As a full-time professional travel photographer who frequently leads tours and lectures on eclipse photography around the world, I'd just like to clarify that the upcoming event on October 14, 2023 is not a total eclipse. There is *no* path of totality. The sun's corona will not be visible from anywhere on earth for any length of time. What I believe was intended when they used the term "path of totality" is actually "path of annularity". If you're lucky enough to be located or able to travel to a location along the path of annularity, and if the weather cooperates, you will be treated to a fiery ring around the moon. But you will not see the corona nor any of the other phenomena associated only with a total solar eclipse. This of course also means you will need proper protection for your eyes and your gear during the entire eclipse duration. It is never safe to look directly at the sun (except during the brief period of totality during a total solar eclipse, which will *not* happen anywhere on October 14). It is never safe to use a ND filter or other regular photographic filter on your gear. You need to use a special solar filter to block out far more light than any ND filter can do. Hope this helps.

What if you photograph using a wider angle like 35mm? I've taken plenty of wide-angle photos with the sun in the frame and never damaged my camera

1:51 lol I live right near where you dropped that pin. Luckily, that's the Texas Hill Country so finding elevation to put something interesting in the foreground shouldn't be too hard. Hard part will be trying to figure out what that should be (we don't have camels). Might have to go scouting here over the next few days...thankfully, PhotoPills is an AWESOME resource!

Without looking at a map for specific objects, my thought is to catch it with fall foliage in the eastern US. Where I am, it might be 20%-25% covered, but stick that on top of colorful trees, and there might be something there.

Hola Rafa, I will be just on the edge of totality, Jacksonville, Oregon, but I think I can make an interesting landscape with near totality using a 20mm focal length from a 1300m elevation viewpoint. Can't control weather, though......

Excellent presentation. Yes, photopills helps greatly. Can you look at the total annular phase without protection? A total eclipse allows a naked eye view, but an annular eclipse is still bright

Thank you so much for the wonderful information! I am trying to photograph the annular eclipse WITH an interesting subject. I found my cliff, I found my angle and I feel set up in that way! What I can't wrap my head around is exposing for the subject and the eclipse? I have a solar filter and it blacks out everything except the sun (obviously) so how go I see my subject and the eclipse like the man with the camel? Thank you!

  • @PhotoPills

You can't use a solar filter to get a subject in the photo. You'll have to use a 10 stops ND filter instead (risking the equipmentI). This is what Josh Cripps did for the Camel shot.

Hello Rafael! How are you doing? I will take every precaution to observe this phenomenon (eyes and camera), but I have a doubt. Do you believe that in the total phase of the eclipse at 10° from the horizon from my point of view it would be possible to use a 10-point filter to record? I'll be almost at sunset. What do you think? Best Regards to you all Clear Skies Marcos.

Josh Cripps used a 10 stops ND filter for his shot. But you need to know that there is a small chance of damaging the camera. I can't guarantee you're ok!
