How To Play Accordion with FREE Chord Chart - Beginners Accordion Lesson

If you're a beginner accordionist, chances are you're looking for accordion lessons, an accordion teacher or maybe you've searched out some "how to play accordion" videos on KZread. While most beginners could benefit from an accordion teacher or accordion lessons, some might already have ear training or know a little music theory from other instruments but just need a little help translating it to the accordion. The Accordion Chord Chart is a new learning tool developed to help you further understand and memorize chords on both sides of the accordion without the use of sheet music.
In this video you will learn how to play the accordion using an Accordion Chord Chart, we will also go over the Top 5 features of the Accordion Chord Chart including the 120 Bass Accordion Button Chart, the "Top-Down" view, "Half Shades" for chord inversions, and stay to the end for a SECRET ACCORDION HACK that very few accordionists know about!
Please like and leave a comment! This is a new style of video for me so if you're enjoying this learning style and want more, let me know!

I just got this chart this week, and it's already helping me! That tip about using the counter bass row to play minor chords ... amazing. I will never play Am or Em again. I always lose track of where my fingers are when they have to venture far from C. Those keys are dead to me now.

Man, it looks like you’ve thought of everything. I recently “rescued” a beat up accordion, the age and provenance is unknown to me. The brand decal seems to have fallen off long ago but all the keys and buttons still play in tune and the bellows are in good shape. I haven’t picked up an accordion in almost 60 years but I do noodle around with a slew of other instruments. I can tell you, your chart is useful no matter what instrument you play. Thanks for all the thought and effort you put into this.

Thanks you bro for that hack! After that I think we play chord9s! For example: c-major(c-e-g) with g-major(g-b-d) give as c9-major(c-e-g-b-d), with only 2 fingers ! And if we want the c more bass, as tonic, we can puss and the c bass (tonic of c major) with one more finger! And the next level, we can do that: c-major (c-e-g) with g-major(g-b-d) with d-major(d-f-a), we can play c13-major with 3 fingers and c bass with 4th! At the next level, if we want c11-major, we can do that: c-major(c-e-g) with g-major(g-b-d) and f bass! This is so so so awesome!

Planning on buying an accordion sometime next year and this will be such a handy tool for the start! Both the color coding and having the notes of the chords on the button side is so clever!

Great new colour-coded system to help people learn left-hand chords and bass notes, and figure out right-hand voicings. Hello Denny........ I feel so badly for your shoulder. I hadn't had my accordion for very long when I got Covid/Pneumonia last very early January. And like so many others, it almost killed me. Having Covid delayed my start in learning this beautiful instrument. I got the charts you developed. Since I was teaching myself to play, I really didn't understand the chart very well. I didn't realize during this whole year that you had made more videos and am I glad that I did. Either you have gone into more depth in explaining the way the chart works or I am listening more attentively. Now I am studying and reviewing your chart explanations, a year after receiving the charts. When I had recovered from 5 long weeks of my illness, I had rotator cuff surgery. However, I am not a good patient and, like you, pushed my rehabilitation of my shoulder. Sooooo, I play the accordion with BOTH of my shoulders hurting. Oh well........ Life is short and since I am 69 years old, I am choosing not to postpone or stop playing. You are still young enough that you can take the time to heal. I pushed too hard during my physical therapy and now I am in the same boat as I was..... Shoulders that hurt. Well, God Bless you Denny. I am so thankful for your instruction. Lora Slater

Hi Lora! My heart breaks to hear you're experiencing pain from the accordion too :( I would really love to make a "accordion should pain video" with everything I've learned from my setbacks. The biggest thing that's helped me was getting my hohner bravo 48 accordion and always using a backstrap with it. having only 48 bass buttons is a bit limiting, but for a beginner its a lot more practical than a 120 or even a 96. The 48 has the same sound and punch as the bigger accordions, it's just a little limiting with certain "keys" and "chord families" such as sharps and flats, but if you play traditional songs in the key of C, G, F, you'll benefit from the smaller accordion. My 120 roland was almost 30 pounds and wore me out at a very fast rate. I'm not sure what size you have now but I would consider making the switch if you can afford to. I'll be praying for you Lora, I hope that you're able to continue playing and find some great workarounds to help suit your needs. Feel free to visit my website and send me a message on there and I'd be happy to connect with you for a call to get into some more tips that might help you along with managing the pain. Sending you big accordionist hugs right now Lora! Thank you so very much for your support

I agree, learning things properly will undoubtable take you further but this was something to supplement learning for those who struggle with traditional methods. I myself have been faced with learning disabilities growing up and carried it into my adulthood and all of that applied to learning music as well. But as of January 1st, I forced myself into learning to read sheet music and have been getting lessons to help fill in the gaps. Doing a "90 sheet music challenge" right now and it's actually been a really fun challenge. Frustrating at points, but I know it'll be worth it to get into the habit of structured learning.

