Try laying several sweet potatoes in potting soil about 4 inches thick in a well drainable plastic flat. Make sure at least half of the sweet potato is showing. Water them and in no time youll have ALOT of slips for planting. Organic Sweet potatoes sprout the fastest.

I planted some Sweet Potatoes for the first time this year. Course all my gardening is from this year. I have the benefit of having some guidance from my aunt and uncle who have gardened for a long time. I planted 25 sweet potato slips and not all of them seemed to have made it. Still the ones that have look good. Trying a Deep mulch Ruth Stout type of garden as well as a traditional type. Gonna be interesting. I appreciate your channel for information as well as encouragement. Keep making these videos Wayland. I'll keep trying. I learn more from our failures than our successes.

Hey did you know that those vines that you cut off when you're harvesting can be planted. We in the Caribbean do not make slips from actual potatoes, we just cut the slips about 12 to 18 inches long and plant them, they do bear very good

Yes. Thank you for watching. I wish I had a green house or other place that I could keep them. It is going to be 38 degrees F in a day or so and the freeze is soon to follow. It won't be warm enough to plant again until April. It does seem like a shame to leave so much to mulch down. Our growing season is way to short.

Ya a lot of areas in the Us to be safe you assume the last frost date potential is Memorial Day or around end of may. Like no joke. I think it was 2010 in Utah we got like 6 inches of snow in late may in the valley in Utah. It’s rare but it can happen.

We have 2 compost bins that we use for our garden. And also use the deep mulch method. However, harvesting potatoes & jicamas are hard on us physically. So my husband created large wooden bins (on 4x4 legs), with trap doors. After the fall harvest of potatoes, I planted lettuces & spinach. We enjoy that until the winter weather stops them from growing. But early spring they regrow and as early as the first of March, we got more spinach. Lettuce is regrowing too.

No. I used to till and make traditionally furrows. I had no luck with sweet potatoes and regular potato harvests still needed to be dug. The deep mulch, no till and minimal dig is making my clay soil softer and softer. I had thought of starting with a hill of compost and some that were planted were actually more in compost than straight soil. I am going to plant the same way this year and see what I get. Do you have luck planting on a ridge? Thank you for stopping by my garden and for the great question.

Around 100 to 120 days. If you mark where you plant your slip so you can find it when the vines really start growing you can check the hill from time to time. After 2 to 2 1/2 months you should start seeing the tops of a potato or 2. Depending on how big you want them to grow. For me, I plant on Memorial Day and try to wait until my first frost or until I trip over one, I go the full 4 months and it is difficult. Hope that is helpful.

You shouldn't hurt them by breaking them apart. You can actually stick a slip in the ground with no roots and they will grow and make potatoes. I plant that way and also rooted in water and the early ones I up pot to keep the roots expanding. Let me know how they do for you.

Going into this winter I will again gather all the leaves I can and mix with the grass I have been collecting all summer. I have a pile of wood chips which I will also add along with a round bale of hay and several square bales of old straw. We also compost along the uphill side of the garden.
