Grace....Step 1 push off rubber, 2 now leap...3 your arm is slightly bent as it comes by your ear (bicep almost touching). 4. Stride down the power line. 5. At your hip snap the ball and follow through so that you arm finishes on the other side of your head and touch the opposite shoulder...So if your right handed, you want you hand to come thru and finish on the left side your head and touch your shoulder...This keeps your arm close to your side at release and gives you more power, control and spin.

My daughter has just started pitching about 6 months ago and I get different response from coaches. This girl just said the first drop grip and release is the same as a fastball, So why not just call it a fastball grip? I guess the more common term is "drop ball"? I also notice a lot of girls have that same motion of the hand turning over like holding a pistol or turning a door knob. Is this the correct release for a fastball, i.e. most efficient? I asked my daughters most recent pitching coach and she told me no that the reason I see that is because they are throwing a movement type pitch. I am not so sure that is true when I see tons of girls doing it and they are beginners as well. My daughter is consistently throwing strikes so I'm not sure if I should challenge this coach. appreciate a response from someone.

Hi Anthony. So what's funny is that's me in the video (over a decade ago!) but I'd love to try and clarify any questions you have. I probably went with explaining it as 4-seam instead of fastball grip because there are girls who grip the fastball in a number of different ways. The "flip" drop is very similar to the fastball, that's why although it can be very accurate it doesn't always get the same type of movement as a turn over drop. The snap is slight more delayed than a fastball. You have to maximize the 4-seam spin to get good down moment. As far release in general, you want the hand to be behind the ball at release and then it can relax into a more neutral position. If there is a forced turn-over at release or if you see the elbow go away from the body that is incorrect. Hope some of that helps! It's been awhile since you posted so I'm assuming you've gotten your answers by now. :)

I was a pitcher in softball in the 5th grade. i perfected an underhand pitch, where it looked like a perfect pitch, but then the ball dropped down just as the batter swung. i couldn't do that in JHS or HS as the playing field was much bigger.
