Can an exhausted unit “defend” and do damage when the target of an attack?

No you can't, unless it's some kind of ability.

I have not had a good experience with this game. I've tried many different types of decks, different versions of those decks, and played dozens of games and I've come away with the feeling that this game is simplistic and unoriginal. It's mishmash of things from other card games, but ports over none of the nuance or strategy from those games. It's just about who gets the biggest pieces on the board first and once one player does, the game is over almost immediately. Matches are too fast, too frantic, and feel like you're just beating each other with the biggest stick possible. Every time I tied to develop strategy, the match still came down to who had the bigger unit. I'm baffled that this is the game Fantasy Flight is putting this big push behind. It's hard to see it catching on once the initial hype is over. I guess we'll see, but it just wasn't for me.

In one way, yes I do agree with you, but then again if you just want an easy, simle TCG without having to put down hourts and hours, this is perfect. Also for new players that wants to get into the hobby, then this is great. But of course if you are looking for a heavy TCG where you can spend hours, well this is not it :)
