Aside from painting with watercolors on paper, you can paint on watercolors with canvas.
You can prepare a canvas for painting by applying a couple of coats of absorbent ground to it. There's also QoR watercolor ground that has more texture.
Some artists paint directly on the gessoed canvas but the colors can lift a little bit when you paint over them with additional layers.
The absorbent ground helps the watercolor paint to adhere to canvas.
You can also use absorbent ground for painting on wood with watercolors. In the video I apply it to a small hardboard with a paint roller.

Thank you so much for making this video!!
Great video. Super helpful. Thank you, Sir!!
That was very informative. I wanted to see you paint with watercolor on the absorbent ground though. I’m going to try this. Thanks!

Thanks! I have two videos where I paint on the absorbent ground. One is on canvas kzread.info/dash/bejne/emqAuMWnp8vKebg.html and the other is on a wood panel kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zq2s1sixmq_LfbA.html
Thank you😊
One thing that works for me is raking the surface of a cheaper canvas with steel wool. So long as you only move in one direction the marks look kinda nice. I really only use this because I try to avoid spending a lot of money on the hobby, so it might not work for everyone, but if you're looking for a cheap option it's a good one!

Thanks for the tip! If you’re looking for an inexpensive paper to practice on, Stonehenge aqua is decent. 🖌
3:15 epic humor here 😂
Can I use Killz? To cover my cotton canvas? Thank you 🖌
Cool maybe you can made for beginers
What does a watercolor painting look like after you do this prep? Also do you use your regular watercolor brushes to paint the picture on the prepared canvas?

Here's a video where I paint a cityscape with watercolors on canvas. kzread.info/dash/bejne/emqAuMWnp8vKebg.html And here's another watercolor painting on a wood panel prepared with absorbent ground kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zq2s1sixmq_LfbA.html I hope this helps! 🙂
How hard is it to paint on 100% cotton paper and then stretch it over a canvas? I want to repaint a watercolor I did years ago for my daughter, for my 2 month old granddaughter…
How did you figure if you’d missed some place? You’re sure it covers the whole surface just by doing two coats?

at 1:34 I show how you can tilt the canvas to see where you applied it, the wet areas are glossy and look different than the plain canvas. If you do that for both applications, you probably covered the entire surface.

@@ChrisBreier thank you
If my canvas is three times primed, do I still need to do this?

Yes, because the gesso that they use isn't as absorbent as the ground that I use in the video.🙂
Absorbant ground instead of gesso?

Golden says that it’s not intended as a gesso substitute and that it should be applied over an absorbent toothy surface. Here’s their page about absorbent ground if want to read more about it. education.goldenpaints.com/technicalinfo_absorb
