    Not only watching for the animation but learning the audio cues is important as well. People actually react faster to sound rather than sight, believe it or not. Learning audio cues helps against moves that look similar but have different properties.

    Definitely audio queues are easier to react to than visual I 100% agree here

    When a certain character beats my ass online for multiple matches, I add the player, befriend them, and ask them for games for the next few weeks or months until I'm able to whoop them at least 50% of the time

    Wow as an intermediate player I've always found practice overwhelming, this has really simplified it. As always thank you for laying down the bridge to help people like me start their journey of progress across the vast sea that is Tekken.

  • @PeterYMao

    Hey Ben, I'm happy to lay down the bridge but it's up to the player to take the steps to cross it. Just make sure to remember that on that journey it's progress, not perfection. As long as you make the attempt to punish, regardless of whether you get the timing or not. You'll find that once you get it nailed down you need to punish this "X,Y or Z" move with your "A,B, or C" move it's just a matter of timing and that's easier than remember to use a particular move. Best of luck bud!

    Something that helped me was realizing that a lot of moves in Tekken often follow certain "rules" that can be applied to multiple characters even if you don't have or can't remember the frame data. Hopkicks are jab punishable, df-1s are safe while df-2s usually aren't, mid launchers that are safe are often a little "slower" and/or steppable so they're not broken, that kind of stuff. The one problem with the record function is that you can't lab a sequence or scenario if you can't do it yourself, like someone wavedashing toward me after a knockdown, Dragonav taking advantage of plus frames after his running 2 that I can never sidestep in an actual match, or half the shit Hwoarang does that I can never remember how to play against for some reason. It's also weird that the dummy will sometimes do moves that you didn't record and you can't make it do otg throws even if you're on the ground. Also, you obviously can't lab dlc characters unless you buy said characters.

    I like to learn opponent character's strings while playing against it. Every time they throw a string i memorize how it looks like when it starts so it can help early in the animation and it's pretty fast to learn the different endings to strings and how to punish them. In short while playing i'm learning the opposing character as if i would play/practise with that character.

That was "my practice" up until this point (hit Seiryu like 2-3 days ago) I was actually looking for someone maybe tutorials "anti-strats" which moves i can sidestep/duck punish and now I've found this list and I can finally get some genuine knowledge and efficient training in practice mode. Thank you and the guys who created the lists. Thank you so so much.

    Thank you so much for this! It is exactly what I needed. I just reached Genbu for the first time with Bryan. However what costs me most of the time is ineffective block punishment. I block consistently even quick lows, but I just punish with 1+4 or not at all :P. However because I am bored to lab and do not know how to find a character's most common moves I have just relied on match experience. Now I can start labbing effectively! I will also start supporting your work now that I am getting a proper job :)

    Thank you for this video. It gave me a lot of insight. I was always doing the inefficient method you mentioned in the beginning of the video. Labbing every single move. Why? I wanted to be prepared for EVERYTHING they could throw at me. After playing more and more online matches though, I have noticed that a majority of players barely use some of their characters' moves because they are simply too impractical or too situational.

    I'm not sure on that. You would have to message applay to get get the full information on if it was up to date. Just knowing is part of the game, practice is another.

    My #1 for players who are playing for the long term is to practise to play with every single character on a basic level so you know all top moves by heart and are aware of their strategies. It's really fun and you might find your favorite new character/s that way. I started that early this year and i have so far played till 200 wins online with Kunimitsu, Ganryu, Zafina, Julia, Marduk and Anna. I main Kazumi, Heihachi and Yoshimitsu and when i see the bonus characters i have practised basics with i can beat them noticeably easier than others i haven't. Also this way i can recall their moves better because i have them in my muscle memory. And the game is also more interesting because you can enjoy 100% of the game and not just 4% with playing with just two characters.

    It's used to varying the frequency of how often that attack shows up. If you have a move that is set to 10 and another move that's set to 1 the move at 10 will show up more frequently, than the move set at 1.

    Hey peter I’m a intermediate to advanced tekken player whenever I practice a character I use for the first time by going through their move list and sample combos to see if I can go on from there and make up my own combos

  • @PeterYMao

    I personally watch some games of pros playing a character to see what moves are usually used, what the combos look like from a pros perspective, and then look up some combo videos online. From there I decide if I want to try the character out. But I suppose everyone has a different take on it.

    This is a very hard question to answer, but my suggestion is work on whiff punishing. Players tend to whiff a lot in the lower ranks and from what it sounds like you are probably orange ranks or below. Another thing to work on is positioning. If you start getting close to a wall you need to start repositioning away

    Hi, I have been playing Tekken since Tekken 3 on arcades. Recently I downloaded Tekken 7 on pc. During the game when I press the right punch button nothing happens. When I'm Pressing the Right Kick button my character automatically grapples the opponent. The left punch and Left kick are working fine. I have turned off the basic combo option. What more should I do to get back to the basic RP RK LP LK setup? It is so annoying. Please help?

    You are watching a video that’s labeled 204. I built a whole series around understanding how to learn Tekken. It’s in my playlist. Additionally Tekken notation is just this way to prevent confusion. If you play PC how would I know which keys you should press? If you play XBox the X button is different than PlayStation X button. Because of this, we use notations in Tekken. There are a lot of notations, but other KZread content creators have gone ahead and made resources to help you understand what they mean. Just KZread Tekken button notation

  • @PeterYMao

    @PeterYMao

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's a great asset for sure. Having the ability to rewatch your games is definitely something I always advocate players to do. When you rewatch your matches you are able find things you did correctly (block punish, whiff punish, spacing etc..) and continue to do them. When you find things you didn't know like block punishing certain attacks you're able to learn from them. I suggest learning the moves of character based on their top 15 moves first, and then if you have time learn more. Setting a schedule really helps with practicing. It's like going to the gym, putting in 30min to 45min a day isn't bad. :) Hope that helps you out bud.

    I will add something that became very useful for me in matches I didnt lab: Be aware and get used to see the recovery animation You can use this video to notice the differences between -10 and -15 for example Also hopkicks are usually -12/-13, WGF are -10, Mishimas 1,1,2 are -17 and most strings that endup in a mid/low are for the most part -(pay attention to the recovery, some are plus)

  • @PeterYMao

    @PeterYMao

    3 жыл бұрын

    The animation for recoveries are very different and sometimes a case by case basis. Example of a very minus move that doesn't have very good recovery animation, but are launch punishable are moves like Asuka's f+2, and Feng's b+1+2 come to mind. There's very little stun animation. But as a rule, you can look for the recovery animations.

    Don't just "memorize" you need to practice it. It's like playing a music instrument, it takes time and practice, not just memorizing. Memorizing notes, knowing what notes to play is not enough because you will be too slow initially. Practicing it will make things faster to the point where you won't even have to think about it later on.
