Ooh! Can't wait for the giraffe! There's a soft spot in my heart for giraffes because on the day my Dad took us to the zoo to see Katie, the kangaroo, we were sent away. Katie had hurt herself trying to jump over the fencing and she was resting. They sent us over to the giraffe who I think sense my unhappiness and licked my forehead which made me laugh. ❤

I did a lot of needlepoint in the 80s. I used the masking tape also. To control the twisting I would periodically hold the canvas upside down and let the threaded needle hang. That would spin all the twisting out. For crosstitching I would sew a 3 step zigzag around the edge. But sometimes I would just use masking tape instead.

Oh i love embroidery! It was the 1st needlecraft i was taught at 8 or 9. Grandma took me to the dime store and we got a hoop, floss (5 cents each) and a printed sampler. Such a big deal it was and lead to a lifetime of handcrafting of all kinds. 🙂

So nice that you had this time with Grandma. My gran was one of those always in the kitchen granny’s and we had no special time together. I didn’t even get to watch her cook. I hope to be a different kind on gran.

I did a great deal of needlepoint in the 1970s and always bound my canvas with masking tape. I also used it on fabric when I did counted cross stitch. I haven’t done either in years, but am thinking about bringing a cross stitch project with me on an upcoming cruise. It’s lightweight and travels well!

I love embroidery! It was my first love into the needle arts. And cross stitching. It is addictive! That's so cool with the tape because I've always used masking tape and I've been cross stitching and embroidering since the 80s. You guys give great info and tips. I really enjoy watching you both and you're both so funny and entertaining. Ps learning the Norwegian purl really stepped up my speed and improved my tension. Hugs! 💕

When we used to prepare a canvas, we were taught to do a mattress stitch all around in a light yellow wool or thinner yarn to stop it from fraying. And that I found tiresome, I was eager to use the beautiful colours in the project. Also we had to find the center of the canvas and we marked by using a thread over the length and over the width of the work. What a great idea to use tape. ❤

Sadly the time came when it was impossible to get the supplies and general interest waned, then disappeared. Now I think I'm too old to take it up again. My hands are so unsteady but if I were to be able to find the supplies, I might have another go! 😀 Your designs are absolutely color heavens. Oh! Needlepoint. I wish I could tell you how many needlepointed things I have in my house! My grandmother enlisted all her friends and they worked on making 14 dining room chair seats. The last one has “FINI” in a wreath of roses. Then - I have about 4 that an aunt made for me of cats (tassels long since fallen off). I have a picture of my kitty sound asleep in front of them all. I was taught at an early age how to do this - remember being horrified when my aunt gently suggested taking out messy stitches - and I currently have a 25-year-old project of a Peter Rabbit rug. All that’s left is the background. I even have my grandmother’s frame, a large standing structure for working on large pieces. Pocketbooks! Bell pulls! Ottomans! All kinds of things. And needlepoint lasts forever, very durable. When I look at them, I remember the maker; I loved all of them. We always use masking tape!

This is a great tutorial. The masking tape also helps prevent scratches from the rough edges. One thing my mother taught me was to start in the centre. She would mark the centre of her pattern and the centre of her canvas. However if you very accurately measure out your canvas, starting at the edge, as you have proven, also works. Thank you for sharing your beautiful designs as well as your experiences such as your photo book. Best wishes from Edmonton Alberta Canada where we looooove to craft.

I can't believe that you made this video I absolutely needed. I'm so happy (I couldn't listen to it before today). I bought the Mandrill pillow pattern many days ago but the yarn, canvas ad wooden frame just this week. I'm giving myself 2 years to do it because I have to follow the pattern and count the number of stitches by color and there are so many colors! I find it easy to make half-cross stitches but not so sure about not having the colors printed on the canvas. But anyway, I am in love with that pattern and the colors. If it's not too long to do, I may buy the panda pattern. We will see. Thank you.

Arne we were always taught to go down all the way and then come up all the way. By going in and out again and then pulling through it drags the wool and it can make the twist and thinning out with twist worse. As always... just a tip from my Grandmother. There are lots of different opinions Im sure. I will always be grateful for your showing me how to knit correctly (I was purposefully searching for a comfortable continental knitting technique). So this is not a criticism but just sharing. Best wishes.

I watched Arne twirl the needle to untwist the yarn. He never said it and probably does it without thinking. Another way to deal with the problem is to just drop the needle and let it dangle and untwist itself. With the wool yarn the needle does not come unthreaded.

I use my sewing machine and sew a zig zag stitch all around the cut edges. Quick, easy , stays soft and flexible.

that canvas works great for cross stitch as well...cross stitch is similar to embroidary, you use the same floss thread but you make X's across the canvas....once you fill in the picture it looks like pixels similar to the TV

I have used masking tape but find that it leaves a residue and sometimes hard to get off if I'm working a long time on a project. I've even had to cut the masking tape off sometimes. Now I use painters tape, with no residue or having to cut it off. Works on any type of canvas or material. I do tapestry, cross stitch, petit-point and cloth embroidery and it works on all. Even my quilting projects.

I'm glad to see you two doing charted needlepoint! I got priced out when it seemed that all one could find were painted designs, and not only that I found it difficult to place colors when they were already painted on the canvas, Once I covered up, say, a medium green mark on the canvas I couldn't tell whether the next stitch was the same medium green or a slightly lighter/yellower/etc. shade. So now I do counted cross stitch. But I love your new designs and I think they would work well in cross stitch also. I prefer painter's tape to ordinary household masking tape; but safer than either is machine-stitching close to the edge (zigzag or serger) or working blanket stitch around the edges. And I always leave a minimum margin of 2-3 inches ( 5 to 7 or 8 cm) on all sides. Not to throw shade at either of you or Judy Chicago, but...yikes.

Don't hate on me because I love Arne and Carlos. But is this considered embroidery? I would have called it tapestry or needlepoint. I was always taught embroidery was different kinds of stitches like chain stitches and French knots etc. Happy to be put straight.

Agree - I call it needlepoint, not embroidery. Then there’s something called crewel - which IS, I think, embroidery.

@@wnygrl585 correct. And crewel is embroidery (think of samplers) whereas needlepoint isn’t, or at least I wouldn’t call it that.
