How to play Carcassonne - pt 2 of 2 - base set
Ойындар
This video is intended to teach the table top game Carcassonne to someone brand new to the game.
This is not a review of the game, nor is it a strategy guide. It is meant to be a video version of the printed instructions.
I only cover the original/base/vanilla set here. There are a variety of expansions to the game that are not mentioned--maybe a future upload...?

I watch a lot of board game tutorials, and I must say you are by far the best. So clear concise and well shot. Bravo

@Mayson Kade It did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy! Thanks so much, you saved my account!
Thank you for a very proffesional tutorial. Easy to understand, very well explained and it really shows how well prepared you are. And not eventuellt ONCE did I hear you say "Uuhhm" at the start of a sentence as almost everyone else do in these types of videos. Great work and thank you again. I will now enjoy Carcassone a bit more =)

oops, Autocorrect on my phone. "Not even once" instead of " not eventuellt ONCE" =p
I've seen many tutorials on recent game purchases, but this took the cake. Comprehensive, yet simple to understand and well explained. Well done. Thank you.
That was an awesome tutorial! Felt like I was in a college course for a class I actually wanted to attend. Bravo!
Thanks for this no bullshit tutorial. Nice to see someone getting straight to the point without endless yapping
This is awesome, I was reading instructions for this game all evening and could not understand, so happy I came across your videos, great job, everything is clear now! Thank you!
watched part one and two through twice and now about to start. very clear and concise instructions, just hope the memory holds out!!!!
Thank you! This series was extremely helpful. I've been playing the phone app version, but the tutorial didn't fully explain the scoring in detail. This made it all clear. Thanks for your great explanation!
So clear, both visually and conceptually. Great job!
This guide is simply perfect. Good simple explanation saves us plenty of time. Cheers Bob!
I played this a few times and got the hang of it but the scoring for farmers confused me. After watching the farmer scoring section of your video I went back to watch the full two part tutorial in case I missed anything when playing. Really good video and explanations, nice job! Looking forward to bringing in the River expansion (which was part of the base set, bought in November 2014)
This was one of the better produced board game tutorials I've seen on KZread. You should really consider doing others.
Thanks a lot! I ordered this game and tried out the app to learn it. Farmers, castle bonus tiles, and multiple claims finally make sense :) You got another subscriber, great video!
Thank you! I use your clear and concise videos to introduce new players to Carcassonne. Very well done. Best out there.
Thank you! Well produced video! Clearly, a lot of effort and patience has gone into this! Appreciate it!!
I wasted time on several other "tutorials" .... you are the BEST! Many, many thanks!!!!
Outstanding tutorial on the basic game of Carcassonne!
Great tutorial man, clear, concise, well structured. *tips imaginary hat*
Excellent explanation of how to play and score. Thank you it is really appreciated!
Great job explaining the game in an easy to understand way! Thanks!
That was a very clear and professional tutorial. Thank you!
Excellent explanation! Very clear and complete!
Just bought the game and sat down with 5 players to play it. VERY instructional and we'll done!
thanks for the tutorial! I just bought this board game for my youth group, I can't wait to teach the kids this game and play with them!
Thanks, your explanation was much more helpful than the tutorial that came with the app version.
Yes, he mentioned it at 8:54 :) Great tutorial btw. Purchased the game last night. Can't wait to play it
@Tiwoit The T-road tile consists of three separate road segments, and the thief can only occupy one. The little clump of trees is an end point for the three roads.
You are good at what you do, sir.
Great 2 part video! One of the easiest tutorial on Carcassonne I've seen. Me and my wife watch them before playing for the first time and was playing before we knew. Are you making any more videos for the expansions? Have the Big Box and haven't tried Abbey & Mayor or Bridges, Castles & Bazaars yet. Thanks!!
Concise and clear. Very helpful. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial!
Cool game! i have already bought the 5 in 1 package in China. will also order classic C and Wheel of fortune :) Great video by the way... When friends come over my place and I have to explain them the game rules... I just show them your video. We all appreciate the making of this video and your efforts. Thanks
excellent pace and enunciation! great great video! thank you! I am a person that loves rulebooks and reading them (and invoking the rules to the tables dismay) but this was great!
That was a very clear explanation! Thank you
That was extremely helpful. Thanks so much for posting that! Now time to play :)
Thanks for the help, I was wondering if I should buy this for my iPad but I didn't understand what it was. Looks like fun
Hey good question! I can't believe I didn't mention it. The game ends when you run out of tiles (after the turn that placed the last available tile).
@QWERTYthebold In your example you only get points for one farmer. Additional farmers are only needed when competing for possession of the farm. If you have two separate farms next to a completed city--and no threat from another player's farmer--it would be in your interest to keep them separate; each separate farm would then get their own points.
@younggun1981 That's nice to know! Glad you like the vids.
Awesome video! Well done!
Ah! Thanks! Just want I needed! Well done!
Thank you very much. Fantastic tutorial!
muchas gracias, your tutorial was very helpful, well done
Great explanation of the rules! Thanks
great videos, well made and informative thanks
Thank you for a very clear explanation.
Super great tutorial
great, GREAT job on these videos!
Thanks for the patient explanation.
Kiwisoup: The base game now includes the rivers expansion. As I understand it, there's no separate box for it so "Rivers" is just part of the base game now.
This is by far the best Carcassonne tutorial on the net, period! I have a question please, is it possible to place a tile in a place that would make any other tile placed next to it impossible or illegal, therefore preventing that empty space from being filled with any other tile?
@mmillss

