Tiny Tips Ep. 10 - Absorbent ground for a better painting surface

I was looking for something to improve the painting surface for acrylics either on wood or a store bought canvas. I have struggles with using a thin application and getting the results I wanted. I have no problems when I stretch and gesso my canvses. But that is a long process that I would like to do without. More recently I have wanted to paint on wood again. I love wood panels but you do need more than gesso to get your acrylic paint to go on smoothly. It seems the smoother your surface the more your paints wants to just glide on with brush strokes and streaks. I want a more toothy surface that will grab the paint the way my canvases do.
So with this test I'm trying absorbent ground on a wood panel to see how the paint reacts.
What is Absorbent Ground?
Golden Absorbent Ground is a fluid acrylic medium that dries to a porous, paper-like surface for painting or drawing. Applied over gessoed canvas, it facilitates raw canvas-like staining, watercolor effects and acrylic washes. It dried to a toothy surface that mimics the texture of paper. It is applied over a gessoed surface like a canvas or printed wood to get the proper results.

Do you ever use black gesso? I discovered yesterday that there is another company that makes black absorbent ground. So I'm thrilled.

Susan, you are on the right track with the comparison of the white gesso vs. the white absorbent ground; you will definitely not be able to achieve the look you’re aiming at on the gesso surface. As for the black gesso, putting it OVER the white absorbent ground negates the effect you get from the absorbent ground because you’re just covering that surface with a layer of gesso. I don’t know of a black or clear version of an absorbent ground, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I do believe that if you mix the black gesso with the white absorbent ground, you will get a grey result, and the absorbent ground effect you like may be relatively compromised. And when you add layers to the paint sitting on top of the absorbent ground, I think you’ll be right back where you started when you apply acrylic paint directly to the gessoed surface. Just my 2 cents based on having seen other demos by Golden artist ambassadors who understand the chemistry behind it.

I’ve already discovered another brand has a black ground. The way I use acrylics it will work. If I was using a heavy application I would agree that it would eventually be a slick mess again.

I need to use a toothy substrate when doing encaustic art. Do you know if this works with hot encaustic applications? Is it an acrylic product?

Daniel Smith watercolor ground comes in a clear version. Maybe that would work over black? It is pricey though.

I just ordered a Daniel Smith watercolor ground in Mars Black that wasn't too expensive. I think it was a small jar. I want to test it before I invest in a bigger jar. Thanks for you comment. I should look for the clear one.

We’re you using store bought canvases? I love when I stretch my own and gesso as well then I don’t need the ground. I wish they sold raw canvas stretched.
