    I'm a puzzler who normally doesn't look at the box or poster (if included) and I definitely think it's a HUGE advantage to not rely too heavily on the image when speed puzzling. Because the more you look at the box/poster, the more time you take away from actually putting pieces together. Don't look at the details on the box, look at the details on the pieces! However you'd be a fool to not look at the box while speed puzzling. The biggest disadvantage to not looking at the box, is you don't know where the different sections you're putting together relate to each other. So you end up with these bigger puzzle pieces "islands" which may have to be moved around, and that can take precious time too especially if they crumble as you move them. So use the box as a rough reference, you know the house go there, the puppy goes there, the flowers there etc. But don't spend too much time staring at the box for the little details. Use the details on the pieces.

    You are so on point! I think with Ravensburger it’s easier because you can usually lift piece ”islands” rather easily without them crumbling. But with some brand there is no chance of lifting or moving anything afterwards. Been there done that 😅 It has been a big aha moment for me to also just put pieces together as I see them fit and wonder later where they go image-wise. Previously I didn’t put any pieces together if I didn’t see them in the image. Obviously this was NOT a concious decision. Just a habit I never even thought I had… However I have to say that last year’s second Kristin seems to have more my style of puzzling and looking at the image. But as said, I think this is more about style than a strategy. After all I was still the fastest here in competitions before I realised I could be even faster if I let my habit go a little bit. I would love to see some scientists do some real research on these puzzle things to see what can be proven statistically be the best ways 😁

    I will be there and still have to find partner(s) for team and pair. Two days ago the WJPC platform enabled contacting other participants... Excited to have you also on the commentary booth! 🙂 Finally, I am glad that you liked my suggestion of trying round puzzles also. Probably we won't see them at this years Worlds - who knows. But doing a round puzzle (or any random cut one) gives new inputs, since the piece shapes gain importance compared to color and texture. Especially for me, who is using the box image quite (too) much, this feels like a good training.

    Yeah, that is such a great feature from them. I hope everyone will find their teams and be able to participate to the fullest. And you are right, round puzzles are good practice. I also have these shaped(?) puzzles like zebra but without any background so it's literally just the zebra and shape of it. :) I'm looking forward to seeing you in Spain!

    Well, at least you will get good practice for competing which is a skill of its own. And as I said, you never know, you might surprise yourself. When I participated in my very first competition, I actually improved my personal best time with like 20 minutes - out of nowhere??? :D Will you participate in all three categories; individual, pair, and team? :)

    Yes you can! This is a question many wonder, including myself last year as we did not have an association in Finland. Most countries don’t have association. The WJPC is open for anyone to register to compete in their website. There is no need to prove your level or have competition experience. So please join us! I think as this sport gets more popular, there might be different rules in the future.

    I'm going! \🤩/ But I don't look at the reference image that much and just like you said, I have difficulties at the end when I get dizzy with all the last pieces... 😄 Also: I have never finished a 500 piece puzzle in under 90 minutes on the first try!! 😳 Do you think I have any chance of getting faster...? ^^

  • @puzzlewithemilia

    @puzzlewithemilia

    I'm 100% sure that you have all the chances for that! I don't know if using more a reference image could make you faster. I know both fast and slow puzzlers from both "styles". We are only one month away so there might be too little time to fully change that since anything completely new style would take some time to learn. However, I think I have one training tip for you that could help and be done separately. This practice is not at all about speed so don't even try to do it fast. This is how it works; choose a puzzle, keep all the pieces in the box or in a pile on the table (aka don't spread and flip them), just take one piece at a time, look at the piece, and look at the reference image and put the piece on its right place based on the image. So basically as you pick pieces randomly and put them in the right places, it will take some time until anything is attached to each other. Let me know if this made any sense or maybe I should send you a demonstration video :D I haven't practiced this knowingly but I do it quite often to entertain my guests and show off my "crazy skills" with this "give me any piece and I will tell you where it goes" trick. Omg me and my ego... :D
