    I always had a hard time figuring out the angle and managed to only do it on the G string and only at certain frets, but this helped a lot. Within minutes got it working anywhere and on any string.

    The explanation that drove it home for me was this: "Pick the string and drive your thumb through the string by rotating your picking hand 90 degrees". If done correctly you'll get a perfect harmonic every time if played in the correct position. For my guitar, the easiest position is just behind the neck pickup (I believe this is a 5th interval). Yes, high gain is also important.

  • @Samjamguitar

    When I was a kid and trying to figure out how to do harmonics without any instruction, I noticed that sometimes when I had my fingers curled to hold the pick that my ring finger would sometimes not be tucked all the way into my hand and the finger nail would touch the string at the same time as the pick. That quickly became my way of turning the pinch harmonics on or off very consistently... with my ring finger lowering from my closed picking hand like airplane landing gear. It was probably 2 or 3 years later when I found out most people choke up on the pick and use the fleshy part of their thumb, which feels completely alien to me after learning my way. ☮❤🎶

    Unless 12 frets above the fretted note lies over the fretboard! in which case you would half the distance again from this point and produce a 2nd octave harmonic.... these are much more common👌

    In that particular Patreon video I was actually using the Tone King Imperial MKII foundation preset from Neural DSP (amp simulator plugin). You could get very similar results with overdrive from a tube amp with both reverb and a small amount of delay in the effects loop. You could also try dialling in a similar tone with a modeler style amp such as the BOSS KATANA, simply get an overdriven sound that slightly breaks up when you play harder and add reverb and delay to taste! hope that helps👍

    Just to add some information: The main reason why you should select the bridge pickup is that essentially you are suppressing some of the string‘s many wave movements with your thumb, so when the place where you pick and „pinch“ is near the middle or neck pickup - which it is most of the time - then there is almost no string vibration happening close to your pickups and you won’t hear the harmonic clearly.

    Great video but I still need help! My pinches sound like ZZ Top or Van Halen but not like Zakk Wylde!! Can someone tell me if it's simply not possible to hit a pinch harmonic like Zakk Wylde on every high gain amp. My amp is a Yamaha Thr10x very high gain but small amp but never sounds like Zakk! I hit it in every way possible on my thumb using my Zakk Gibby but it never sounds right. Is it more likely my amp or just my technique still? Tried forever to sound like his pinches!

    It would have been nice to have this video like 14 years ago when I was trying to learn to do this. Now I don't play anymore and feels bad.

    There is no "correct way" to do pinch harmonics, however it works for you is the correct way. I'd have quit playing guitar if i had an instructor insist on holding a pic like they suggest, ive never done it that way and mastered pinch harmoniics decades ago.

    @@Samjamguitar I just looked I guess I was wrong. I don't know maybe terminology has changed over the last 30 years. I see everyone is calling them "pinch harmonics". Seems strange to me as you aren't pinching anything and you're mostly using the side of your thumb on your picking hand but whatever. I'm a big boy I admit when I'm wrong. I learned most of my stuff before the Internet was a thing.

    Choke up on your pick leaving 'just the tip' barely protruding from the grip. Not rocket science. Once you hit it it's easy. Not fret, note, or string dependent.

  • @Samjamguitar

    @Samjamguitar

    2 ай бұрын

    Definitely don't want too much pick protruding👍 the technique itself is not fret,note or string dependant however the harmonic you intend to hear very much is, as the location moves!

    Learned to do this a couple days and for me it helped to turn the thumb alot like he said, almost turning the pick sideways (try to not do it too much otherwise it won’t ring as good) and the most important thing is to find the sweet spot. Even if you do it with good technique in the wrong spot it won’t ring out, so if you’re not sure if you got it, then you didn’t. When you hit the sweetspot you definitely know it

  • @Nofrontleverforme

    @Nofrontleverforme

    Also idk if I can explain this but try to make the motion as fluid as possible. Not akwardly trying to touch the string with your thumb. Just find the correct pick and hand position and sweetspot and flick your hand down. If you do that enough then you might accidentally do it and after you do it once or a couple of times you might understand it better
