How To Play The Swan by Saint-Saens (Bow Control, Continuous Vibrato, & Shifting Tips)

Today is a cello tutorial on how to play The Swan or Le cygne from The Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens. I am giving some detailed tips and tricks so that you can have a smooth sound with the right type of vibrato, seamless shifts so that it sound continuous, and also exercises so that you have perfect bow control. The idea is that it sounds like the swan is gliding peacefully and smoothly on a lake.

I finally know why I couldn’t play the violin way back in school; I wasn’t breathing because I wanted to concentrate so much. You are a good teacher.

Beautiful. The Swan is the song I want to play for my grandchildren, who are now old enough to appreciate it. Plus, our last name is Swan. As an older adult returning to cello and lessons, the vibrato and dynamics are still a challenge. Your lesson is so helpful, as are all your tutorials. Thank you.

good luck! I think that's beautiful. I started cello in january and my dad just started viola. vibrato is the trickiest part for me too.

It's nice to see how you do the fingerings! I lost the music I learned this from when I was a teenager, and recently started playing it again because my pianist brother and I wanted to play something together for fun.
