You can actually get more grass blocks! The wandering trader can sell rooted dirt which you can right-click with a shovel into a dirt path, which you can then mine back into dirt. This allows you to spread more grass and therefore get many more passive mobs.

Hey all, future me back to say thanks for the recent blow-up and update this video with some new facts. - 1.18 introduced the moss block which basically overhauls this video. It costs 1 emerald to buy two of these, and if you bonemeal the moss, it can create trees (no saplings required). Very big route-change that pushes things slightly towards human-completable. - Around 12:15 I get confused as to why podzol isn't increasing the passive mob spawn rate. Turns out podzol can't spawn passive mobs like grass can. After looking at the games code, I found that podzol is only able to spawn in foxes (happy little coincidence???). Also this issue can be resolved through the next point: - A lot of people have commented that I can make more grass from the podzol by tilling or path-ing it then letting the grass spread. This is something I was aware of but didn't make super clear in the video. I implied it at around 19:15 but I should've used it in my comparison at 12:15 - Finally, a really good comment that came in early was that I could get gold by killing drowned. This was absolutely true until 1.17 where drowned started to drop copper instead of gold. I also found that there was no overlap between when moss blocks became tradable (21w13a) and when the drowned drop table was changed (21w05a). This means you can't have both drowned dropping gold and traders selling moss unless you're willing to downgrade (which is fair game IMO but just saying) Also final note, this video had 1500 views a month ago lmao (350k now). Thanks for all the support and please do check out the follow-up series where I do the bedrock thing :>

You could easily make this into an ultra-hardcore mod pack by tweaking some of the big issues with this challenge, such as increasing the distance you can fall before a hostile mob despawns, reduce player knockback, increase the chances of foxes spawning with emeralds, increase the chances of wandering traders and their useful trades, etc. It would still be absolute agony to play but it’s be great for some masochist KZreadr to suffer through for our entertainment.

Yup! This is the best way to increase the passive mob spawn rate. He seemed to miss this. Unfortunately It would take Loads of hours, as the 17 minutes per passive mob is with loads of blocks. This implies you've killed tons of sheep for wool already, his rate of passive mobs with no blocks is 23 hours per mob. So it would take probably months of in game time to build up to a spawn rate of that, say you get like 3-4 wool from a sheep after say 3 passive spawns(as you may not get a sheep) attempts so 3 days, this ups your rate, then it takes another 2 days to get another sheep, maybe 1 more day for a new sheep. then things MAY pick up a bit. So after a few weeks you may be at that 17 minutes per passive mob. at this rate it still would take about a week to get a single emerald, Probably would want to go podzol then after you get 3 to have more spawning on grass as well as use the dirt from podzol to spread grass to a new biome, which opens up the doors to all the biome specific mob drops then. So my guess is that to reach this point would probably take a few months of in game time, which is crazy but i have games with 2000+ hours in, so to suggest putting in a few months of play is plausible.

If you did get any lava, it would be functionally infinite because you would be able to get a dripstone spike from the trader and make that lava generator setup with the lava and a cauldron. Buckets would probably also not be a problem at that point all things considered. Your progression would also be a little bit faster, because the second you get any water having a furnace enables you to smelt down armor from zombies with a blast furnace and get gold and iron nuggets. Of course you would need wood before this became useful, though.

