How To Pick the Right Distortion
Your mix determines the kind of distortion you should use on a sound! In this video I talk about the various kinds of softclipping distortion and the effect they have on tone and your mix. I also talk about some of the math behind these classic saturation curves and why they're useful.

This was a great follow up. So you've defined how to use this tool. Now bring it together with a mix that uses distortion curves + subtractive EQ (cuts) to add flavor to a mix versus just using EQ (boosts and cuts)... maybe those differences aren't apropos and a different set of distortion vs. X is more relevant. But I think you can squeeze one more video out of this that focuses on bringing all that knowledge forward.

I came here on a clickbait title "You're doing saturation wrong". I don't like to be told that what I'm doing creatively is wrong, so I clicked. To my surprise, this is exactly what I love out of KZreadrs. Very detailed analytical and most importantly, the why's. It's far too often people can tell you how to do something but never the why. +1 fan

Fantastic. It's no mystery why your videos are standing out in such a crowded content market, especially one in which super-slick video production is the norm. You're offering a level of understanding, depth, detail and clarity that no one else is, filling in a major gap in the internet audio curriculum. This channel may end up getting real popular real quick.

I reached a point with music production where I can't learn anymore from youtube vids. I already know all the tricks. I've worked with producers who are running festivals etc. and they have been my only source of new knowledge besides my own experiments. These videos have actually taught me something new. I love to know the inner workings and get more theory based with everything in music, and sound design has always remained a bit of a mystery. These videos have really filled that gap and saved me hours of research. Thank you so much. I hope you will make more videos in the future.
I can only repeat what already has been said. The video series on distortion/saturation is great. In contrast to most other production/music youtube videos you actually really explain what is going on, without drifting into the typical esoteric stuff that is not really grounded in anything factual. I was just going to binge some more of your content when I realized that you sadly did not upload any more videos :(. I really hope you will eventually come back to YT and produce some more of these high quality videos. Cheers
Thank you for this series on Saturation.!
He's back! Some of the best explanation videos on KZread :D
Wow I know I'm late to this but I don't think I've ever come across a creator capable of really explaining these principles in a way that's so practically helpful as well. Thank you!
Love how in depth this series is, finaly someone appart from Dan Worall that explains WHY one would make certain descisions, not what descisions one ought to make
These are the best goddamn videos thinking about mixing and music production i have ever seen.

I bet this guy scored some crazy job and that's why he hasn't dropped a video in a while! He's gotta be wicked smart...
Wow, I felt like I was being taught by a music professor in a university or a paid course! The way you explain things that are seemingly complex at first sight in such an easy to understand way is incredible! We need more people like you on KZread. I hope you can make more videos like this in the future, even if they're not as long, just short but insightful tips would be appreciated too. 😊

Brilliant work!!! The whole 3-part series on distortion feels more like a high-quality Uni lecture than a KZread video really. Thank you so much for all your work.
Please come back dude. Just found your channel & would love some more content!
The perfect production channel doesn’t exi… My man out here using Manim with audio tutorials 😍 3b1b would be proud
I was making a song and realized i couldn't really hear the lead in the drop, then i went to check and the eq was messed up, it was cutting some of the mids, then i reset the gain of that band and it worked, after that i added some saturation, another EQ after the saturator and now it is better than it was before. The only reason i did that was because i remembered about your videos, and it helped A LOT. Please, keep up with the good content, you make awesome, high quality and helpful videos. Thanks for being so helpful and sorry for making a huge comment. (Edit: English is not my first language, so sometimes my comments might sound a bit wierd)
Man I’m so glad I found your channel, seriously everything you talk about is exactly what I want to know.
Finally, KZread pushing some quality content........I discovered your OTT video and then watched every single video in the channel as of now without blinking once. You are doing great in respect of creating tutorials on topics that nobody discusses about. This is the exact stuff I am trying to figure out myself. I would love to see a video on compressors, the type of compressors, how it affects a signal before EQ, after EQ, before Saturation, and After saturation.......what are transient designers/processors and what problem do they solve compared to compressors.....etc..... As of now, I am fully hooked on your style of explaining and the subtle comedic gems inside of the videos. Will be looking forward to more videos. Ps. I am so happy that you blew the fuck up....guess its time to make a comeback?
I absolutely love the level of detail you go into in these videos. I don't even know what topic i want next, i just want more!

Dude I just watched all your videos and they are amazing, would be so glad to see more
your videos are so good at explaining the fundamentals of one subject, it's really amazing the amount of basics I can learn from just one video, really help me understand what is happening and what to expect while mixing. please come back with more videos, it's been 7 monthsss
Your videos should be watched by EVERY mixer. This is advice I’ve never heard before, actually using the science behind these decision making processes is incredible. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Casually makes the best video about distortion. I especially enjoyed the mix of great visuals, reference sounds and clear voice over. He also gave a nice sprinkle of history lessons on the top. I had considerable but blurry knowledge on this topic, but this video definitely helped me clear out and separate the different information making it much easier to navigate what type of saturation to reach for in different scenarios. Thank you!
Really, really hope this guy comes back lol
Man. These videos are so good and hit all the right buttons for me. It's just such an engineer thing though. It won't help most people mix an album or pick out the right gear like other videos that most people would be searching for but it is still an invaluable tool. Even for non engineers like myself who just really want to understand the tools at their disposal to hopefully make something different to someone making new hardware we can all learn something from this. Demand makes it much harder to make this into a successful KZread series and pushes stuff like this back into a space where, as a creative in the studio space or even someone developing music tech, you have to get lucky enough to meet someone who can understand and help you with this kind of knowledge. This is the type of understanding and knowledge that is severely lacking on the internet especially in such an educational format.
More videos please sseb!!! We miss you! No one else compares!
hey, please make more videos. this is exactly the content I need. no one else is explaining things like you are

What a fantastic cap to a phenomenal series of videos. I’d love to see more examples of what we should be listening for. Reverb would make a really great topic. Especially if you approach it the same way you did with saturation.
I watched all of your videos on one breath. There's some true gold there for us goldmines! :) please don't stop making such videos, I'm already addicted ❤. Thank you for this content and comprehensive smart presentation.
Your videos are immense, mate. Hope you return with more. There are loads of techniques I’ve been using for years in mixing that I don’t understand the science behind. The theory of synthesis and exploring the different types would be bloody brilliant. Hope you’re good!
Your videos are absolutely killer man, can't wait for your return. I love the amount of detail you present and you clearly stick out because of it. Video topic idea: the math and methods behind pitch and time stretching. It's not a topic I often see talked about yet these tools are used constantly by music producers. There's numerous underlying topics there concerning sampling theorem and I'm sure it would be an interesting rabbit hole that could span multiple videos.
These videos are amazing. So well explained and comprehensive, with fantastic hands-on examples. Hope you come back soon with some more content dude! ❤
This video was A LOT MORE USEFUL than your highly technical video where you went off on tangents about the Fourier transform, without really showing functions... I've just been using distortion plug-ins without paying attention to the saturation curves, but this is straight forward enough that it's worth experimenting with! THANKS FOR THIS!! GOOD WORK!!
Hi sseb, another wonderful tutorial. Looking forward to the next one!
Stellar work, thank you. I'm sure your take on the clip to zero mixing style would go down a treat in a future tutorial.
