How to play "The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31" - Board Game Cavern

•••CORRECTIONS:
-If a player draws a Supply card which says "Sabotage" they reveal it immediately. They do not take it into their hand. If they are dealt one at the beginning of the game, they trade it out for another card.
-When the Captain discards the Supply cards, he lays them face down. Not face up, as seen in this video. Sorry for the confusion.
Brooks (or is it?) shows you how to set up and play this creep-tacularly fun social deduction game based on one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
An alien life form has infiltrated a bleak and desolate Antarctic research station assimilating other organisms and then imitating them. In the hidden identity game "The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31, you will relive John Carpenter sci-fi cult classic in a race to discover who among the team has been infected by this heinous life form.

    Being a mega fan of the film I made the purchase last night at my local game shop. This is my first actual purchase of a board game in quite some time...like forever. I did a quick run (just me) when I made it home to get a feel for it and really look forward to getting a group of friends together to play. You do a good job covering the basics here! There are obviously a few little "things" to be added but this is a great tutorial of the overall play and how easy it is to jump right in.

    I'm with you, Kevan! One of my favorite movies. In fact, watched it last night in preparation for our very first playthrough tomorrow (8 players!). I did leave out the flamethrower, molotov, and Final Captain vote, but I figure the rulebook will explain those things better than I. Let me know what you think of the game after playing. :)

    Board Game Cavern - I have had a couple groups of 5 play and we all had a blast as well. We are trying to work out a couple 8 player games now as all the player's we're excited to have another go. Seems incredibly difficult for the humans with 5 people, did any of your larger games result in the humans escaping?

    Do th rules say the discards should be upside down? I havent played just wondering. That way, if the leader was the thing, he could discard something important to the mission while anonymously helping it fail. If you need a gun, and the captain discards the gun, itd be super obvious that hes the thing. Is that intended so the captain isnt an over the top saboteur?

    Question. When sending out someone to put out a fire, who expends the fire extinguisher card? The captain? Cause I don’t know anyone else’s cards... 2. One mission rolls can you freeze dice like you can on battle rolls?

  • @BoardGameCavern

    @BoardGameCavern

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching, Werewolvians. 1) You are correct: the Captain wouldn't know who has a fire extinguisher, so he/she would ask the group if someone had one. Someone says they do, Cap sends them in. From the rule book: "In order to Investigate a Room with Smoke or Fire, a member of the selected Team must first discard a Fire Extinguisher Supply card, effectively ‘unlocking’ the Room. Doing so will also clear the Room of Smoke or Fire (removing the token), allowing the Investigation to continue as normal. The Captain may choose to ignore the Smoke or Fire and Investigate a different room, but in turn risk Room Destruction. Additionally, if Smoke or Fire is present in two or more Rooms, or in a Room without a Room chip (one that has already been Investigated), the Captain may send an individual player to clear the Smoke or Fire (by discarding a Fire Extinguisher to remove the token) in addition to assembling a Team for the Mission Log Investigation." 2) I'm not sure what you mean by "mission roles." On missions, the "Dice number" on the Supply cards is ignored, and only used for battle roles. While on missions, team mates will all give one Supply Card to the Captain face down. Sabotage Cards are revealed immediately, then the Captain may secretly discard one card for a new one, then he/she reveals the cards in hand to see if the Mission was successful.

    For the rules clarification in the description 'If a player draws a Supply card which says "Sabotage" they reveal it immediately. They do not take it into their hand. If they are dealt one at the beginning of the game, they trade it out for another card' I don't see this mentioned anywhere. Surely this can't be true and literally defeats the whole point on the infected person being able to sabotage missions...

    Are the character cards chosen at random? Or are players allowed free choice of their character, as long as it's from a stack with the most remaining characters? The rulebook seems to imply that players are offered free choice. Also, if the captain sends an extra person to deal with smoke/fire in a room besides the one being investigated, does that player lose the opportunity to discard and draw at the end of the turn since they weren't "left behind in the rec room"?

  • @BoardGameCavern

    @BoardGameCavern

    6 жыл бұрын

    Free choice insofar as the player gets to choose from the stack(s) with the most cards at that time. This choice mechanic is meant to spread out the three job classifications (colors) to make sure the group has an equal distribution of each color. This insures that, when it comes time for a Captain to choose a team, the Captain has enough of a certain color to fulfill the requirements on the Mission Card. Great question. My read on the rules is that the player sent to deal with smoke/fire has to leave the rec room to do so, so they did not "stay behind." They will draw back up to 5 Supply cards at the end of the turn, but will not get to discard a card a draw a new one. Penalized for doing a good deed. lol From the rulebook: "All players who left the Rec Room during the turn must draw as many Supply cards as needed to return their hand to five cards. Players who remained in the Rec Room now may discard one card and draw a new one."

    If you gonna do tutorial , do it properly. Sabotage cards are NOT replaced by the captain or anyone with another card, they are resolved IMMEDIATELY . Otherwise what would be the point of those cards if u can just get rid of them. If the captain decides to swap a card , he DOESN'T look at the new card he drew , he shuffles the cards again and THEN looks. The cards that players discard if they want to are placed FACEDOWN , so if human player discards " sabotage " card, its not revealed to the whole team that he probably is human.
