How to prep for CS? Do I need Maths? How to create a portfolio? Is AI going to take my job? | Q&A 💭
Hey friends, I'm back with another video, this time answering all your questions about computer science and tech!
I have some questions for you too!
Q1: If you're currently working in tech, how much Maths do you use?
Q2: What resources do you use to stay up-to-date with the latest tech?
Hope it was helpful and don't forget to like, comment, share, and subscribe 😊

Awesome video! Definitely got some inspirations out of it and especially the resources you share are new to me, will check them out! I will also add that C# is popular for backend development. If you are into Gaming Development, C++ is also popular. Maths and physics will also be useful for Gaming Dev as you might need to calculate some objects path or collision physics too. Look forward to the next video!

Hi Magdeline - great video! I saw you were wondering for those in tech about "whether we use maths at work?" I am currently doing an ML internship and we do use a fair bit of Linear Algebra. University classes in Linear Algebra are definitely helpful, however, I have personally found I learn this best on the job. There seem to be lots of open source libraries and online tutorials for learning the math needed for these domains.

Oooh thanks for sharing Riley! Yea I guess ML would definitely require Maths for the type of work you do. What is your tech stack?
really amazing video🤩🤩, really helpful, not only for those studying computer science, but also for those who are just interested in what computer science professionals do. Thank you for sharing all this valuable information on how to get started on building a career. ❤️❤️

Hi Magdeline, greetings from Malaysia, as an intern currently working at an AI startup, usually a solid understanding in mathematical concepts would help in learning concepts like image detection/ AI model training etc.

Hello fellow Malaysian! Ooh thanks for sharing! Yea from the comments, it sounds like those more AI / ML / gaming / backend related roles use more Maths :D

A lot of people say the content you learn in university is out of date when you start your career, would be really cool to hear which parts of university have contributed the most to your everyday at your current job

I learnt theoretical concepts in CS such as databases and algorithms, big O, proofs and theorems, and of course, how to actually code and think like a programmer. While I don't use most of these concepts directly in the work that I do now, they have definitely helped to give me a strong foundation. For example, even though I had to learn a lot of new technologies quickly, having this foundation helped me to make sense of it all a lot better eg understanding concepts like inheritance, DRY etc. So personally, I wouldn't say the content is out of date once you start your career, but rather it's just that what you do when you start your career is a lot more practical than uni (in my experience). One aspect of a degree that I can think of that might get outdated though is potentially using specific software that eventually end up getting discontinued.
I haven't watched it before, but I found it in the video
I'm about to head to a CS degree in university next year but I really want to do something hands on where I can work on projects whether that be applications or game development (my real passion!) What course would you recommend I take because it seems like there are so MANY technology courses that sound the same but they don't actually tell us what each one will be like
@MagdelineHuang

Hello! Yea it can feel very overwhelming sometimes! Does your uni website list the concepts that will be covered in the course? If not, see if you can find an email address for the CS department and ask them your questions. All the best!

Hi, Thanks for your lovely and informational video. Currently, I have a master's degree in photography, but I thought what I had learned was too theoretical, and I wanted to change my major. Do you think it is possible to do? Could you give me some advice? Thank you!

Hi, I graduated one month ago and started my first job. Do you or anyone else have any tips on the transition from college to work life? Are there some things you wish you knew when you got into it? And what do you do with all this free time after work? Best regards

Oooh congrats! Honestly, just take it easy haha. I chilled a lot, hung out with friends and fam, got really into fitness etc. I also tried to discover myself more and what works best for me. Eg I tried a whole bunch of different systems to help me manage my time like different sleep schedules, different pre- and post- work routines etc. So yea I'd say just listen to your body and do what works for you! I may do a vlog to share what I usually get up to outside of work hehe

Good Day Magdeline, thanks for the video. Please am about graduating from university early next year 2024, am from Nigeria. Am studying Physics and Astronomy, but I would love to study computer science abroad as an undergraduate, but am 23yrs now. What do you think i should do, should go on or what? Why am asking, is because my coursemates are telling me that i don't have age on my side any longer to go for another undergraduate program. I would love to study computer science. Please what do you think i should do?
@MagdelineHuang

Hi! If you really want to study Computer Science, then I'd say go for it! Don't worry about age. As the saying goes, "The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now." Instead of going for an undergraduate CS program however, you could check if your university allows you to study a postgraduate CS program because of your relevant background in Physics. Hope this helps and good luck!
Hey, I want to enter computer science, but I'm afraid that artificial intelligence will take my place. Do you think I should enter computer science or see another field?

@@MagdelineHuang I see. Seems like I’m better off with a MacBook rather than the iPad. One last thing pls, I’m planning to get the m2 MacBook Air 15 and dk if I should upgrade the ram from 8 to 16gb or upgrade the storage from 256 to 512 gb because my budget is limited:( If I could pick only one, which one should I upgrade from the two for most use cases
