I'm a classical player who can handle concertos but I'm intimidated by jazz. This is exceptional, and really helpful. Thanks.
As a brazilian I must say its a pretty accurate video :D. But its good to add that is a "fast bossa", which uses a more "samba" bassline, the "slow bossa" (which is the one we reffer when we say "bossa nova") has a less rhytmic bassline (the syncopation of the right hand remains the same in both styles). But wonderful job!
You're welcome Paulo! I never thought I'd find myself teaching Brazilian's how to play bossa novas! Glad this one helped you! Julian
That bassline would groove so well on a contrabass
Thanks Pelforth! I appreciate the positive feedback as always - glad this helped!
Thanks so much for the lovely comment Jonas! I love reading it. I remember when I first got into jazz. I was so inspired but had to find out where to look for information by myself, there was no one I knew when I first started who could show me the way. Really glad my videos are there for you!
Glad to hear this - I've got a new video on montunos coming soon, stay tuned :)
The longer videos are great! These concepts take time and shouldn't be rushed. Thanks again for the great work and bringing the jazz musician's community a little closer together.
Thanks Kypiano! Glad you are learning from these videos, just uploading a new one now :)
Thanks so much Scott - I'm really pleased this video made a great first impression, and I appreciate this lovely comment. Please make yourself at home!
Thanks Duane - great to hear this. I try to make them the length I think they need to be - glad this length works for you :)
I am an aspiring jazz piano player and have been really frustrated at how to go about it. Till I came across your videos. Now I am more confident after knowing and learning that there is a pattern to follow. What a great teacher you are. Thank you so much!

+jazztutorial Yes this is the best tutorial on KZread!
Been stuck in a rut for weeks as to what I should comp with for latin jazz. This helped a lot.
Wow, so helpful. Breaks it down to it's essential parts Outstanding
Thanks Felix, so glad you enjoyed this :)
I love playing the Cole Porter and George Gershwin compositions in the Bossa Nova style! Your ideas are awesome!
Thanks for the swift reply and the perfect answer/link to my question. People like you, who give up their time & skill freely, is what makes youtube such a pleasure. Thanks again. Kevin
Nice! Thanks for the question Kurt. I would play LH bassline and RH chords when playing with a singer, or another instrument that is playing the melody or a solo. It's a good texture to accompany another player with, especially if you have no bass player. But playing this pattern solo piano will get boring fairly quickly.
The best tutorial on bossa nova on youtube
Oh and it's lovely if you can ever play bossa nova piano with a singer - I agree. That's one of my favorite settings!
This is one of the best music theory channels on youtube. I thank you for dedicating your time that I'd have otherwise payed for.
Great lesson. Speaking of left hand bass lines, some of us are still waiting for your video addressing "WALKING BASS LINES."
I'm meant to be learning 'Blue Bossa' this week, and I was lucky to find this. I had worked out some voicings but your video really helped me nail the rhythm.
Excellent Brady! I'm composing a bossa nova jingle and I was wandering how to play the rhythm on piano!!! Thanks man! I love all your videos!
Thanks for your videos!
First time I've watched one of your videos, and I'm very impressed. Clear, simple, straightforward, professional, and direct. Very humble, yet confident and certain at the same time. You're just here to give of your knowledge, and that's wonderful. The graphics were clear, well timed, and enhanced the education. Thank you. I'll absolutely be tuning back for morre
Thanks so much Chris, this comment really resonates with me. I've seen that pretentious attitude all my time studying music, and it really gets in the way. Loved waking up to this comment, really pleased the video helped :) p.s. yes the Slow Hot Wind and Song for my Father are favorites of mine too!
perfect playing~!
This is superb! Thanks!
Thank you for the video. I will use the advice and practice bossa over jazz standards. Right now I happen to be working on Invitation and Lets Fall In Love. I also have Misty at the piano so I will pull that one out again.
Thanks Bruce - those are all excellent choices to play as bossa nova's, I especially love Invitation - one of my favorites :)
I watched several of ur tutorials and they really inspire an help me a lot! thanks for sharing ur knowledge!
Muito bem explicado, parabéns sou inscrito e gosto muito dos seus vídeos.
Hi. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.. You are the BEST teacher. I can't wait to buy the ebook..You are amazing..All I needed are in your videos. Thx so much. God bless.
Worth the wait. Again another terrific tutorial. I was quite thrilled to hear a little Henry Mancini and Horace Silver thrown in the mix. The stuff you do is so insightful and set out in such an unpretentious manner, it can only be marveled at.
Agreed. Your channlel and videos are some of the best in youtube. Thanks pal.
A very useful tutorial, thank you. And your bossa is really cool.
My favorite Cole Porter songs to play in the Bossa Nova style is Begin the Beguine and Night and Day. I combine these into a medley with Gershwin's Summertime and it works really great! Try it and see how you like that combination.
Best jazz teaching channel I've come across on youtube

Love it! That's really helpful!!!
Great tutorial!
This is super, the Root 5 in the Bass and simple chords in the right hand - now I know what Bill Evans was referring to when he spoke of 2 note chords, less is MORE
the length is just fine. I appreciate this a lot man.
i love your tutorials
Great videos! Been studying and playing drums and percussion for years, and had a few stutter-starts at vibraphone (never quite getting up to speed with it, sad to say.) My daughter recently began piano with a teacher with a jazz background, and I'm feeling like it's good for me to understand more music theory. Thank you so much.
Thanks, You Rock Man!!! Obrigado Mano!!!

Yup!! Very Well Done Julian Ultra Clarity!!
I love bossa nova
Thanks a lot! I've really enjoyed watching your tutorial! :)
Thank you very much. very helpful!
Hey PlanBeatz - yeah that's a modulation (key change). It's subtle - pop music used to do this a lot more in the old days. Recently everything seems to stick to one key. I've been listening to the Police a lot lately - they have a good amount of modulation. Just like the song you sent me - they do it subtly. One of my favorite ways to change key is if you're in C minor, you can modulate to the key of F minor: Play a C minor chord, then go to Db major chord, then to F minor. Now you're in F minor

Loved this tutorial, it's so clear specially the subtitles so i can find the part i wanted easily again. But it would be nice to have some mindless drone exercises to get this into hands .. i cannot figure out how to do transitions between different chords in a smooth way
thank you going to start today
Great, Julian! From Italy
