How to Play Guitar on Dust in the Wind by Kansas

A last-minute addition to the track lineup for Point of Know Return, "Dust in the Wind" would also be its greatest success. The guitar line for this song was written by Kerry Livgren as a finger exercise for learning fingerpicking. His wife, Vicci, heard what he was doing, remarked that the melody was nice, and encouraged him to write lyrics for it. Livgren was unsure whether his fellow band members would like it, since it was a departure from their signature style. After he played the demo for the band, there was a "stunned silence" and the band asked him, "Kerry, where has this been?" The title of the song is a Bible reference, paraphrasing Ecclesiastes: “I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man on earth, and I concluded: Everything he has accomplished is futile - like chasing the wind!"

I know this is an old video, but I have to mirror what everyone else has said. This is the best one I have seen. I have watched dozens of videos on this song and I was always missing something. This is the only video I have seen that mentions the accent on the third note. That makes all the difference.

Very nice lesson. I came across it & figured I’d watch as a refresher. I just realized I play the picking pattern using my thumb on both bottom notes (since that’s so much of Travis-type picking I guess) then just use index & middle for the higher strings. I tried doing it the way you’re showing and it’s freakin me out! LOL

Kerry Livgren( the songwriter ) states in his autobiography " Seeds of Change" that Kansas performs the song with two guitars, one tuned differently than the other to (partially) achieve the sound from the album version.

Kerry Livgren plays this in Travis style with the thumb alternating between the 4th and 5th strings rather than the classical style of this lesson where the thumb stays on the fifth string. I've always played it Travis style, which is much easier for me and makes the syncopation feel more natural. Most fingerstyle guitar (but maybe not classical style) uses an alternating thumb pattern. You only need thumb, index and middle finger to do it Travis style. No need to involve ring finger. See Marty Schwartz youtube lesson for learning it Travis style. Either way, the notes come out the same.

  • @aalb1970

I also prefer to alternate the thumb between the 3 base strings. Seems more appropriate for travis picking fingerstyle.
