How to Port a Power Steering Box for Hydraulic Ram Assist

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Great way to double the steering power. This is for all Saginaw steering boxes commonly found in Wrangles, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee 98 and earlier and Dodge Durango.

There's another thing how about the frame where you bolt the steering box to. Many times on the Chevrolet the frame will crack around the steering box this would cause a lot of movement in steering wheel.

So what is under that passage plug? Could a person remove that plug, open up the hole and tap it vs cross drilling the thinner wall? I have seen the replacement end caps that have a port in them, which port is that cap supplying vs your method of drill and tap? BTW not the biggest fan of the ported caps, just seems vulnerable!

What would the on road characteristics be like with a hydro assist upgrade. My cherokee is my daily driver. Cherokee steering has always felt heavy when I drive my other rigs. Curious how this would make it feel during normal driving. Hoping it would help it feel more refined and modern. If that makes sense. Appreciate the videos man.

At 1st you're going to swear that the steering is loose and what it is it's become a more sensitive, it takes less effort so you have a tendency to oversteer at 1st until you get used to it because the steering wheel feels extremely light.

  • @VT5874

@@martinbuilt Thank you for the response! -Being for sensitive is what im looking for. As far as road characteristics/handling, is there any worth mentioning? Do you think it would accomplish what im looking for, or do you think it makes the steering feel “wonky”? -I am really hoping it just makes it feel a little softer/easier to steer, more like my tacoma. -Do you happen to have any suggestions or ideas that would accomplish this, if a hydro assist is a step in the wrong direction? Again, very much appreciated.

  • @martinbuilt

I would imagine it is possible that the steering boxes were bad but unlikely. I would have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth while you're observing the steering shaft to the steering gear box to make sure there's no movement there making sure that that connection is solid) then also check your pitman arm and then your tie rod ends. Watch the movement at the steering gear box between the input and output shafts.
