deter bugs something that I will be planting quite prolifically this year …diversity is key in the gardens…do you eat the buds or pickle them? Used as capers in many dishes they have a peppery flavor and when used in salads the flowers really add quite a sparkle of elegance and surprise…Supposedly a natural antibiotic for us as well …I still remember these 50 years ago in my aunts garden…obviously they knew things about these amazing plants we have long since forgotten…beautiful garden…thank you for sharing

@@SoilandMargaritas Pretty sure it’s less than 2 weeks. But it’s so hands off. I don’t even soak them beforehand, I’m just sure to keep the whole pot watered well. In fact I direct sowed other annuals below my potted figs as soon as I brought them out in the spring and they’re growing really well. That way I didn’t have to mess with digging into the figs root system, the annuals find their own way when planted from seed. Gazania and nemophila both worked really well this way 😀

I grew mine from seed this year for the first time and I love them but our heat and humidity hear is killing them already. I have one in some shade and that is growing better. But our 97 degree days they don’t love. I’m going to try them earlier next year so they can grow well in spring. Yours look gorgeous! I have cherry rose and a deep wine kind. I’d like to get a variegated one for next year.

Hi. Beautiful!!!!!! So I started seeding inside the nasturtiums and they are growing very well. What’s the smallest container that they can be planted in and still thrive? Thank you ! Maria

Maria, I really do not know since I don't grow them indoors, I would say try a gallon size container per plant and see how they do.

Do Nasturtium prefer dry or moist soil?
I grow these from seed every year. This is the first year I got them to grow large, but now the heat has come and they’re all dead. Should I plant them in the shade? I’m in zone 8a. Also, are yours on drip?
@SoilandMargaritas
3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Mine are not on drip, this is my second year growing them, these varieties seem to be better at handling full true sun because last year, the one variety I had did not like it in full sun but it did better in semi shade... I think it depends on varieties.
When you’re using them as a trap crop, how do you manage them - trim and trash individual stems, spray aphids off with water, apply insecticidal soap?
@SoilandMargaritas

Hey, so, last year I didn't have any major issues with pests, BUT I have heard you trim and trash the infected areas when it happens.

@@SoilandMargaritas thanks. Mine were such a major aphid trap it was gross! And of course they were the black ones instead of green so they really stood out. 🥴 I ended up trimming and trashing until eventually the plants were gone. Planted more this year, so we’ll see....
Help! Only 2 of my seeds germinated! They are growing nicely but why didn’t the others take? After 3 weeks I poked in the soil and found the swollen seed but still no sprout 😕 what did I do wrong?? Yours look fantastic!

Thank you! Oh man, I wish I knew... sometimes it is too dry or too wet, sometimes the seeds are not viable and there is nothing you can do... Maybe purchase your seeds from a different place next time.
I’ve read that nasturtiums don’t like fertilizer. I made the mistake of fertilizing before I read it. It says that fertilizer encourages leaf growth but few blooms. What do you think? Your garden is gorgeous 👋🏽🌱🌱
@SoilandMargaritas

Hey! That makes sense, although I’m totally ok with no blooms, everything else in that container will get fertilizer at some point or another so I can’t stop that. I just love how they are looking right now

My nasturtium has white little spots on the leaves. Any tips on how I can treat it?
@SoilandMargaritas
Ай бұрын
I am not sure, unfortunately AND fortunately, nasturtiums are trap plants, so the pests go for them first instead of your other plants, thats one of the main reasons people choose them.
Can you direct sow them?
@SoilandMargaritas
2 жыл бұрын
Yes!
🌱The Nartusiums you are showing at 4:25 indicate that the soil is too rich. Nasturtiums need to be grown in a position in full sun. They grow best in reasonably poor, well-drained soil. If the soil is too rich, too much foliage will be produced at the expense of flowers and may grow above the flowers, hiding them from view.🌱

Poorer soil and no fertilizer means they will flower better. Good soil and fertilizer will produce more leaves.
