"How to Play Sonic Riders" is a common question I see concerning people wanting to try this game for the first time. Sonic Riders is one of the best and most enjoyable racing games I have ever played, but it comes with the burden of a very high barrier to entry. In addition, the game’s tutorial and manual do a poor job of explaining the game's mechanics, intimidating most players enough to turn them off from ever experiencing the greatness that lies within. This has resulted in many new players arriving at the conclusion that the game is simply bad, like other Sonic games that were rushed in development.
I personally believe that objectively speaking, Sonic Riders is actually very good, but the difficulty in the game welcoming new players with open arms has resulted in a disconnect. One where experienced players love it and see it for what it is, and new players do not understand why it is so well-liked. As a kid, I struggled to learn how to play this game with minimal resources, but overcoming that trial was an extremely gratifying experience. I guess when you're a kid you have more free time to spend figuring things out. Even to this day, I cannot find good resources explaining how this game is played.
I have created this video as a means to fill a gap within the community. I consider myself to be an expert at this game. I hope this tutorial video will provide a solution to this problem and attract more potential players. If you have any questions, ask down below! I will do my best to help you.
If you guys are looking for more from Sonic Riders, such as a rebalancing patch or online play, I highly recommend Sonic Riders Tournament Edition, which you can look into at the links below. This community has been extremely welcoming to me and I cannot thank them enough for their kindness.

@@mr.kevin1209 Remade tracks in the same locations and with less boost pads? Free Riders has very linear design, but that's in huge part because of the fact it was made to accommodate the Kinect. Removing most boost pads so that you have to take the turns manually and adding a few extra curves and obstacles on each track would definitely make them good enough to be bundled with the others imo.

Things I did not know: - You can get off turbulence by pressing L+R at the same time. - Holding back on the control stick allows you to do a high jump and holding forward allows you to do a long jump

  • @PSPMan

    @PSPMan

    2 жыл бұрын

@Daniel Long/High jumps are the first topic I discuss at 13:12 - Advanced Techniques looking back I did explain it kind of poorly, it's not the size of the jump, it's how close the next part of the track is after the jump. So, if it's a short distance away doing a high jump will get you up there and if it's a long distance away doing a long jump will get you up there. the first jump in digital dimension is also reversed so in order to get up there you have to do a long jump instead of a high jump

When I played regularly, I always liked to drop a tornado just before a white dash pad. Racers following me would hit the tornado and as a result hop over the dash pad. I however would hit the dash pad and speed off. Another prime tornado drop spot is the edge of a jump ramp (with a charged jump I would launch off the ramp and anyone following would fall to their deaths). That's just all kinds of devious, but who cares about AI racers anyway? For best results, wait until Level 3 as the tornados dropped are the largest.

Very well put together. Much more concise than the in-game tutorial. I'm a veteran myself but I was curious If there were any tricks I didn't know about. Turns out there was one. That ramp on the 90 degree turn on the first upper path in night chase is a wall grind. In my 15 years+ of playing this game I never noticed that. Saying that, there is one advanced trick that I think ought to mentioned: In the rules settings while choosing a Grand Prix, YOU CAN TURN OMOCHAO OFF! Sadly I don't think you can do this for Story mode but for Free Races, it'll save your sanity. He says the dumbest crap constantly. "-character- has successfully jumped into the air'' WTF? It's a real bit of dialog, I'm not even kidding. Oh and if you're new to the game, you're gonna hear "Oh, he failed to land correctly" A LOT!

Nice. My favourite thing to do in this game is getting onto all those short cuts by jumping off of the ramps. Never knew how to do it consistently at first but when I figured it out it was so satisfying and it kinda breaks the game if you ask me. I also never knew how to use the flight shortcuts when I was younger; I always used to waggle the control stick up and down rapidly as I thought that was what the game was telling me to do. 😅 Also never thought I’d actually learn something new here. Didn’t know you could get off of turbulences by pressing both L and R holy shit.

That's great to hear honestly. Upon release I had a hard time getting it out to the right people so i'm glad to hear it made it to a Riders Central server. I think it has so little views because the audio editing is bad cause i didn't know how to at the time, and i had blended frames turned on in Vegas while rendering, plus the fps is locked at 30 when the game runs much higher than that. Glad to hear it's useful to people!

