How to Play a Chopin Nocturne (performance and tips by Dr. Duane Hulbert)

Chopin's Nocturne in F major shows off the composer's gift of creating gorgeous colors and tone. Dr. Duane Hulbert first plays this gem and then (4:42) gives five tips on how to play it.
Tip 1: (5:07) Sustain the melody by using a deep touch and being aware of bringing out the
beauty of those notes.
Tip 2: (7:07) The LH accompaniment must be quieter than the singing line on the top.
Tip 3: (9:26) Tip 3: Follow Chopin's markings.
Tip 4: (11:54) Push fingers forward on the double notes in 6ths (don't pull back).
Bring out the LH!
Tip 5: (15:01) Use more rubato to make the decorations at the end sound "dolcissimo" (extra sweet).
Dr. Hulbert received his BA and MM from The Juilliard School of Music and his DMA from The Manhattan School of Music. Hulbert received the Gold Medal at the 1980 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and also won prizes in the 1981 Leeds Competition and 1985 Carnegie Hall International American Music Competition. He has performed as a soloist with symphonies across the United States and has given recitals at Merkin Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Benaroya Hall in Seattle. In 2002, his recording of the piano works of late-romantic Russian composer Alexander Glazunov was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Solo Instrumental Recording. David Hurwitz of ClassicsToday.com called the CD “a production that makes the best possible case for this really excellent but sadly neglected repertoire.” Dr. Hulbert taught at the university level for over thirty years.

such a great video! i'm currently working on the con fuoco part and am struggling with the RH a lot. The last joint of my 4th finger tends to bend over to the other side while playing this section a lot and since my teacher didn't want me to keep doing this, I tried playing in a claw shape, but this leads to my hand cramping up. Would you say it's fine if the 4th finger doesn't stay in a claw shape here?
