Great stuff learnt a lot , I am polishing an old stainless steel and brass fire extinguisher and it’s been a bit of a pain in the but to get it right after watching this can’t wait to give it a go . I have learned a lot from your videos and thank you for that. I saw you did a Prevost bus there was a shot clip of it leavings your shop. I just did the wheel on my bus and now the stainless dose not look as shiny as I would like. Any recommendations on polishing the sides of a bus what is the best things to use. It is pretty shiny but the wheels are now shinier. Thanks for all the great information.

I could see that the sanded side had less nicks, specks etc... Sure it takes longer but I grew up painting custom vehicles so I did a lot of sanding and of course after you painted that beauty it needed to be polished so I had to learn it right or you were fired and or had to repaint it as in my case as my dad was the owner lol.

That is the name of the game. The smoother the start the better the finish in almost everything in life. But everyone has different expectations for the final finish. For some the unsanded is good enough.

You can use whatever for buffs. I prefer buffs made to hold up to the heat of stainless. But that is a preference on my part. goshineon.com has a stainless kit. I also show which buffs and compounds in this video and in my how to sand and polish stainless video. Hope this helps

What power tool would you recommend for an average joe diyer who just polishes his motorcycle stainless exhaust. It originally had a mirror finish but have lost its shine due to corrision and road grime. Would a 3500 variable speed polisher due the job to bring back some of its mirror finish?

Hello Evan just recently Subscribed to your channel, love you're videos. I have commercial 6ft stainless steel, propane griddle. What Makita model would be perfect to remove deep & light scratches, Makita 9227c or Makita 6,000 rpm? Made the error of hand wet sanding the griddle with 400 grit. When't to Lowes and bought a Craftsman CMEE145, 6", 6,800 OPM, variable speed. Have not open it, cause, I stumbled upon your videos. Please guide me towards the correct product for the job. If starting from a mill scaled stainless finish what steps would you start with to be most efficient and to cut down consumable costs. I work in a custom stainless shop. And it seems like the techniques we try are always changing because no one can seem to understand it. Lol. TIA great video,

Our steps vary but are usually around.. If starting from mill finish. -Rip flat with 120 grit on 5 inch grinder - sand with 220 until previous finish starts disappearing. - Again with 400.. Repeat process to 6-8-1000- 1200 grit - begin adding polishing compound and using a cotton buffer wheel. -** problems**No matter what, we can always see one of the steps left over in the final finish weather it be a fine or deep scratch We are looking for a set way start to finish to accomplish a standard mirror finish. Something the same every time.

Great tip! Yes talcum does work but I personally prefer whitening powder. It is less abrasive than talcum.

Not likely on stainless steel. Stainless is super hard and liquids don't do much. Now with that said do know a few polishers that only polish stainless by hand but it takes a lot of time and with specialty abrasives and tons of time. LOL

I'm sorry but I do not do trim. I am the wrong guy to answer that question as trim is very unique to polish and a completely different skill set. I recommend looking up Kevin Marshall on instagram or facebook. He is one of the best I know in doing trim. He is always willing to help others too.

im doing some stainless exhaust pipes.cant change direction,the pipes are too small so i have to hand sand after every grit to smooth things out. pain in the ass.

Agreed. They are an absolute pain. I switch up direction on exhaust pipes though. It isn't easy but is achievable.

Yes you can! But I don't recommend mixing them on the multiple surfaces. Once a buff is a stainless polishing buff it is always a stainless buff. Can't really get the buffing compound out of the buff. Hope this makes sense.

Goshineon.Com but stacks usually aren’t stainless. They are usually chrome. Chrome is hand polish only.

I never cross contaminate my cut or color buffs. I always use different buffs with different compounds.

Have any tips how to smooth/sand a big 316 SS hex nut by hand? I have a pair of 1-5/8” thread hex nuts (700gram each) I wanna make nice and shiny or brushed at the least. They are like typical nuts… lots of small dings/pits and imperfections from rolling around in storage, etc. …basically like a pseudo hammered finish. I think the first step is to smooth/flatten it, correct? I tried 60grit by hand… hardly did anything. Then I tried a Makita “finishing sander” (vibrating kind)… didn’t do anything neither. Unfortunately, I don’t have any other rotary polishers nor grinders nor belt/disc sanders. Tried a bastard file… this was by far the best yet. But still took 10-20mins per side (6 sided nut). I have some old sharpening wet stones I might try next… perhaps for finishing only, since it’s 300/1000 grit.

The way I show in this video is the only way I personally know how. I couldn't accomplish this by hand. I know a few that can but I have never seen it done. Sorry I can't be more help on the subject.

@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing No prob! I got it done with a bastard file (main step to flatten/smooth out) > 300/1000 whetstone > 1000 wet sand > 1500 wet sand > polish. Not perfect; but it's good enough for me. Took countless hours, a couple days and very sore forearms, lol.

I'm not a user of mother's products so I am not a good expert on if it works or not. I personally don't use their stuff since I can't get the results I want but that doesn't mean their stuff doesn't work. Just means it doesn't work for me.

Does stainless require same polishing temp outdoors as aluminium. It's about 57 degrees here

Yes. Stainless needs to get hot to shine. If it doesn't get hot it won't want to give up the shine.

And what type of grinders are you using for rpms does it matter between 6000 or a 3500 variable speed??

It doesn't matter. It is a personal preference thing. I use 6,000 rpm for cut and color but I use the variable for high lustre finish stuff.

To properly polish ones rooster I highly recommend doing it by hand. Far less headaches and a far more gentle approach. LOL I hope this helps.

I assume that will need to build up some heat just like when doing stainless for best results? Lastly, any advice on how to protect the rooster? Nothing worse then having a dull rooster laying around

@@ericmerchant3646 I would recommend many different products from goshineon.com/shop. As you know I'm not a fan of microfiber on metal but a cotton sock sounds perfect. I personally prefer a softer pressure as not to scratch the rooster. I would treat it like aluminum to be honest. A little heat but not too much heat. Treating it like stainless might be too hot and cause burning. And lastly a good waxing from time to time should help keep the rooster from getting too dull.

@@EvanStegerMetalPolishing Smith and Wesson 629 is a .44 magnum revolver. S&W usually sells them in a matte finish. High polish isn't that common any more for that model, and some do-it-yourself'rs like to try to polish them up.

Due to changes in the market the last few years, the color of the color buff has changed since this vide was posted. So for stainless it is red buff black bar and green buff with yellow.
