How to Play Hush by Deep Purple

Музыка

/ @nickfoleyuk
Hi folks, hope that you are all well? It's a lovely day here in the UK and the sun is shining, so I jumped into the studio (inspired by a new mutual friend) and decided to show you how to play Hush by Deep Purple on the Hammond Organ.
Its not an easy one, in places, and I have tried hard to do it, and Jon, some justice hope you like it!
Original Studio version here: • Deep Purple - Hush
Kula shaker Version: • Kula Shaker - Hush
I hope this helps, see you soon!

New to here, absolutely brilliant! I've only reasonable facsimiles of Hammond sounds in my arsenal; not bad, but not the real deal (E-Mu B3; Yamaha S-90; Nord Compact 73; Akai MPC 61-Key). Trying to describe the Hammond sound to bandmates, i can only elucidate that the thing sounds like it's 'breathing'! Looking forward to more of your material!

Thank you so much for this video. From your Kula Shaker link I eventually found the video of them doing Hush on the Chris Evans breakfast show. It absolutely flies.

Hello Nick! I haven't heard your channel in years, so it was good to see you pop up on my screen yesterday. To hold the high C down, I used a piano mute which is a wedge shaped piece of black rubber that a piano tuner inserts between two of the three strings, to play only one string at a time. He does this to set the temperment of the middle octave, usually C4 to C5, on which he bases a tuning for the entire keyboard. Enough about piano tuning... to hold the high C down, I'd wedge a mute between the wood and key. It takes a little practice to get it right, but simple enough to master -- easier than mastering a squabble. Take care not to jam it in there too quickly, or you can break a key. When I was finished playing the organ like a drum, it was easy enough to pull the mute out, in time with the beat of course, or using it to start a slide downward. You can learn to sustain any of the white keys this way, but you need time to use both hands on a waterfall keyboard -- to play high F, I'd hold up the adjacent E key with my left thumb, but you don't have as much space between the white keys as you do at the top end, so be gentle. Waterfall keys can be expensive to repair. I imagine anything on a 65 year-old Hammond is expensive to repair these days. Thanks for the channel, and my best regards.

the kula shaker version of 'Hush' is, as great as it is, a direct lift of the prisoners version..... James Taylor (of the James Taylor quartet) doesn't get enough love for his Hammond organ playing

I think Joe South wrote HUSH... Yes, after checking the credits on the Deep Purple LP record Shades of Deep Purple on Tetragrammaton Records released in 1968.

Jay Darlington is the original and best Kula Shaker organist, he's back with them for studio work i think. Any chance of a howto for playing Weirdo by The Charlatans? Anyway this was great!

I think the left hand here sounds clumsy. Far too right hand scalar dominant for the riffs for my taste.
