How To Mark Your Bass Buttons - Easy Accordion Tutorial
This easy accordion tutorial shows you how to mark your bass buttons on the accordion. In this tutorial we discuss 3 easy ways you can mark your accordion bass buttons. Marking your accordion bass buttons with dimples or rhinestones will help you feel more confident with your left hand. This quick "how to" guide will show you the right way to accomplish this DIY accordion project yourself at home today.
The accordion we worked on in this video is a 120 bass piano accordion, however the techniques we cover could apply to any accordion or bass button for that matter. We will be marking the C, E and Ab, as well as the repeating E and repeating G#(Ab). Since accordions use the Stradella bass system and circle of fifths layout on the bass side, labeling these repeating bass buttons makes sense leaving a dimple or rhinestone laid out ever 4 buttons. This 5 button marking technique is particularly effective on the 120 bass accordion, more so than the 96 bass and 72 bass models which should be no problem navigating with their respective button markings. Improve your sense of touch and feel on the left hand with this little accordion hack.

I’d love some videos on basic accordion repair that people can do from home. The accordion is a bit different from other musical instruments in that with some common sense and basic screwdriver skills you can solve a lot of problems such as sticking buttons. I’d love to see a video of best practices on cleaning and even changing reeds if you think that’s feasible without a professional.

Hey there! That would make for a great video, I have an accordion that could use that and a buddy who could help me figure that out. Juggling a lot of video ideas at the moment but I’ll try and circle back to this and keep you updated. Sorry for the late comment on this but I hope you have a happy new year!!
Thanks for this video, I've been thinking about doing this, but have been afraid to mess up my buttons, you make it look easy enough, and I've got confidence enough now to give it a try.

Sure is!! Now I just need to do that overhaul on it and get it working again 😂
Thank you for providing Ronen with your video to show me. I think that I can follow you instructions. It really is helpful, as you said, to have the buttons marked. Carol

Hey Carol! Hope the tutorial worked out well for you! If it’s anything too intimidating, the super glue and rhinestone is a very safe bet and isn’t permanent. Lemme know how it went for ya!
Thanks so much for sharing all of these tutorials, especally for all of us beginning accordionists! Your videos are so well edited and presented. Easy to understand and explained. I have learned something each time I watch your videos! Great job! I just subscribed!

Wow thanks for saying such kind words Douglas, this made my day :) it’s been fun covering alternative topics that I think make a huge difference for beginners… anything to push the accordion forward! Appreciate you subscribing and saying hello my friend! Hope you have a beautiful and musical week! 🎶
This was really helpful. The rhinestones on the used accordion I bought recently were so worn down (who knew that rhinestones could be worn down by fingers!!). I love the idea of marking the E and the A flat at the outer edges of the bass range.

Glad you enjoyed the video Jay! Yeah those extra outer markings come in handy for sure :)
For added effect, instead of using a rhinestone, use a 6mm googly eye 😂 I like to practice in front of a mirror so that when I get lost I can easily look at the left hand.

Hahaha that's brilliant! 🤣
Great idea. To avoid the drill bit grabbing and destroying the button I’d recommend using an actual countersink bit. 👍
Switching from a 3 marked bass to a 1 was hard for a while, and then switching back I would play my left hand intros in the wrong key! But over time one learns to feel the bend of the wrist or the tightness of the strap to identify where along the bass rack the hand is. Thanks for making this video, it will help a lot of people out :)

Hey OJ, glad to hear it was helpful! Good luck on the project, let me know how everything turns out!
very inspiring. I took some inspiration from you, but eventually y refused to place single rhinestones, which are gorgeous. Instead, I scratched and erased the top of the buttons. Rough sandpaper or limes will do. Masking around avoids trouble. Folk players would do only this, unaesthetic random scratching. The outcome is nice if the scratching is strong but covered with glittering sand (purpurina, en español). Children crafts.... Nail polish has succeeded to keep it in good shape, yet for months. Take care. You are a wonderful artist
Great video! I will definitely be using this for my full size acoustic accordion.

I hadn’t thought about that for the video, but I wish I did… I think that nail polish would do the trick!
You can do it another way, by cross hatching some grooves in them that way the keys keep their heometry and also are different from the middle C key
my technique is to heat up a pin and drive it into the button :)

A similar technique used on electric guitar volume and tone knobs is to use a soldering iron to make indentations.
i could never figure why all acc makers did not mark those bass notes, i myself do not like playing a box with only the mid c marked.

Maybe someone knows how the rhinestones call in spanish?

Haha I definitely have gotten it stuck before 🤣🤦♂
Please don’t do this. Just glue o-rings on top of the button. Quick and easy and if needed can be cut or peeled off