Thanks! Not only is placing a tile as you describe ok, it is an excellent strategy for blocking other players from finishing their own features.
Nice explanation, I like it. Very clear and structured! I also wonder if you can do a tutorial on Arne classic card game. There is nothing at all on the internet about: how to play it. Subscribed to your channel too :)
very nice use of the pen to show things.
You are amazing, GREAT video!!
Wow! Thank you for your tutorial, you are just... perfect! Very clearly explained! There's only one thing you seemed to have forgotten: There's an exception when you make a town with only 2 tiles, each tiles count for only 1 point, so the total for the city is 2 points. I would send you a picture of the rules but I can't do it here... It's written under a tile picture. Just saying... so you can check out if you still have your rules if you want! Thank you again!

Thanks for the kind words! The 2-tile city question came up earlier in the comments. The rule changed at some point. The current version of the rules holds to the 2 points per tile model. I think the downloadable rules at the publisher says this. Also the official iPhone app is consistent with this too. At any rate there ARE two versions of these rules in the wild. Thanks again!
Agree - excellent tutorial. Thanks.
@onishchuk4 Correct. Only on the tile you just placed.
Thank you for the good explanation
Thanks for this tutorial!
Yes, the same rule applies to roads as well.
Thanks for the excellent video. I wonder if you could answer a couple of questions I have regarding the game. I haven't purchased it yet, but after watching this tutorial it raised a question: Regarding the cloisters and the surrounding with tiles; are these completely a different thing from the small churches (that look like slightly smaller cloisters) that have the roads coming from them? Do I treat a church with a road just as a normal closed road, or can I surround them with 8 tiles (so long as they match properly) for the 9 points as well?
Perfect how-to!
Best tutorial ever..
Wow very grat Game Tutorial. I couldn't even find a German one wehre the game is so good explaint like here. Great job.
@bsflynn The "T" tile is counted multiple times, once for each road it helped complete.
Awesome. Got this for my phone but the tutorial wasn't very good. Thanks for your time!
Very clear, thanks
Great video. Thank you.
If a feature is completed no follower can be placed on any part of it thereafter. If, for example, red completes a city and places a followers just in time to score the points, red then comes off the completed city and that city cannot be claimed again (nor any part of it). Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.
@h3rshel Follow up: Found this game at a coffee shop and introduced friend to it. These videos helped me explain Carcassonne clearly and made for interesting gameplay! Thanks again!
Looks like an awesome game. I'd like to thank Blackberry App World for making me notice this game in their app store.. With all the glowing review, I wanted to check out what it was all about. Seems to be a pretty cool strategy game. Are there more like this?
Thank you, now I understand!
Thank you!
Could you please explain the expantions for big box 6? Thanks a lot.
Great tutorial, totally love it! Just a small question: how many followers you can use for each turn? for example, you have two or three followers available, can you place all of them in a single turn?
@mmillss
10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Just one follower per turn.
ty really helped!
one thing that I'm wondering about that you didn't go through; how does it work if you want to place a second farmer on a field that you already control ? do you still need to merge that farmer in from a separate field, or can you just place it on your field without merging ? me and my friends really couldn't get along on what was legal to do or not, personally I think you have to merge either way, because it would be too easy to control one huge field and win if that was the case..
@mmillss will you be doing the how to play for the expasion packs?
