The videos should help anyone whether working on a cafe racer build or a full-on original restoration. I'm definitely not an expert so please refer to your manuals for proper disassembly and assembly instructions. Please leave comments if you have any questions. I'll be happy to help answer questions if I can confidently provide solutions. Again, I'm not a professional. This is my 2nd Honda motorcycle restoration and I'm learning every single day. I'd love to hear your tips if you have better ways to do things. I hope you find the series useful and entertaining. I strive to show as much detail as possible so that the videos can be used as not only a how-to resource but also a reference for the placement and original set up of parts and systems.
If you don't have one already please get a manual for your specific project. There are many available online for download for free. Common Motor Collective, from which I source many of my replacement parts, has a fantastic resource on their website: bit.ly/CBManuals You can also join groups on Facebook and get involved in the community.

on my 70 cb350 I used this method only used a soft brass wire wheel for initial cleaning...it got the little crevices really well........ then used the white buffing compound for polishing.......metal polish to finish did the trick....literally 100's of hours on every piece of my bike

Very timely report. I'm up to polishing my alum forks now. This reminded me that I actually have a polishing kit with wheels and compound that I used on a long ago project. My forks are on the bike so I'm going to use my drill motor not a bench grinder. The drill may not have as high rpms(?) But it's what I've got. I've done this before so i know it works. Wont be able to reach all spots, of course. Your tips are right on the money: don't force the piece in toward the wheel, clean the wheel and use sufficent compound. AND wear a mask. I didnt the first time and was blowing black crap out of my nose for days. Shine on brightly.

I bought a polisher at a swap meet new for $100. It’s the same deal but the shafts are longer and you have a lot more ability to move the part flatly across the wheels. I never wipe the black residue off until I run the part across the soft wheel first without adding any white rouge. Be careful that thing will wreck your day much faster than it makes it. You will launch those pieces if not fully concentrating on it. Don’t think about fried chicken for dinner or anything else for that matter.

@@KeepOnWrenching if you get the right machine it’s another game changer. I restored two old cars with mine both had a ton of stainless trim. I started with a bench grinder too but it limits you on what you can do. Also, try using your soft wheel to clean off the black residue. Another time saver you will love the results.

Get a good degreaser to get as much as you can. Otherwise it’s just going be a pain while polishing. I think Dawn does a pretty good job. You could pressure wash it to if the engine is out. That helps a ton.

One is a really cheap yet functional one from Amazon. I think it was like 45 bucks. No wheels. Easy to add. The other came with my polisher and is heavier with wheels. I don’t have them bolted down as I like being able to move things around. I had a foam mat and keep a foot on it.

A correct restoration would not be to polish the fork legs to that high of a gloss. Thats not factory. With that said do you know how to do it properly or are you just a beginner? Anyone can polish but not correctly for a correct restoration. Just curious bacause I get tired of watching KZreadrs trying to teach something they dont actually know how to do themselves.

I’m having fun showing processes that I’ve learned along the way in restoring a few motorcycles. Not a pro but a guy who likes to learn and grow. I like the shine. It’ll fade over time without constant maintenance or clear coat but I don’t mind putting the time in to maintain things. I simply wanted to show a simple process to shine some aluminum. I hope you enjoyed the video.
