CORRECTIONS
27:39. Green should have drawn reputation tiles FIRST. The controller of the sector is ALWAYS considered to have entered the sector first (this is not explicitly stated in the rulebook, but the publisher confirmed)
At 23:20 I say Red's ships entered LAST, but on 24:10 I say Red's ships entered before mine (which is wrong). This means red's interceptors should have been placed LAST in initiative order.

    So after finally being able to get together with friends after we all got vaccinated, I got to play Eclipse with my friends after having the game for over a year. It was an amazing experience and I attribute a lot of that to just rewatching your videos to make sure I knew the rules enough to teach them and get the game going without bogging down while teaching it. I know you said you like the rulebook, but trying to learn the game through it was very daunting with the large pages and small text size. I was able to confidently teach the game because of this and had such a blast that it may honestly be my #1 game now! Thank you so much for these videos. I was upset when other How to Play channels didn't have videos for Eclipse, but these videos taught the game so cleanly that I'm very glad I found this channel because of it. Thanks again so much. I played this for the first time yesterday, I knew most of the rules from the 1st edition. We played 4p game, I found this video very helpful, especially in the combat phase. I found combat in my play through very confusing when there was 3 fleets at the Galactic centre at the last round. I thought a 9th round would have been nice as we couldn’t claim the centre hex.

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the combat near the end of the game tends to get pretty epic because you don't get points for your ships, you might as well use them to claim as many juicy hexes as you can for victory points! I think it's pretty normal to have a first game where people are scared to take on the GCDS in the middle, but it's really not that bad (assuming you use the basic GCDS blueprint), with the right techs you can take it well before round 8.

    @@TheGameLocker I'm actually not so sure about the effectiveness because I've just bought my game, it didn't even got to me yet. I'm just looking for the rules and the things I didn't understand/wasn't sure. But there was one guy saying that he could picture 3 scenarios where you wouldn't want to attack your opponent population: 1) You might want your opponent to go bankrupt due to excessive spending (and maybe trigger a domino effect with his systems) 2) You might want not to free your opponent's disk so he will not be able to occupy some other sector. 3) You might have an agreement with PLAYER A that you want to go attack PLAYER B (who is clearly winning), but to do so you have to cross PLAYER's A territories. He will allow you to do so as long as you don't attack those systems. From what I've seen I imagine these scenarios are reeeeally unlikely to happen, but, in case it does happen (1 or 2), it could be more effective to attack some of the population.

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    @@tulioconcolato3963 Very interesting. Well my version of the rulebook says "When attacking population cubes, each ship MAY attack once with its non-missile weapons..." (emphasis mine). The use of "may" tells me you can choose which ships you want to attack population cubes with. So I would say you could decide which ships to attack with, but if you roll a hit you MUST assign the damage. That's my take. Hope that helps!

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    2 жыл бұрын

    In your example, aside from having a battle or flying in another ship to unpin it, the only way player A’s ship can leave that sector is if player A had the Cloaking Device tech (which makes it so that it takes TWO opponent ships to pin each one of your ships). The pinning rule is super important because it allows you to protect your valuable home sector by preventing opponents from flying straight through your defenses; it allows you to set up defenses in a sector with lots of your own ships so your opponent will have a tough time getting through. Does that make sense?

    Hi! You can reference the rulebook for the Influence action. It says you can move an influence disk to an uncontrolled sector where no opponent ships are present, and a wormhole (or warp portal) connection exists with a sector where you have a SHIP or control. The key there is the sector you're seeking to influence must have a connection with a sector where you have a SHIP. There is no prohibition on this if that ship happens to be pinned. I found this confirmed multiple times on the boardgamegeek forums as well, if your friends are skeptical still that's where I would send them next :). Hope that helps!

    The gcds sector IS about to have a combat during the combat phase, but that does not matter in this example - you are AWAYS allowed to influence an empty sector that's adjacent to any of your ships, even if your ship is pinned and about to engage in combat. However, you can't influence a sector that has an enemy ship in it, so in that example you couldn't influence the gcds sector - you'd have to destroy the gcds first. Does that help?

