I’m in a cover band right now and even though I’ve idolized Eddy since I was a kid, I’ve never actually attempted to play his stuff...long story short...I didn’t think it was possible to respect him more as a musician

I remember playing a high school keg party with a rival band, and the guitar player played this. I was completely devastated! Now all I have to do is find a time machine. Damn.....

Ednerd - yep. That's what people did back in the day. No KZread. Just endless stop, rewind, play. Stop, rewind, play. Buy a new tape cause the first one was stretched to shit. That or buy the tabs and I couldn't find that back in Newcastle Australia in 1979. I still struggle getting this intro down to the speed of the record but, hey, so it goes. Respect to you mate.

Ednerd I hear you..100% agree.. new generation don't even know how hard it is to figure out such licks through cassette tapes.imagine yourself in Europe in the early 90's and not in USA so have limited access to Guitar mags and Instructional videos.So no tabs bro! Here in the U.S. I used a turntable, set it at 16rpm from 33 1/3rpm, tuned down my guitar and then constantly played a part, lifted the needle & set it down again over and over and over. Lol. Learned a lot of VH and LZ that way. Those were the days.

Agreed. People don't seem to realize there was no internet way back then so obviously it's a LOT harder to learn guitar and master new techniques. We should respect all the guitarists in the 60's-90's because many of them were either self-taught or they had to innovate tricks on a guitar. Most of the time was just them figuring out playing whole pieces on their own. Not everyone could afford going to a music teacher considering that not many people were good at guitar to begin with. That's how I see it.

Whoever is shooting shade at EVH, doesn't know music, period.

Let's not forget that what made Eddie a legend was not the fact that he could play this intro. (Many guys in bar bands can play it, too.) It's the fact that he composed it.

I thought the same thing. Ed has proven he's capable of anything, but this song still stands out (to me) as the definition of Edward Van Halen.

i don't agree that most guys in 'the local bar band can play it'. i live in LA where theres thousands of insane guitarists. Im guessing quite a few of them couldn't properly play this. i do agree with the idea of what you're saying though.. but it's going to take me a few to get this down. this guy has obviously studied EVH in depth. and no, i'm not basing my opinion on how hard it might be for me.

True , the only problem is that the band didn’t actually write good songs. They’re one of the few bands I can think where there is a great drummer, great bassist, great singer , revolutionary guitar player, But the songs themselves as a whole would be utterly forgettable, if it wasn’t for eddies ground-braking guitar parts I mean , the songs just feel like they’re made for jocks in high school to listen to

I always felt Ed Van Halen was one of the greatest rhythm guitarists I ever heard. Lead guitarist he was good, but too choppy for me. My choice for greatest lead guitarists of all time are Neal Schon and Steve Lukather. But I have to also say that both of those guys were incredible rhythm.guitarists also.

I don't know who would press dislike for this....the guy absolutely nailed it,and he does a very good job of explaining it

10 minutes to learn 20 seconds of guitar riffs. Like everyone says, you can analyze anything and learn to play it, but to create it in the first place is otherworldly. When Joe Satriani says "this is impossible to play", it says something... Miss you Ed... Nice job on the video!

How does someone like this guy learn to be able to copy something like this. That's the beauty of KZread. When I first picked up a guitar in the late 70s the was nothing but a " bert weedon play in a day " book. Which was quite useless. Beginners nowadays are totally spoilt for choice. a young beginner will probably be further on in a week than I was in a year. Good luck to them and enjoy your chosen instrument

Great lesson, thanks! Eddie has said that he was trying to mimic the slap techniques used by funk bass players. In the process he obviously came up with something very cool and made it his own, as Ed always does.

@MerkinMuffy I'm replying just in case you don't understand the concepts of Ed and his tapping harmonics. You can play an open note, then play a series of natural harmonics at the 5th, 7th and 12th frets by lightly touching the string as you pick just above the fret wire (there are others, especially if you listen to Mattias Eklundh). If you play a fretted note say at the 3rd string, 9th fret...just tap 5, 7 and 12 frets higher and you'll get the harmonics to sound really nice. So you will tap on the 14th, 16th and 21st frets. Just tap 5, 7 and 12 frets higher than whatever note you are fretting and you'll get these harmonics. it's just a matter of doing the quick math to let you know where to tap. Eddie would do this quickly on adjoining strings as in the 'Mean Street' part of his live solo (Live Without a Net). Once you get it, it's really quite easy to remember and then you can apply it to your own licks. This is what he is doing during the 'Mean Street' tapping from the album. He's just utilizing what harmonic he wants to tap as he's fretting different notes. Hope this helps anyone out there to visually see the technique clearer.

Excellent job of breaking this down into easily learnable chunks. And you got right to the meat of how to play this riff without going into to too much unnecessary explanation of what you are playing, as so many other videos tend to do. There has to be that assumption that if you are trying to learn a riff of this level, that you already know how to play guitar. Good job Mike.

@@srwven Honestly, it started when the internet came out. Even today's internet guitar players all sound the same, and all play the same way. My versions of songs look so different than what we see on here. Us old schoolers sat with a turntable on one side, our amp on the other.. you know what I mean 😬.

@@Scottocaster6668: I do, I'd set my turntable speed from 33-1/3rpm down to 16rpm, tune my guitar down to pitch and spend hours lifting and resetting the arm to the part I was learning over and over. Had to learn the leads in short sections. lol.

You feel like you accomplished something. 2 days ago I decided to go back in time and figure out "Fever" (Judas Priest). Let me tell you, the kid STILL has it 🤣👍. What makes it easier is that they, like most bands from that era are tuned 440/standard.

Delivering the Goods, Hell Bent for Leather, Electric Eye, Another Thing Comin' etc.That's when I really knew how under rated Glenn Tipton truly was. He played his leads in a lot of different areas of the neck than most guitarists. Very unique. Didn't really notice it until I would start learning one of his leads. Our cover band played a shit load of Priest, Led Zep, AC/DC, Black Sabbath & several of Motley Crue's songs from Shout at the Devil, the only album we did covers from. And of course VH & The JHE, too.

i have watched satsuma and that dude is spot on and his tone is good . How the hell did eddie come up with this let alone as an intro to a song?Truly a gifted talented humanoid

It's honestly amazing that in this day and age, 34 years after the album "Fair Warning" came out, people are still struggling with this riff! I still don't see anyone playing quite like Eddie did. This is the best lesson out there for it and you play it right and teach it right. Some guys play it right and really don't teach it right. Ed developed the pattern from part of the drum part on Light Up The Sky. I was the first person to figure it out. Blew people's minds when I told them. I figured it out after listening to this intro about 1,000 times and one day was really dialed in listening to VHII. I was like Oh Snap that's it.
