I really like how you said WHY sliding is essential rather than just a cool flair technique. It more closely mimics the human singing voice! SO COOL!

Thanks for the 8 steps, I actually seem to be making some progress!! Being trying to self teach bluegrass banjo for a few years and not really got very far. I only recently realised quite a bit of the stuff I listen to is clawhammer and I stumbled across these videos. Very clear and concise, awesome teaching Josh, I'm so impressed already signed up to the breakthrough banjo!! I love the sound of the banjo and have always wanted to be able to play a few tunes for my own pleasure, with your help I am making more progress than I have in ages, thanks man!!

A very well-done beginner series - articulate and carefully thought out. I watched to refresh the small gains I'd made a few years back. Banjo's been in the case too long. BTW, your playing (and singing) are first-rate.

Hi Josh, just want to say thank you. I've got an odd homespun banjo style that's a mix of fingerstyle guitar and percussion(I love that you can bend notes by pressing the drumhead like a larger hand drum), but I've always wanted to bring classic clawhammer style into the mix and never really had the right idea about the motion. Your first few videos in this series were very instructive - I get it now! It'll take some time first to get the speed and then to make the plucking cleaner, but I already see adding it to the mix. I went through the rest of the series and I think you're very thorough about the other basic left hand fretting skills as well. You have a great teaching style that's just patient enough while imparting the most useful skills and techniques. All the best to you.

Excellent. I appreciate that you provided a moderately difficult song and tab at a moderate tempo for us moderately accomplished banjo players. It would be great if you could do more of these so that we could play along as we improve our playing skills. Now if you could include these in your Jam machine...well oh my, I think I'm getting the vapors.

Thanks, Bill. Everything in moderation, right? I am working on some arrangements of various tunes at differing levels of difficulty, and may even provide some form of backup to enhance your practice. Please don't faint :)

Josh, in the second measure it looks like you are hammering onto the fourth string not the second. Is this an optical illusion?

Hey I think I can help. What he's doing is the full fingering for a C chord in G. The ring finger is the one fingering the note he's actually playing. It's good practice to always finger the full chord, even if you are using all the notes. Hope that helps!

Wow there is so much material on that site. I was enjoying playing shady grove today. When I'm back from Jamaica I'll definitely be signing on to that additional course! I've been playing drums for 18 years and guitar just never meshed well with me but clawhammer banjo? Something just feels right.
