It's not a must ,to do editing in PC. Editing is possible in PC ,if it's needed afterwards.

You can directly open the presentation in your mobile and can set background easily by clicking edit option. Click on 'Design' and there on the image background, insert from the device/ album

You might have gone wrong in placing the picture.You can edit it again in WPS and drag the picture properly in its place.

When you start with a presentation,it will appear blank. Can select from templates if needed,or can continue with the blank slide inserting picture/colour background.