In the example you cite at 14:39, I do everything the influence action allows, but I also use my colony ships in the middle of the action to populate planets. Remember: using colony ships is a freebie thing you can do at any time during any of your actions (or at the end of the round, which is what I do in my part 1 video). Does that help? I have one question about retreating: Lets say my opponent has the initiative . He fires missiles destroys three of my ships, with one remaining. He doesn't have any canons, so he decides to retreat. Can he decide retreat before engagement rounds. Meaning, does my remaining ship have just one shot at retreating ships, or two: One from engagement, one at retreating ships, since he decided to retreat before the engagement round.

    Good question! You cannot retreat before engagement rounds, retreating is something you can do during normal engagement rounds INSTEAD of firing with a ship group. So in your example, you’d get to fire twice against those ships with missiles if you have higher initiative. Hope that helps!

    @@TheGameLocker But I mean if my opponent, the one that fired the missiles, has the Higher Initiative? Also where on the rule book specifies that you CAN only start retreating on engagement rounds? Also i don't seem to find the rule where it says you can't start a retreat before engagement rounds.

    If your opponent that has missiles has the highest initiative, then you would get one chance to fire back at them before they retreat. The ONLY thing that happens before normal engagement rounds is firing missiles, there is NO opportunity to retreat before engagement rounds, the rulebook is clear on that when it lays out the order of the combat phase. The order of a battle goes like this: 1) missiles fire first in initiative order. 2) begin normal engagement rounds, starting with highest initiative ships first. 3) each ship group on their turn can either ATTACK, or RETREAT. This is the ONLY time the rulebook mentions being able to retreat, therefore you cannot retreat BEFORE engagement rounds start. Does that make sense? Let me know if you need further clarification, I’m happy to help if I can!

    @@TheGameLocker Crystal clear. The rules were spread out all over the rule book for this specific situation. I didn't know if the initiative order mattered when retreating. also i realized that missiles are not part of the engagement round: Probably was playing with Twilight Imperium combat mindset. Made a graph, and in became clear Player one Fires missals. Engagement round begins: Player one announces retreat (moves ships at the border where it retreats to). Player two shoots at retreating ships. Player one retreats at neighboring hex End of combat. Yesterday we yelled for like an hour at each other for this specific rule. it got heated. Turns out i was wrong :p. Great game tho. Thanks for your clarification!

    The Discovery tokens are claimed right after exploration or I need to control the sector?

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Your first answer is correct, discoveries that are not defended by ancient ships are taken as soon as you choose to explore the sector, BEFORE you decide whether to control the sector with an influence disc. This was a rule change in this second edition of Eclipse. In 1st edition you had to control the sector to take a discovery, which forced a lot more tactical bankruptcy which is harder for new players to understand, so they changed it in 2nd edition to make it easier.

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    1. Yes, no technology required. 2. There should only be one warp portal token. It’s used with the Warp Portal Rare tech. When you research the Warp Portal rare tech, you immediately place that token on a sector you control, and it connects to all other warp portals.

    Yes! There are two ways to be eliminated (page 24 of the rulebook): #1, if you are unable to pay your upkeep cost even after trading and abandoning sectors. #2, having no ships AND no controlled sectors at the end of the combat phase.

    Woah, good question! Short of asking the designer, I would just houserule that and say you shuffle it back in and draw a different one. Or just call it bad luck and say you must keep it for the 2VP.

    @@TheGameLocker Ok I got a response from them via email: "I would rule as follows: 'Since the Warp Portal Tile cannot be placed in the Sector where the Discovery Tile was drawn, the Discovery Tile must be taken for 2VP.' The other way you might consider ruling is similar to what we have in the FAQ for resolving placement of things from ancient labs by placing in your starting sector (or taking 2VP). However, I think that is unnecessarily complicated since it introduces an exception to the rules about placement. Besides, discovery tile usefulness is already pretty variable, sometimes you get tiles that aren’t useful for your game state and better used as VP. I would argue that in most cases discoveries are better used for their VP anyway so maybe that is just my bias coming through."

    Just to clarify, are you saying that I can’t influence from the yellow Draco ship in the galactic center because the ship is pinned by the GCDS? If that’s what you’re saying, that is incorrect according to the English rulebook p14 under the influence action, it says you can influence “an uncontrolled sector where no opponent ships are present and a wormhole...connection exists with a sector WHERE YOU HAVE A SHIP OR CONTROL.” The ship can be pinned or unpinned, it doesn’t matter, you can still influence an adjacent sector from it. Pinning prevents movement, not influencing. This is a well-known strategy in the community, it just isn’t very common so I wanted to explain it here :). Does that make sense?