2:24 i tried this out, and i think i got a method that, with some practice, could be reliable enough so that in a hypothetical human attempt of this challenge you wouldn't have to risk spawning in a creeper or relying on rng to get a bow and arrows to get blocks. Basically this method is very similar to what you tried here with a few modifications. The first thing i found is that it is essential to release sprint before you hit, because you deal much more knockback with sprint. Second: it is much easier to move the sheep to the corner of the block without shaders, because you can rely on the circular entity shadow to judge how you need to move the sheep(or if you should at all). Third: it helps to do a pretty big circle jump instead of risking it by jumping close to the sheep, you're more likely to push it off accidentally if you do that. I also noticed that, at least for me, it is much more reliable to let yourself fall for quite a bit before doing a hit from below, this in theory allows you to position yourself more accurately relative to the block and the sheep and maybe even subconsciously judge whether you should punch or not. Last tip is to, of course, count the punches, do five and for the sixth just do one while remaining on the block, having the wool fall into the void is not something you would want i think. First big issue is that it is rather easy to accidentally punch the sheep at an undesirable angle and instead of punching the sheep to the opposite corner it will end up closer to one of the sides of the block, this, in a lot of situations, makes it pretty much impossible to move it to a corner when you want to go for the next hit, instead you're more likely to end up pushing it off. The two solutions are to either wait and then reposition it when it starts moving or to risk it and try to get a hit in anyway, this has worked for me a couple times, but again, big risk. Second issue is that this all kinda takes a while and there's a good chance that at some point during this the sheep will just randomly decide to end your run and eat grass. Those are the two issues i noticed so far in my tests, i've yet to(and to be honest probably won't) attempt this as part a real run, so i might be missing something that could make this not viable, like for example the sheep despawning when you fall or something silly like that, but i have gotten 6 consecutive hits before and found this to be more or less reliable as long as you know what you're doing.

At one point I had a similar idea except the starting point was a blank superflat world (no decorations, no villages, etc). i ended up discovering the same things you did here, that you can get emeralds from foxes (thus, make biome taiga), to trade to a wandering trader for essential items, get iron from zombies, gold from zombie piglins when lightning strikes pigs, etc. i never put the pieces together for converting zombie villagers via a witch, though. that was clever. its unfortunate that you cant actually go to the nether or the end, though. you can make this a possible almost 1 block survival map where you can beat the entire game by having a chest with end portal frames and a lava bucket. then, with the most-recent changes, you can infinitely duplicate lava with dripstone, which is now a possible trade from Wandering Traders, so you can make nether portals. depending on what you do with the Nether for the survival challenge, you _should_ be able to beat the game from there. place the portal frames down somewhere, make your eyes, and you can go to The End.

As someone who has done this research as well, here's a few additions: - If you play multiplayer, you can kill sheep with your fists, if the other player punches them back onto the platform. - Spiders drop string, which you can also use to craft wool blocks. This is probably faster than waiting for sheep, if you can kill them reliably. - I actually played on a vanilla skyblock server where we had to go the fox route. It took us about a month to get the emeralds for podzol. Since we also had access to the nether though, we could get the remaining emeralds much faster (since we had basically Infinite dirt). - starting in the nether is probably the better option, if you can somehow figure out a way to kill mobs at the beginning (e. g. in multiplayer) Very well made video though! I didn't think of using bows for one-shotting sheep, that's smart. Also snow is a great idea. I totally want to try that at some point, maybe with scripts and the option to speed up the game. I would love to chat with you about this stuff sometime :)

Insane work man, this is the most interesting and mindblowing Minecraft video i have seen so far. I really appreciate these mathematical explainations, I love the way you use probabilities and all the infinite complexity of minecraft to theorically prove this is actually possible. This is stunning. I am a french math teacher and I wish I could use this video in one of my lessons to explain how to multiply fractions and percentages for exemple ^^ This video is giving me a lot of inspiration thank you :D

No, since the mobs are killed instantly by commands the mobcap is at 0 the next time the game attempts to spawn passive mobs. Podsol is just not a block passive mobs can spawn on.

1.18 has made one part of this challenge much easier. Foxes can now spawn on snow blocks, as can rabbits and wolves. Some napkin calculation tell me that a large enough platform of snow will spawn on average 3.6 foxes every 20 seconds. That's a bit faster than one every 75 minutes.

This is actually extremely well made I would like to see similar videos. One idea is seeing the limits of the rarest possible occurance in a single gametick on a single block or chunk. My idea would be a mob spawning while getting struck by lightning. Or passive mob behavior like chiken egg drops or sheep eating grass.the idea and limits are up to you though.

It would probably be the rarest mob spawning while getting hit by lightning or something similar. If you want the rarest occurance possible that would probably be quantum teleportation causing the game to glitch and summon a completely new mob.
