How to Plant Palm Trees | Ask This Old House

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook heads to Miami to plant several varieties of palm trees in a front yard. (See below for shopping list, tools, and steps.)
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse
Shopping List for Planting Palm Trees:
- Palm tree
- Marking spray paint, used to mark the planting hole on the ground
- Bark mulch
Tools List for Planting Palm Trees:
- Tape measure
- Pointed shovel or backhoe, used to dig the planting hole
Steps for Planting Palm Trees:
1. Arrange the potted palm in the yard, then check for proper spacing and placement. If planting more than one, arrange all trees now. Don't set any trees directly beneath overhead wires.
2. Before digging, ask the utility company to check for buried cables or pipes.
3. Use marking spray paint to spray an outline onto the ground around the potted tree. Make the circular outline 12 inches larger than the pot diameter.
4. Dig the planting hole with a pointed shovel or backhoe.
5. Lay a rake handle across the hole and measure the depth of the hole. It should be slightly shallower than the height of the tree's root ball.
6. Tip the tree onto its side and pull off the plastic pot.
7. Carefully roll the tree into the hole, then stand it upright.
8. Backfill around the root ball with the soil excavated from the hole.
9. Water the tree immediately after backfilling.
10. Next, spread 2 to 3 inches of bark mulch around the base of the tree.
11. Water the tree every day for one week, every other day for the second week, and twice a week throughout the summer.

With most palms, it is beneficial to gently scrape or break away most of the dirt from the roots. The dirt may be reused into the same transplanted ground or pot, provided, of course, that the soil is not infested or has mold, fungi, etc.

  • @kevinsaint20

    @kevinsaint20

You’re better off only digging out 1/2 of the distance you want to dig, setting your tree inside the hole, then put your shovel on the line you want to go to and leverage it into the space and amend it. Makes it much easier

For a newly planted tree you do. The water helps the roots grow out so that it can have a greater reach for water. A nifty trick is to start watering heavier about 4 feet away from the tree. The roots with spread out to that point and absorb alot of rainwater.

lol. You could do it in Minnesota though. Build a styrofoam enclosure around it and put Christmas lights or a smaller heater inside. There is a guy from Toronto doing it on KZread. His channel is James Palms

Don't plant palm trees in San Francisco...they cost the city thousands and most of them die. They are simply not suited to a cold city

Well it’s a great thing to use money on to make the city look good. San Francisco is perfectly suited for many species of palm. If palms die there it is because a particular species has gotten a disease like fusarium wilt: nothing to do with the cold.

Lmao I was thinking the same thing. Bismarckias has an unflattering blue colour and the bottle one is just odd looking. The coconut tree in my opinion is the most beautiful palm.

Generic Name coconut trees are a hazard and prohibited in certain parts of Miami. Cause you know... they are lethal projectiles during a hurricane.

@@desp8161 I think Cold hardy palms are the best. yet really I love the Native palms we have in America the most. Sabal Palmettos are the best palms. Then again I love Cold hardy Natives those.
