How to play Deep Purple's Child In Time on the Organ

Музыка

/ @nickfoleyuk Good morning all, for it was morning (and a cold one at that) in my studio today when I recorded a little video for you.
After the success of last weeks Burn tutorial I had quite a few requests and one of them was for a tutorial on how to play Child In Time by Deep Purple (and particularly as its the intro - by Jon Lord).
I have played this a few times in the past so here it is warts and tricks and all for you to have a look at and comment on. May not be 100% right although I think its close, any alterations and suggestions gladly received!
If you have any other Jon Lord tales you want me to attempt for you then please let me know in the comments or contact me directly and privately via the contact form on my website www.hammondforhire.com (keeps the bots away not to put the address here!) and I'll be sure to get back to you as soon as time allows (usually quickly when I am not away in the studio etc.)
Here's a lovely improv by Jon:
• Deep Purple - Child In...
and another 23 years later!
• Deep Purple - Child In...
As you can tell, its as much about the groove and the feel as it is about the notes, and like I say Jon never ever played it the same twice!
Songs chords are quite simple thought out :
tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/...
I thought I would call-out a couple of really interesting cover versions too, that I have come across over the years.
Here's ‪@akusme‬ with a haunting version
• Child in time - Deep P...
Heres ‪@heavyrocktunes3945‬ doing an excellent modern day, clean, take on it : • Deep Purple - Child in...
...and finally this version by / @sina-drums is a cracker:
• Child In Time (Deep Pu... More from me exclusively at / nickfoleyuk

Well done! such an epic song by epic musicians, each time you revisit it you always discover something new. And what a coincidence, I struggle at the exact same parts as you do...IMO the most important thing is to get the feeling rather than play all the notes exactly as the studio recording, once you do that you can improvise and still sound perfect. That's why DP always play differently and always sound awesome.

Really good one, Nick !!! I loved learning this one back in the day, but could never find a singer who could--or wanted to--cover Gillan's part !!! Spot-on with the settings, IMHO: 3rd percussion, slow decay and normal along with the drawbars. Funny thing is I never noticed Jon setting 8787 before: I just set mine at 8887. Thanks for the insight !!!

Hi Nick, regarding the MIJ version (1st part) several years ago Ian Paice told me another position, certainly with percussion in 3rd..

Very nice tutorial! Just a little note: I think, and it sounds like on the original DP recording as well, that Jon Lord used 2nd harmonic percussion setting, instead of 3rd harmonic.

I agree, but it depends on the organ I find. I went back to check on some of his live work and he had different settings to the studio sound that I though he used

Hi Nick, thank you for all your tips, this is my one to you with no offence, try to begin using chords (first and fifth tones) for the left hand, one octave above.

Thanks Stefano, yes absolutely. I know Jon used that live, I think I mentioned it on the video that I don't do that in my band as the bass player covers that area well

I’ve not tried yet. My Leslie’s can take 1/4” or xlr so it’s no problem mechanically.
