You’re exactly right Joe. I’m a 65 yr old beginner and I’m fascinated with the process of learning in its self. When I think learning a new chord, riff or song is out of my reach it always amazes me when and how it finally clicks. Sometimes it’s a matter of just going to bed and the next morning it’s there. lol.
Well, Joe, I've been following your advice since I started with your Patreon several years ago. I've made the journey from "that guy" who tries to look at both hands at the same time to a novice finger-picker. Now, I've got a book of about 15 songs I can get all the way through and a second group of maybe 20 songs waiting to add. I struggled to learn even one song at first, but every step of the way I've heard your voice telling me to be patient, keep working and enjoy the trip. I've gone from focusing on blues to adding in folk music I've been listening to since the 60s and recent stuff as well. So, instead of hearing some great song and saying "you can never play that" I just ask myself if I like it well enough to learn it, then start in on it. This is particularly gratifying for the finger-picking songs which I didn't expect to ever be able to do. I'm not afraid of anything now - if I like hearing it, I'm willing to try it on. All it takes is time and willingness to stick with a project. Thanks Joe!

Hey David, thanks so much for posting. Reading things like this makes what I do so rewarding. To feel like I’m helping folks realise that they are capable of doing all kinds of things they may never have dreamt, is more than I could hope for. You in turn have helped me do what I love to do, which is help people like yourself and for that I am very grateful to you.

Great talk, Joe. I started playing again after a 30-year plus layoff. That 4 letter word WORK always got in the way. I now find myself with time and always loved music and playing the guitar. So, i dusted off the rust and retaught all the things i had learned when i was a teen (wished we had KZread back then)... anyway, i have been watching and learning from you along with some private instructions by where i live. In 4 months, i have progressed rapidly from having you as a resource. Thank you, Joe!!

Sorry Mark just realised you’re already part of my Patreon 🙏
Really good lesson Joe - common sense approach which not only offers reassuring pointers to improvement, it deals with the things we have all gone through - and probably continue to go through. As you say, with time and application a lot of these problems are solved - chords easier, transitions better, picking becomes automatic. And then just when you think you've got it cracked you try a new, more difficult song😀 and it starts all over again! (But you find you cope better and quicker than you did last time!) Recommend watching as a good way to spend 15 minutes of your valuable practise time. 👍
