A Look Inside Lachy Doley's WHAMMY CLAV (Clavinet)
Музыка
An inside look at my whammy Clavinet and how it works. My Hohner D6 Clavinet fitted with the CastleBar Whammy system. What a Funk and Blues machine.
The Castlebar Whammy system was designed by Buddy Castle as an add on to the original Hohner clavinet. Less than 20 were originally installed

I was today years old when I learned these aren't just electric keyboards
The ability to bend notes up a whole step and add true vibrato as desired (rather than constant amplitude varying tremolo done by the amp like a Wurly) makes it much more expressive and “vocal”. A stringed keyboard like the clavinet is perfect for this in true analog manner. Certainly the coolest “key-tar” I’ve ever seen!
You HAVE to be the 1st person to explain that 'machine' so simply put! You're the best Lachy!

I had no idea what a Clavinet was like on the inside ... apparently so simple and with such a unique and cool sound. And there are strings ... I'm a guitar player and that must be why I like this instrument so much. Thank you, Lachy.

HATS OFF TO YOU SIR. TAKE A BOW FROM MY SIDE FOR REVEALING THE MAGIC OF THIS INSTRUMENT.
When I first saw you play the Clavinet (never had heard of that before) on FB (recommended for me...???) I had no idea there were actual strings and assumed that it was the flexation of the whammy bar and your hand position that was bending the notes using induction sort of like a theremin. Boy was I wrong. Who knew? Love what you do and to watch you rock out and sing. You totally Rock! Much Love... ❤️🐾

@@LachyDoley Yeahhhh brother, the vibe was thick..you are welcome.
Finally my question got a clear answers... 😁
Very cool! I've been a guitarist my whole life professionally, but one of the biggest bands in Saint Louis came to see me play 1 night on just pure chance and saw me playing my vintage keyboard rig that night, mainly a Hammond organ and full sized leslie that glowed in the dark. Well it left quite an impression on them and when their keyboard player quit a few weeks later they immediately thought of the guy with the glow in the dark Leslie cabinet. So when I got a call from them I thought cool I get to play guitar with these guys! Wrong! As it gradually sunk in I was going to be stuck behind a keyboard... But I wasn't really inclined to tell them no I would just be likely to start sneaking more guitar in... But when I showed up to their practice space there were already 2 guitarists and the singer also played some guitar... And they were dead set on not having anymore guitarists.... So enter the D6... I immediately started modifying and making that D6 my guitar analogue... And I did everything except add a stupid whammy bar to! Which is the one thing I was missing so much! I play a vintage strat and I have worked extensively with strat style guitars... Both modifying, buildin. But everywhere we played there were people coming up and complementing the lead guitarist on the amazing solo that he played and invariably it was on a song that he didn't play a solo on... lol! And incidentally, I suck at keywords! I am serviceable at best but I do have a good feel and chord theory and rhythm theory and everything else... Enough to know that I suck at keyboards! But I played it through an MXR phase 100, dynacomp, noise gate, 2coriginal ts9 tube screamers, Foxx WA Machine (best WA WA ever made, bar none), lovetone doppelganger, zoom driver (excellent brit style chunk OD IN A BOX), WHAMMY PEDAL AND FLANGE, all going through my most important pedal... my volume pedal... or GAS/THROTTLE... as a long time Hammond player, the expression pedal became part of my sound when my guitar hooked into my midi through the Roland pickup... and that made me the best pickup player around... because all I needed was a hand signal to turn up or down, making me every band's ideal sub for everything but drums! I have some clav tips for the tech... I've been modding them a lot lately.

Well? This was a first for me. I was amazed! This is awesome! A whammy bar on a harpsichord. Harpsichord Junior. The Jimi Hendrix thing you did. Simply Awesome! That was the baddest ass guitar solo I have ever heard played on a keyboard! Better than any stupid electronic Sympathizer. How unique! Certainly nobody can call you a, Lachy. Or rather? They can. Great job, Lachy! Certainly if we call you a, Lachy, now. You certainly deserve it. Nice to know you! And what an awesome modification to that instrument. Truly unique. The only guitar you can play like a keyboard. A harpsichord that would make, Bach, roll over in his grave! Beethoven. Rocking you 2 by 2. But you get the idea. What a great combination of thoughts. You created here. I love it! Awesome instrument! RemyRAD

Unreal David!! Thanks so much
Watched your Foreplay/Long Time video yesterday, and it was very well done on everyone's part, but I gotta say I was intrigued by that keyboard. I know what a Clav is, but never seen one with the whammy on it before. thanks for the explanation.
It's no surprise that all the serious players from the USA want to try your modded Clav. They've all heard about it as an idea, but you actually have it. Was interesting to see those US folk beg to try it without my personal understanding. Then I got to hear it. I suddenly understood. And that mofo sounds AMAZING!!!! Obviously helps that you CAN play :)

Yeah you'd be crazy not to wanna try it. It's an awesome machine
I want one!!!!
I'm that gal with the red hand held AX1 pic that made a comment before & you responded to it. I 1st had a Clav C. Then later got a Clav D. I always kept all the stops on the left down because when they are all down there's no degree of mute. Because the clav is bad about feeding back, I always wanted as much out of it as I could get. Man, I don't how you figured out how to put a whammy bar on the right end. Amazing. Also I always thought I had 3 separate gauges of strings (rather than 4), with the almost bottom 3rd wound like quitar. By the time I git the Clav D I put it thru a Flanger (because clavs are famously out of tune), then a Boss Overdrive for solos & lastly thru a Fender fuzz/wa...later got a Cry Baby. Personally, I think all clavs should come with a wa pedal! Anyway, I like your work & would like to come see you play whenever you swing thru the Dallas area.
