HOW TO PLAY BASSO CONTINUO: EARLY BASSO CONTINUO AND UNFIGURED BASS LINES / In this video we look at an actual piece of music--Giovanni Gabrieli’s Sonata XXI--and see how to add figures to an unfigured bass line. We look at how to apply figured bass rules for early basso continuo, and look at how to play basso continuo pieces from the early Italian Baroque. If you want to learn how to write in figures for unfigured basses from the early Baroque period, this video is for you!

LIST OF STEPS COVERED IN THIS VIDEO FOR FIGURING EARLY UNFIGURED BASS LINES:
1. sharpened notes usually take a 6/3 chord
2. when the bass moves up by a half-step, the first chord is usually at 6/3
3. when the bass leaps up a fourth or down a fifth, the note before the leap usually takes a Major 3rd, even in a minor key
4. look for cadential motion; the most common cadences used in early basso continuo are the 5/4--5/3 cadence and the longer 5/3--6/4--5/4--5/3 cadence (both without a 7th)
5. most early 17th-century Baroque cadences (especially in early Italian Baroque music) are Major, even in a minor key
6. half-cadences often have a 7--6 suspension on the penultimate note
7. notes that pass by quickly in stepwise motion usually do not take a new chord and just hold over the previous chord

This is not really a question regarding the subject of the video (I already asked one). This is a question regarding a future video idea, that would certainly help me and others. Ornamentation: I think you agree that good ornamentation is a staple of good baroque music and it would be an interesting topic for example, how to practice such ornaments (I.e fingering, or how to keep your hand relaxed during the performing of one). We have sources from J.S Bach, Couperin, and J.J Quantz so we don’t lack the sources. Let me know what you think?

Where would a beginner in basso continuo look to find bass lines to improvise over? I found "Del Sonare Sopra'l Basso" by Agostino Agazzari. Where else should I look?

Hello, i discovered your channel a few days ago and i find it very interesting. It's amazing. I practice partimento which is linked to basso continuo. I would love if you could do video on how to play the continuo in different tempi. If there are special ways to accompagny adagio, presto etc..

Not a question but a comment of appreciation! Thank you for your extremely well executed playing and videos - while the topic of each Video is very specific they never fail to give a very organic and well thought out impression of the matter like in the Frescobaldi-Toccata Video for example; thank you for sharing all this experience and Information and all the best for the Future of you and your channel! :)

Do we consider the other instruments/voices when playing the accompaniment. What I mean by that is do we voice lead based on the bassline or based on the bassline and the other instruments? (Let me know if that’s too confusing)

I think you question makes sense to me! So you'll always want to use proper voice leading when playing basso continuo (except possibly in recits, where there's a little more freedom for unprepared dissonances and such). So you can figure out voice leading just from the bass line, technically. BUT, what *will* change is your voicing--i.e., where you place the chords on the keyboard. So you ideally need to find a voicing where you can have proper voicing leading but *also* don't interfere with the other voices by doubling their lines, or being above the highest voice, or other things like that. The number of voices in your chords will also differ throughout a piece or even a single section, but suspensions and leading tones and the like will still almost always need to be resolved properly, even if you drop some of the other voices out because you want a softer volume or a thinner texture for some other reason. Does that all makes sense and answer your question? Let me know!

@@harpsichord Yes that does clear up quite a bit of my questions. So the only rule in respect to other voices/instruments would be doubling and going above, correct?
