Chi and Fieldy are the best bassists in their genre imo. Chi's feel when playing is amazing, to be able to play that stuff underneath Stef Carpenter's Meshuggah-gone-numetal riffs added this extra layer of harmony to their sound that they don't have anymore.

Chi added a really cool dynamic to the band that I think they really started to miss with Sergio. I think it's mostly because Sergio was probably told to play along with the guitar more often and didn't really show his face in the music until they made Ohms. Sergio is a great bassist himself but he shines way more in Quicksand than he did when he was with Deftones.

I agree he added something Sergio does not but maybe they are happy with that.

The records after Chi are great but Sergio lacked that Faith no More groove aligned with Abe’s drumming. Much props to the new dude Fred for playing Chi bass lines with groove live and clean.

Thanks for video, and the breakdowns, the deftones for me was part of music getting good again, everynight at 11pm was the daily countdown my own summer and the beautiful people. amungst other hard rocking aggressive music, what ever you want to call it, in your playing I noticed a blue pick around your thumb what is that? i love playing with a pic but hand problems I cant hold on to them very long, again thank you.

long scale and heavy gauge strings are the knack, I've got an ibanez 504 I keep 55-110s on for C# standard or drop C playing along with a perfect circle, mastodon, system, etc.

  • @Farewelltokingz

You can definitely do it. I’d recommend 50-110 for C# standard although you could probably use standard gauge down to drop C# (C# G# C# F#) as long as you some basic setup work.

@@jamesperkins6720 I have a 5 string fretted stingray that I can use for APC, one of my favorites, but I wanted to try the fretless specifically for some of the White Pony stuff. I almost bought a 5 string fretless but I much prefer to play 4 string, although I am warming up to the 5 string stingray. Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of bassists who write something that compliments the song and don't just play what the guitar plays. I think that's incredible stupid and short sighted to tell a bassist to just follow the guitar. The bass line is a different sonic region in the music and deserves to be experimented with just like the vocals and the background ambient synths and pads. The guitarist is just jealous because he's not the star of the show when he has to share it with the bassist.
