In this Can't Stop guitar lesson video I will demonstrate how to play all of this funky Red Hot Chili Peppers smash hit note-for-note.
Guitarist John Frusciante starts the song off with some subdued hammer-ons that gradually build in tension. He then begins to pick the notes right before he launches into the main riff of the song.
That main riff is pure Frusciante, funky, tight and fun to play. It may take a little bit of practice to assure that you are muting all the notes required during the entire riff. John Frusciante is for the most part doing some pretty large strums but keeps the main melody notes popping out due to the fact that he is heavily muting all the other strings.
This technique can be a little difficult to do correctly at first. The use of the thumb on the low E string can also give a lot of players a challenge. To make the thumb position a bit more comfortable try moving the inside of your wrist towards your face. This slight adjustment really helps the thumb achieve the optimal placement required to play notes on the low E string.
After the main riff we make it to the chorus. Once again there are lot's chords where Frusciante uses his thumb on the low E string. The C major 7th at the very end of this chord progression can be especially awkward. Once gain, experiment with positioning of your picking hand wrist to better facilitate playing these chords cleanly.
The bridge of the song is reggae influenced with accents on the upbeats and quick chord muting. The nice thing about this section is that for the most part, John Frusciante doesn't use his fret hand thumb to play any bass notes.
This bridge section also includes another guitar layer using arpeggiated triads through liberal amounts of guitar effects. I will demonstrate that guitar part as well in the video lesson.
To end this lesson we will then take a look at the guitar solo. Frusciante keeps everything relatively simple here using just whole step bends and simple melodies.
I think this Can't Stop guitar lesson would be great for any intermediate level player or higher. It does provide some challenging rhythm guitar parts that just about any player would find valuable to practice.
Enjoy!!
Carl..

Agree, It looks so easy at first sight (it's 6 freaking notes) but then you realize it's so fucking hard to make properly clean notes with all the muting going on, either you fail in giving the right muting "background" or in playing clean notes. Drives me mad. Can't even think how John can do that while moving/dancing on the stage

Awesome lessons as always, definitely some of the best out there on you tube. I would however really appreciate just a little more insight into how to achieve the sound for each lesson / artist as I feel that's something that's overlooked in most lessons on the web. It would be extremely beneficial for someone like me who's really progressed with their technique but would still love to improve their knowledge in effects and achieving sounds used. Once again though, awesome vids and extremely greatful. Thanks! Matt

Frusciante is one of my favorite guitar players. I am not a big fan of Funk based music, but I do like some. With RHCP being one of those. Still some of the best Funk songs were made back in the 60's and 70's. Funkadelics and Isley Brothers being the best (in my opinion) as far as Funk Guitar. I don't think the muting is impossible. I don't play it like this, though. I don't use the thumb. I change which fingers are playing the g string based on what feels like it makes sense off the other note being fretted. Explore on your own, mileage can vary.

How to cheat on muting: play guitar wearing a shirt with long sleeves, it should help at least a bit. If it doesn't help, don't worry, you're here because you like the song but it doesn't need to sound perfectly like recording, it should sound the way you like it, improvise and don't be too self critical. Have a nice day/night.

+Steven Garcia no , on this song john uses heavily muting , and he strikes all the strings , and doesn't play the individual notes like carl does here

@@shcxatter2 John doesn't strikes all the strings (might look so tho) but only the ones that give the note plus probably the nearest ones which he's muting. No need to mute 5 strings when you can mute only 3

@@micheleschenetti7791 when you get good at muting, it becomes almost second nature, and it's not hard at all, also there is a video of John explaining his playing, a he says it himself , that he mutes all strings!

Frusciante’s way is the easiest and most fun way to play this song, idk why would someone do it the other way lol

None of these videos go over literally the only important thing which is how to do the muting. The notes are simple. Nobody explains the muting other than “there’s a lot of muting”. Every video!!

Must be done on computer, it’s impossible to mute more than one string 🤷🏽‍♂️
