    Hi, if you pulled down a load bearing wall and you wanted the ceiling to be flush from room A to room B, so it looks seamless, do you lower the ceiling or is there another type of beam you use? Thanks

  • @Bernieclark45

    @Bernieclark45

    10 жыл бұрын

    It depends on the direction of the joists above. If the new beam will go between the joists you can just make good the gap in the old ceiling caused by the wall removal. It is not likely that the two ceilings will be level. In that case cross batten with 2x1 tile batten screwed to the joists and then plaster board over. If the steel has to go under the joist to support them, then make down the ceiling with 3 x 2 hangers and 4 x 2 joists then board over. Remember; to conform to building regulations, you will always need to fix a layer of plaster board to the beam first before boarding the ceiling.

  • @Bernieclark45

    Peter you may be right. However the plasterboard is fix you have to be sure it canot fall away. In this case I am relying on when the ceiling is over boarded it traps the beam boarding in place. I should have mentioned that. So thanks for pionting that out.

  • @timgranthunnisett380
    @timgranthunnisett3809 жыл бұрын

    You should not wedge any timbers in any RSJ steel Web thats carrying a load bearing wall. Steel expands when it gets to a certain temperature, causing movement between steel and the wedged timber (between steel web) causing the doubled up plasterboard to fall. Proper way is to screwfix timber at full length in the steel web and continue with noggins every 400 centres. Fire resistant board will give you the same properties as doubled up plaster board saving you half the work time but must be plastered.

    Surely it would have to expand considerably for them to fall out, I could imagine it could allow for movement and cracking but not for the boards to fall down. Is it possible to stick the wood in with an adhesive?

  • @Bernieclark45

    The temperature difference, beam deflection, and etc should not be that much to cause the wood timbers wedged in the beam to fall. I rather have them installed that way than drilling into the beam web. It would be difficult to drill through that metal, plus I would'nt advise people to go on messing with structural elements. (I'm a structural engineer). Regards