Hey Bruce!! Appreciate your support brother, yeah I came across that years ago when I first began and haven't heard anyone talk about it... And I use it in just about every single one of my songs I play now. Makes a huge difference and even helps on smaller accordions like the new Hohner 48 I just received by giving a little added range on some songs... If that makes sense. I play a song that uses the chord progression, A, F#m, D, E.... Since the bass buttons end at E, I'd never be able to play a song that used the F#m without using this little hack. Same could apply to the 72 and 96 as you approach the top outer edges. I hope you enjoy the chart my friend!! May it serve you years of learning and fun with your accordion! Much love!

while your tip for the bass is useful, especially if one's aiming for more complex harmony, I would ague that the best route is getting used to the bass jumping, because there is no escaping that, you will be doing this all the time and often at larger distances. that said, you can also do a Am7(5b) or AØ by pressing the A on the counter bass line and the minor chord on the C column, just like you did ;). for more crazy bass chords inversions, check some live Dominguinhos footage, the man has the accordion arcanes all figured out.

Just received your accordion starter kit in the mail today and I am very excited about learning to use what you have put together to learn to play. You should do more lessons to show how to use your charts to break down a song. The way you explain things just makes sense to me which I have had a hard time with the (very few) other accordion lessons online. Most importantly, Thank you for sharing your knowledge with others! You rock!

But I got the middle C right off on the key board. I went high & low trying to find a chart for 41/120 Accordion. I found a crappy one on M. Bay . Thank you so much for the chart & explanation! So, for better understanding, when I play for example a C7 chord in the bass the sounding notes are C, E and Bb? Because I come from the piano and think "isn't there also a G in this?". And when I play a diminished (7th) in C it's C, Eb and A? Similar here, I would expect a Gb as well. Also thanks for the "minor trick". I always thought, why wouldn't they build in a "minor parallel row" (like Am chord under C, Em under G, ..), don't know how good this would be realizable.

You’re very welcome! Yeah I think the one note is omitted because of the limitations the accordion has with its 3 note chords. I thought the exact same thing when I was starting out with the minor chords being more accessible… and years later, adapting almost all of my playing to this new technique, I still haven’t heard anyone mention using the minor 7 instead of the actual minor… such a game changer for me :)

If you’re able to find a good used one on Craigslist or FB marketplace you’re best off buying something from there, so long as it works… be sure to put the accordion through it’s paces before buying it… I believe Ronan from accordion love, Moshe Zuchter made a great “buying a used accordion” video or something along those lines. Hey Fernando! I would recommend getting a 120 bass if that doesn’t feel too big for you. They have all different sizes ranging from roughly 16.5” up to around 19” I believe on the full 41 piano keyboard. Getting something used is a double edge sword. It could work well or it could be something that is fine to begin with and then the pads might start coming off. I believe in the 70’s they began using different foam adhesives that wound up not withstanding the test of time and they slowly come off over time. If you test a used box, definitely go through each and every note chromatically, testing each and every note in each and every register or voicing (ex, master, violin, clarinet, etc.) If you think digital is the way to go to avoid all of this, the roland digital accordions are amazing, I use a fr4x. They’re more pricey but I’m sure you can find a good used one around. I might actually sell my FR8X if you would be interested.... Wasn’t sure about your question with tone F....

Squeeze, I'm confused. It seems the bass notes on your accordion are upside-down or backwards those on the chart. Where am I going wrong? PS, thanks for correcting my other mistaken 'correction'.

  • @SqueezeandThanks

    @SqueezeandThanks

    2 жыл бұрын

You’re right l, it’s upside down but it’s for a reason… the idea behind the layout is that it’s a “top down” view… so you can reach up and play on “top” of the chart in front of you and drop it “down” on the accordion underneath you. It’s articulated the same way the keyboard is, you can reach up and play the shape and then translate it down onto the instrument. Up is down and down is up, which can be kind of confusing at first, but once you wrap your head around the articulation it should begin to make better sense. Coming from some type of other chord chart might leave you feeling confused but this is an entirely new type of layout which I’ve gotten feedback from others and they seem to really like it once they grasp it. So if you’re playing anything on the bass side by reaching up and playing on the chart in front of you, those movements will translate once you drop your hand onto the instrument. So if you’re playing on top the chart going from a C to a G you’re bringing your hand closer to you… going from a G to an F, you’re going away from you…. So when you drop it down on the instrument those movements should translate and feel similar. Hope that long winded explanation brings some clarity to ya haha 😅 lmk if there’s anything else I can help with

@@SqueezeandThanks the Most common one is the one with 120 bass buttons (identical as the type you have). But keep in mind that there are two types of the melody side of the chromatic button accordion. I dont know the official names of them so I just call them western and eastern. And they are mirrored to each other. But the western variant is the only one I have seen in person. So I think that it is the dominant one. If you want to se the difference between them just search for something with german button accordion for the west and russian button accordion for the east. And you will notice that they are mirrored. And again if you will take the time to do this I will never be able to thank you enough!!❤

@@SqueezeandThanks also the chromatic button accordions is scalable just like the piano variant. There are 3, 4 and 5 row variants on the melody side that works very much like the bass scaling does. Because of its chromatic system the 3 row variant can play every note as the 5 and 4 row. The 5 and 4 row are just for more easy access for the notes. and for the bass side the exact same system goes for the chromatic button accordion as it does on the piano accordion so no changes needs to be done there.
