How To Play Piano for Beginners, Lesson 2 || Starting to Read Music

Музыка

This is the second lesson in my series of "how to" piano tutorials for absolute beginners. In it, I start looking at how we read piano music, beginning with the five-line stave and the treble clef, which is usually used to notate the right hand. The piano keyboard has many more notes than there are on a single stave, so I also discuss how to read notes that lie outside the stave, using ledger lines. There is an accompanying PDF with notes and exercises.
My full "how to play piano for beginners" course consists of 21 complete lessons, with some extra videos of piano repertoire. The series covers the basics of how to play the piano, plus information on how to read music for piano. Each tutorial comes with a PDF download, and all the lessons are completely free of charge. If you're looking for the best way to learn to play the piano, this is the place to start!

Hi Bill, I hope you are still viewing your comments. I am 65 years old and my entire life have wanted to learn the piano. I remembered sitting on the front step of my best friends home listening to her take piano lessons and wishing we had a piano so that I could take lessons. I bought myself a keyboard in my 30's and tried to learn with a book but raising children made this impossible so I gave up. I have been struggling over the last 10 years with illness and sadly all my attention has been focused on trying to make it through a day relatively pain free. I finally decided I need something else to focus on that would bring me joy and so I said to myself, "What about piano lessons?". The blessings of HaShem fell upon me immediately when I found your youtube and I want you to know that this gift that you have given to so many is so valuable. I went out and bought myself a keyboard yesterday and started this morning! May you be blessed for being such a blessing! Shalom from Jerusalem!

I certainly am still viewing them - shalom from North Yorkshire! It always absolutely makes my day to hear that my videos are helping people, so thanks very much for letting me know. Good luck with the rest of the course, and please do let me know if you have any questions or run into difficulties. Long experience of seeing people going through this course suggests that those who do best are the ones who really nail down the basics and do lots of reinforcement practice of the first few lessons - that means you have a strong foundation for when things start to get a bit trickier, around lesson 9. So try to practise every day if you can, and really work hard at memorising stuff like note names on the keyboard and in treble and bass staves - it makes things way easier later on. Behatzlacha!

Hi Bill, thank you so much for this series. It has been almost 7 years since you uploaded this and I can't imagine the number of people you have taught and helped and from multiple geographies too! What I loved the most is how you made me associate "oh it's so hard and frustrating" feeling to something positive - my brain creating new circuitry and being familiar with the subject. I embrace that feeling not only with piano but with whatever I am learning and it helps me to keep pushing through and not drop things out of frustration.

  • @BillHilton

Thank you! Yes, I like to think it’s helped a few people. I tried doing some rough maths on this the other day, based on how many people have watched the final few videos in the series, and making allowance for random watches/curiosity/revisits etc. Anyway, I think the number of people who have actually completed is into the thousands - around five thousand, perhaps, which I’m pretty happy about. I hope you make good progress yourself - let me know how you get on!

Bill, Marge Ball here, was just reading through what some people have written, Wow there are a lot of older people starting to learn piano. I am so glad about that because it will help with the memory of people our age and also keep the bones limber. This is a great service to older people. Great job that you teach well enough for us seniors to understand and follow what we need to do to play piano.

I'm picking up piano again in my mid 30s after having has lessons when I was 5-7 years old. I learned how to read sheet music back then and couldn't play very complicated stuff but I had music books for the first couple of grades and I could play all the songs in there from the sheet music relatively easily. Your explanation of EGBDF brought back so many memories and as soon as I saw it I said the phrase "Every Good Boy Deserves Food" and had a wave of nostalgia since that must have been the phase my piano teacher taught me back in the day to learn the treble clef. Amazing what your mind can remember and I'm finding myself picking things up that I haven't done in almost 30 years! Can't wait to follow along with the whole course and I hope I can get to be as good as I was when I was 7 years old again haha.

Good to hear! That's the amazing thing about stuff you learn at that age: it sticks at a very deep level. You'll probably find that you actually have a small advantage in terms of physical playing over an absolute beginner at the same age as you, purely because you did that early work. Good luck, let me know how you get on and don't hesitate to shout if you have any problems/questions!

I enjoyed simply piano until I started extremely having difficulty understanding the sheet music. You however have done An amazing job and humbled me even as I’m new and I’m going back to the basics of studying sheet music. I’ve been on this lesson for like a week and it amazes me that I didn’t know this as well as it thought or simply piano made me think. I’m looking forward to future lessons and ultimately play classical music with confidence.

I just wanted to say, I have subscribed to your channel for a while. Practiced octaves, major scales, hand independence, etc.., But dreaded learning reading music sheets, and I must say that it isn't half as boring as I thought. Also the way you show takes the boringness out. I want to thank you for the time you put in this. I went to just wanting to play by eye to wanting to learn music from scratch in general, all because of you. You inspired me to go further into the music area alot more. Thank you again sir

Glad to hear it, Jessica - that's often the way things go in the early days of learning: you work and work and work at something and it seems impossible, then *ping* you just get it. If you need any help or have any questions at any stage, just give me a shout.

@@BillHilton Thanks Bill! I’m currently on lesson 6 but I always go back to previous lessons too. One thing I’m struggling on is reading the sheet music while playing at the same time, I usually just end up memorising what’s on the sheet and the fingering and then playing it, how do I improve on that? Thanks 🙏🏾

  • @BillHilton

    @BillHilton

    3 жыл бұрын

@@jessicamarie6448 You’re welcome! The short and boring answer to the sheet music thing is “just keep doing what you’re doing”. Everyone except the very best sightreaders (and I’m not one of those...) uses partial memorisation to some extent, so it’s not something to worry about. As you work on an increasing variety of music you’ll find that the amount you have to memorise gradually lessens. At this stage, though, it’s all about gritting your teeth, digging deep and pushing through stuff that (for now) seems tough. If you want some practice tips, you might find this tutorial useful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ip9t0dyLYtW2f7Q.html

You’re welcome, Oliver - keep on pushing! Experience says the people who finish the course successfully tend to be those who work hard on the basics in the first six lessons or so - there’s a lot of stuff that’s tempting to hurry over, but if you get it nailed it leaves you in a strong position for the tougher stuff in later lessons. Shout if you have any questions or stuff I can help with! 👍

This is fantastic - I played violin for 6 years and could site read music decently, and even took a year of music theory in high school focusing on staff notation which I took to very well - but I'll be damned if I haven't lost most of my reading skills in the almost 10 years since. This is good for beginners to reading music but also as a refresher for someone who maybe knew it at some point and has since forgotten... I can peck out a tune with no problem but anything further is beyond me, so I'm glad to have this tool to finally learn how to use a piano in a way that is actually helpful! THANK YOU~

No problem at all - really glad to have been of help! Reading the feedback there have actually been quite a few people who have been using this as a refresher rather than as a from-scratch course, which is kind of pleasing, and just goes to show that you can never quite predict the many and varied uses people will find for stuff you put on KZread. I hope you continue to make good progress, and do give me a shout if you have any questions :)

One thing I have noticed that helped me is how each note will alter from being on a line and then on a space in the next octave. The middle c is on a line under the staff, the next C is on a space in the staff, the next one is back on a line. The same is true for all notes. It's another hint to make it easier to remember where each note is. I recommend hitting the keys and imagining in your mind where it is on the staff. Keep doing this for every note again and again and eventually it will start to really settle in your head. I'm still a beginner but this has helped!
