How to plant a pot of Ixia (corn lily)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ixia is a beautiful flower that is typically planted in the fall. But this week Home Depot had them displayed in line at the register and I couldn’t resist buying a bag.
Ixia is a genus of cormous plants native to South Africa from the family Iridaceae. They are winter growers and should be planted in early fall and watered to start them into growth. However, you can plant them now for a late spring display before they go dormant through the summer.

got these last year. growing in zone 10. they are WAY better than the freesias that I grow, they don't flop over but of course they also don't have the heavenly scent of a freesia either. They are cute and dainty.

Waiting to see how these turn out. I've seen these & thought they were similar to Gladiolus. I've just dug out my Gladiolus bulbs for more room. They hog up so much room for just a single stem (60 bulbs!). If these are easy to grow, don't need a lot of staking, & work well as a cut flower, I'll seriously give these a try. I'm disappointed with Glads (even when staked) flopping over & breaking off, every flower stalk was leaning or curving in a different direction, especially after the daily rainstorms here in Florida. This will be interesting to follow for sure. Thanks!👍👍

Do I need drain holes if I plant in a container?

Yes. Drainage is necessary for almost everything. Rice is the exception.

I think I included a follow up in a weekly garden tour. They bloomed but needed to be staked as they fell in rain.
