    Dude, I have watched countless "how to play" videos and this is the best one I have ever seen. You have a real knack for explaining clearly without overexplaining. You should really consider doing this for more games, you are way better at it than even Rhado who gets thousands of views per video. Thanks for just jumping into the game, its the easiest and best way to learn a new game. Props for you a million times over!

    I’m not sure there’s any way I can convince you otherwise, but I did no such thing. I make zero dollars on these videos, spent zero dollars to advertise, and did not solicit anybody for comments. There are two comments that are similar on two of my videos, but these were made independently. 14:37 I really like what was done with the lighting in this shot. It really shows how sectors closer to the center are more populated and brighter, while sectors further away are far darker, as if it sits at the far edges of the universe. Its been 2 years, but this video is really great quality.

    Haha, I wish I could say that was an intentional creative decision, but in fact that was just a limitation of the (lack of) equipment I had at the time :). I only had one dim ceiling light and a desk lamp to film with, so any zoomed out shot like this was kind of tricky with basically just the one desk lamp. Happy it worked well for this one shot though!

    Grest video! At 23:10 a little clarification if some viewers are confused, the shields cancel computers, they do not cancel dice. You add up the attacking ship's total computers then subtract the defending ship's total shields. Then subtract this number from 6, and the attacking ship will HIT with a SINGLE die if that die roll is bigger than or equal to that number.

I knew I had to watch another video, so yours being second in the list, I took the plunge. Man, I'd like to echo all of the other below sentiments about your ability to teach. Everything was so clear. The way you covered elements of the player board and revealed them when the time was right was a great tactic. I also appreciated how you used a turn-by-turn approach, as opposed to just covering all the possible mechanics. Please do more videos, and do them on similarly complicated games. A very good instructional video and I particularly like the good acting when something 'unexpected' happens! Those dice rolls though - you must have been kicking yourself that luck turned up here rather than in a proper game. No mention of torpedoes, wait I mean rockets, I mean missiles (not that they're really particularly complex to understand) and impulse power generation (the default power generated by cruisers, dreadnoughts and bases. I'm being pedantic though, frankly, as this is such a well-made, structured and presented video as to deserve the attention so far received. Good show.

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment! For the sake of time I did not introduce ship pinning, that fell into the "10% I don't have time to cover" bucket. I do mention for exploration that you can explore from a ship that is "not engaged with any enemy ships", I chose that explanation rather than introduce the technical term "Pinning". For the Shields, you're right, I thought it would be best to talk about Shields as one of the six basic kinds of ship parts (I didn't include missiles), even though it requires a tech. I chose to play the Orion specifically for this reason, so that I could explain shields easier and show how they work since they're pre-installed on their blueprints. I probably should have taken the extra 5 seconds to explain it's not included with every race. I expect that most players will understand though as soon as they see that the Gauss Shields is a tech that can be researched and connect the dots that way. Cheers!

    i have a question about the blue prints at 21:00 when you look at the cruiser and Dreadnought you see at the bottum middel a small energy sign of 2 at the cruiser and 3 at the Dreadnought does that mean that even if you put a ship part over the nuclear Source that you still have 2 power at the cruiser and 3 power left at the Dreadnought? and if you put nothing on top of it you have 5 power for the Cruiser and 6 for the Dreadnought? After looking closer i see that the interseptor has a small 1 power sign and the starbase has a 3 power sign and no Nuclear Source on the blue print so i assume that i am right and that you always have that minimum of power even if you cover the Nuclear power source tiles?

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    Жыл бұрын

    That is correct! Each faction has a different blueprint layout so I believe those small energy attachments are specific to the Orion Hegemony. In an actual game with them, I don't think I've ever covered up the regular source part, since 1-3 energy is not really enough energy to power what you want - it's just a really nice little boost :). Hope that helps!

  • @SethLadd

    Great video! It really helped us learn the game. One clarifying question: the video says "shields cancel computers" but I think shields just reduce non-6 die rolls. If an attacking ship has zero computers, a defender's shield will still reduce non-6 die rolls, yes? Page 22 of the manual says e.g "gauss shield subtracts 1 from the hit value of each die assigned to it."

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Seth! If an attacking ship has zero computers, then a defender's shields effectively do nothing. Yes, they still *technically* would "reduce non-6 die rolls" as you say, but ships without computers only ever hit on a 6 anyway, so reducing a non-6 die roll doesn't change the outcome at all. That's why I like to explain it as "shields cancel computers", because the only time shields actually do anything is if an attacker has computers. Does that make sense? Please reply if it doesn't, I'm happy to help! Your explanation is technically correct, the rulebook is correct, and I believe I'm also correct ;).

  • @SethLadd

    @SethLadd

    @@sirshakletonfury4833 Correct! Missiles and a more in-depth explanation of combat will be in Part 2 :). The short answer is that missiles are the first thing that happen in a battle between two players. Missiles fire in initiative order ONE TIME (defenders break initiative ties), and are affected by computers and shields just like regular cannons. After all missiles are fired, then normal engagement rounds happen just like I showed in this video. Hope that helps!