Honestly, when it comes to the tornado (L1+R1) I use it a lot when I was just starting out, especially when I still don't know the maps too well and the races are too close for comfort. Whenever I know for sure that I am making turbulence and the CPUs are riding it, I would drop a tornado and boost immediately and it actually gives me a solid few seconds to gain distance cause it throws the other racers into the air. I found this out when I was playing this game with my friend and we made the tornado on accident, so I know what happens if you hit it. Of course after a while I don't really use it much but it's still a good trick to have up my sleeve. Also, love the tutorial. It definitely helps the people trying to pick up this game. And fun fact, if you do the story mode and all the challenges, you can unlock super sonic and challenge yourself to a race while managing ring consumption. Probably one of my favorite gear in the game

It was so freaking cool, hover boards, the speed, the cutscenes, the music and the hwole high tech future aestetic was SUPER cool and the veriety and wildness of the tracks were NUTS!.. Police chases, high tech cities, sandy ruinds, lush forests, floating ancient cities (hardest fucking thing i ever did as a kid).. I had to learn everything on my own as i didn't know english at the time. So i fully masterd the game by simple trial, error & experimenting. God i really wish we would get a new riders game. The more recent regular cart racers i feel REALLY don't fit sonic and the cast at all.. Like why would the fastest thing alive drive a car?? If we're on hoverboards speed and everything is up to the imagination.

if i can make a recomendation, cause i've been playing adventure 2 on steam parts of the game initially seem horribly designed. the game has the same issues riders has where it teaches the player very little specifically i'm talking about adventure 2's ranking system. it's not static and the required score to get A is different on every stage, for every mission. A quick google search will explain more

@@PSPMan I'll make sure to Google what you mean later. A-Ranks and their medals in Adventure 2: Battle are truly challenging to earn in that game in comparison to Adventure DX whenever I play them both. Knuckles and Rouge's stages are what I still struggle with the most due to the severely restricted radar compared to SADX, where I could glide as Knuckles and traverse Red Mountain easier, as my luck had the Master Emerald shards in the same radius whenever I replayed his campaign. Eggman and Tails' are what I can ace on my best days, and give up on on my worst. Sonic and Shadow's are whose stages I almost always replay the most, although I tend to speedrun their stages more instead of actually collecting rings, animals, GUN Robot's Chaos Drives, or performing tricks to score the best Ranks possible. Compared to 12 years ago, the most hindering thing that came to my experience was not having a memory card. My Gamecube is still in my possession, yet it sadly can't read the discs anymore.

Amazing video. You didn't miss anything, at least this is everything I know, and this is surely going to help newcomers to get Riders' gameplay pretty easily. However, I disagree with Tornadoes being useless. You see, as soon as you get control out of an automated section, you can do an Air Tornado, which essentially lets you trap your opponents after they're done with said sections. One example I always use this on, is Babylon Garden's loop. When I'm done, I do the Tornado and almost always trap the 2nd place behind me. Really, the Tornado is a good technique if you know when to use it. But the most important thing, is having lots of air, otherwise, yeah, it's just counterproductive.

16:42 i think you are really really missing out if you dont use special equipment that gives you abilities of other classes, like the witch broom which can grind on rails. Use that with Knuckles or Tails and you can both knock cars/fly through hoops and grind on rails. Or magic carpet which gives you ability of an air class, so you can pick knuckles or sonic (knock down cars or grind on rails) plus fly through hoops. Its too OP for multiplayer, but its cool as hell. I remember my cousins gave me their PS2 for 3 days and i had to learn and figure out everything this game had to offer in just 3 days. I rememeber i unlocked every character except one, and found out all the secret mechanics and also the ability to jump into secrets by holding back. Didn't know i could jump to other ones by holding forward!!! Also the air trails were driving me mad, never knew that i could hop off them by pressing L1 and R1 that would save me a lot of headache back in the day!

Managed to get Riders again for PC and having a good time with it. I can mind having it for either the Gamecube or PS2 back in the day. I think the first thing that really reminded me of Riders again was that Project Hero fan game, which really does feel like a throwback to the classic Adventure style featuring Sonic, Tails & Knuckles. The fact alone that its got that Adventure thing going is fantastic, more so for Tails being true his SA1 incarnation, meaning he can stretch his legs and run again, rather than being confined to the mech like SA2. But then after showing off what the game can do "press F3 to pull out a Gear from Riders." WTF!? And just like that even with the Adventure style game, and SA1 Tails, it went up massively in how great it is, even if you couldn't actually do tricks. Hopefully the guy can get an actual game made, and/or gets picked up by Sega for another Mania like independent game from the fan community like Taxman and Co.

Excellent guide, thanks for clearing up all these weird details that the game never even bothers attempt to explain. Picked up the game recently on a whim and I was having a good time but I could just not understand how the AI was always so far up ahead of me. A sidenote, which may as well be completely obsolete knowledge at this point, but I've played the PS2 version and it seems that if you drop far behind enough, the three items you were talking about do spawn a good amount of time, so probably the rates differ according to the version you're playing?