You know the rule with joining farms and cities and sharing the score? Does that work with roads? (like if 2 unfinished roads that are claimed meet, do both players score?)
@mrtopaz You are correct. You cannot place a follower on a claimed feature, even one you claimed yourself. Merging is the way to go.
Now I realy understand how to play this game.
So I'm guessing that you can't claim someone else's unclaimed tile or one you placed earlier correct? Or can you claim a tile only when placing one on your turn?
image a situation: red player complete scoring a complete route/city and put out his follower. In the yellow turn, can yellow put a follower in the route/city that red has just put out his follower before? If not, how can you keep track of the city already claimed by other but his followers is put out?
I have one question, in scoring a road. Let's say you place a "T" road piece. The red player ends one road with the "T" and then ends a second road with the other road of the "T". Do you count that tile once or twice for each completed road? Thanks. Hope that makes sense.
You said in the first video that you discard a tile if there's nowhere to put it. Does that get put back in the bag, pot, pile, etc... to be used later, or is it completely done away with?
You did mention it. :)
A very strategic game. I'll just go back to Catan. XD Great Tutorial!!!
you DID mention it
7:41 saved my life :-)
thanks man :)
thank for answering. I didn't know the rule that you can only put your followers in the title you just play. I think you should clarify it in your video.
Totally!
kiwisoup My base set did not have it. I wouldn't be surprised if they just threw it in in later releases. It is a very small "expansion" in my opinion.
What about river?
When you have a situation like the one around 7:00... Couldnt you place a second blue on a city-tile that then would later make up the big city that the red is on.. then the city would consist of two blue and one red.. would it then be the same situation as with a farm area with 2 red and one blue .. and the red then only be getting the points??
@mmillss
5 жыл бұрын
If any piece is already on the feature (including your own piece) you can't place the meeple. It's OK, however, if two parts of the city start separate and then combine later.
aren't there rivers in the base game? or was that added in a later edition?
Hi there Bob, A question regarding scoring: If you put a tile down which completes some feature of the game, no one has laid claim to that feature yet, and you don't either (you have no one left to do so with), would you score any points at all for completing something anyway? I would assume not but cannot find anyone specifically saying no you wouldn't.
@mmillss
6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Pettit you are right, no points would be awarded. Unclaimed cities could be useful at the end of the game if you had a nearby farmer.
How does the game end?
what are your thoughts on the app versions? I like them but you cannot beat the real versions!
Question. When you place a tile do you have to place the follower down on the tile placed? At 6:20 he placed a tile down but put the follower on the tile below it. Is that just because it's part of the completed road at that point so it doesn't matter what part of the road you put him on since it's yours anyway? All other situations I would assume the follower needs to go on the tile just placed right?
@mmillss
10 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. The follower needs to go on the tile just placed. In the video I was a bit lazy and put the follower on the unclaimed road as a whole--and probably shouldn't have to avoid any confusion. At one time I felt that it didn't matter, but with later expansions--like the Princess and Dragon--it very much matters what tile has a follower. Thanks for catching that!

Bob Mills Thanks for the clarification. That is what I assumed. I've always heard good things about this game and decided to order it. I've been watching videos on how to play while waiting for it to come in and I came across your channel. Very clear and concise videos. Thanks!