    @@sirshakletonfury4833 Missiles fire ONCE per combat, before all the regular cannons, and that's it! No more firing missiles after that until the next combat. You basically get to be Han Solo and shoot first before anyone gets a chance to retaliate. In the first edition it was arguably the strongest ship build to just load up a fleet with nothing but missiles and destroy everything. The downside is that if your opponent happens to survive the missile barrage (say, with Hull and Shields), you must rely on cannons to finish off your opponent, but if you have no cannons with your missiles then you become a sitting duck and you have to retreat. They made some balance tweaks to missiles in this new edition of the game: missiles now consume one energy each, and cost more science to research. Computers also no longer grant initiative so having a computers+missile build doesn't make you faster anymore.

    Had a question come up in a game and the rules are a little ambigious. After a battle when remaining ships get one shot at the populations cubes, is one cube removed per die rolled or per one pip on a damage die? For example, a blue die does three damage, would that one die removed three population cubes or only one?

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    A hit on a blue die would remove three population cubes :). If you're firing at ships, damage on dice CANNOT be split up among multiple targets (unless you have the antimatter splitter rare tech), but when firing at population cubes you CAN split damage among multiple cubes.

  • @rupe1589
    @rupe15894 жыл бұрын

    Still confused a little by combat. The line in the rules that mentions all dice are rolled simultaneously. Does that mean that all ships in a combat, on both sides, have a chance to fire at the same time and then hits are resolved at the end of each round removing ships making for a smaller combat on round two OR is a hit scored and counted immediately upon the completion of dice rolls and ships removed thereby making the retaliaion strike less dice?

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey David! The section you are referring to I believe is on p19 of the rulebook, the section titled "Attacking". It says "All dice of all colors [yellow, orange, blue, and red dice] for each ship type are rolled simultaneously". The key phrase there is "for each ship type". This means that all of my dreadnoughts roll at the same time, and all of the ancient ships roll at the same time. If I have two dreadnoughts I don't roll for just one of my dreadnoughts, and then roll for my second dreadnought - they would roll together. I also don't roll at the same time as my opponent, that's why initiative is so important because the faster ship types get to roll first and possibly destroy the opposing ships before they get a chance to roll. Hope that helps! If it still doesn't quite make sense, try watching my Part 2 video where I go through a full combat example. Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • @TheGameLocker

    @TheGameLocker

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Joe! This is definitely in the realm of personal opinion, so I'm not sure there's anything I can say to persuade anybody if the random elements in the game bother them. I'm in the camp of thinking that the random elements in the game make it EXCITING. Having an upset victory in combat against all odds is exciting to me. I'm also not the kind of payer that feels like I NEED to win to have a good time. This is far from being an "abstract strategy" game like chess with open information, that's not what it was designed to be. Random elements don't inherently make a game bad, or less skill-based. Think about Poker - LOTS of random elements, tons of skill needed to win. I don't doubt that it will bother some players though, I just won't play Eclipse with those people :). Richard Garfield did a really interesting lecture about "luck versus skill", you should check it out if you're interested: kzread.info/dash/bejne/loeblpJxmZDLe9o.html

If you do have a golden tip for me: What should I tell people for convincing them to give this game a fair chance and not be concern so much from the randomness of the modular board, the different tiles, and the dice in such a long game - then I'm here, to humbly adopt your advice..

    @@ryanbrown9102 I'd say that's a fair statement, Eclipse is at its core a resource management game. But this is not a stodgy euro game with a boring theme, this is a vibrant and exciting space themed resource management game that also lets you customize your own ships and chuck handfuls of dice in combat! That's REALLY fun for me. Eclipse really has a unique mix of economics and resource management along with area control and exploration. It is a 4X game like Twilight Imperium that "scratches the same itch" in less time. It does have some random elements, but there are LOTS of ways to mitigate that (computers improve your combat rolls, Planta/Draco races help your Explore tile draws, you can reject an explored tile if it would "trap" you, and you can pass early to get first dibs on the tech tiles drawn). The safest approach would, of course, be to play someone else's copy before you decide to buy. I think it's ranked in the top 50 best board games on BoardGameGeek for good reason. Hope this helps!

  • @TheGameLocker

    3 жыл бұрын

    The stars on the die you're using show you how much damage you inflict on a hit result. Yellow deals 1 damage, orange deals 2, blue 3, red 4. You cannot split up that damage to hit multiple targets (unless you have the antimatter splitter tech that splits the red die), so the orange die would deal 2 damage to one target. Lastly, when attacking population cubes, you CAN split up damage to hit multiple population cubes. All of this is better demonstrated in my Part 2 video. Hope that helps!

    From the Kickstarter page, there was an upgrade you could pay for to get the minis "washed". A wash is pigment suspended in a clear, watery medium; rather than a solid color, like normal paint, it's mostly clear, tinted with color. To use a wash, just put it on; it's really that simple! The wash will flow into the recesses of the model, and when it dries, will apply the pigment to only those areas. Usually, you use this to make details "pop"; rather than 1 solid color, the details are outlined, and it creates the illusion of shadows or underglow (depending on color choice). Like this: Before wash: www.dakkadakka.com/s/i/at/2008/6/wash_front_01-22151435.jpg After wash: www.dakkadakka.com/s/i/at/2008/6/wash_front_02-22150158.jpg
