Great video! It occurred to me during this how similar this can be to basic poly synth sound with a basic “organ envelope” (ie 0 attack, 0 release) and then maybe a bit of a resonant filter envelope for Wah-like effect. Playing style can work for both!

I know a clavinet's sound when I hear it, but I hadn't put much thought into style or technique and how it's different. Aside from Stevie Wonder, I often hear it in the 70s songs from ELO - Evil Woman, Last Train to London, etc. and now I get how it's 'pokey' as you described it, as well as some of the other effects added to it. Nice video.

I used to own a real Clavinette. It was great but eventually just wore out. I couldn't get new rubber hammers for it. I'm not sure of the model but it predated the D6. It only had 2 rocker switches. I was always a very loud player back then and I found that if I held a mote like middle G, it would feed back like a guitar! If I leaned into the note I could actually bend it up a bit too! Marvelous!

@@nickmoloney9820 I bet I could do it on my Krog Kronos. I'd prefer to play the sound from my King Korg though. The Kronos has a piano feel and the actual Clavinet has a very light short throw on it's keyboard. This meant you could easily play very very fast. It just begged to be funky too.

Guitar voicings - put some 4ths on top. Move the 4ths around. Find alternating gospel triads to play over the same left hand. On a major chord, go back and forth between it and the ii or IV. On a minor chord go back and forth between it and the IV or VII or III. Backcycle from the VII to the IV to the I. Alternate left and right hands rhythmically or try a banjo roll type rhythm. Keep it percussive. Put a phaser on it. Overcompress. Have fun…

My pet peeve about Clavinet playing is that assumption that you *have to* do that clichéd funky staccato chicken-clucking style. It’s a really nice and different sound when just played like any normal electric piano. Listen to the Clav in 100 Years Ago by the Rolling Stones - I wish more people played Clavinet like that.

I know, but a lot of the time "close enough" is good enough. If I had all the space and money in the world, I'd have a real Clavinet, a real Harpsichord, a real Grand Piano, a real Rhodes... Heck, I'd love a real Pipe Organ... But a good digital keyboard like this and some VST's will just have to do. At least until millions of dollars fall into my lap ;)
