Thank you. I've never planted anything. I had my landscaper plant our lilacs, and they were dying. I dug them up, and he just planted them down without breaking up the roots. Im sure that is why they weren't doing great. I didn't know if I did the right thing, but had a feeling I needed to break up the compacted roots. Im so glad I did.

Here in Houston, we have lots of clay, so I dig the hole an inch or two deeper, sprinkle some gypsum in the hole, add a thin layer of gardening soil, then apply a thin layer of grub-killer (beneficial nematodes or the BioAdvanced Grub-Killer Plus), because white grubs eat the roots of every kind of plant (grass, bushes, trees). Then, break up the root ball of the bushes, and fill the remaining hole with gardening soil. Water every morning for about a week and watch for mold and insects.

Do a "box cut" on the root ball instead as it's been proven to be best method for new root growth. All of the methods work, but box cuts are best.
