How to Pick Any Medeco Lock

The hardest part of getting most Medecos picked is figuring out rotation. Taking the lock apart gives us more clues on how to do it. I highly suggest you do the same with your lock.

    I think this maybe the first time Ive seen a Gem in your hand. Makes sense that the point on the Gem's tup works for pin rotation. I hope to become more knowledgeable of Medecos. The sidebar with gates make it unique a challenging. One of my short hooks has a groove notched out of the surface for rotating pins.

    Wish I saw this video before I started picking my first Medeco. Prior to my first open I researched all over the web to gather information on how to pick my biaxial. I built a "groove grabber" with guitar wire and even a special pick that grabs the pins. No success. It wasn't until I held the plug in my hand (as demonstrated in this video) and practiced rotating the pins with a half diamond or gem. After that I just picked to sheer than rotated the pins with a half diamond and got the lock open. I didn't even need any of the special tools I made.

    Awesome video buddy, I've watched it a few times now over the last month. My question is, how do I no if the rotation is correct? Is there a way to tell, just that with my m3 I have atm I cant pick the pin at all, it's stiff, until I play with the rotation then it loosens up to where it feels like it's pickable. Does this mean the rotation is correct ?

    It's all the rotation of the pins. Pins in a regular lock need to lift to the correct height (same as a Medeco), but Medeco also need to be rotated for a sidebar to drop in and allow the plug to turn. Other high-security locks sometimes have separate pins that control this function (Primus or ASSA), or Mul-T-Lock that have pin-in-pin telescoping design is another way.

    Great vid. One question though, if you are stuck in a false gate or the pin just isnt rotated properly, how can you release sidebar tension without having pins fall out of sheer?

  • @LockFall

    @LockFall

    7 жыл бұрын

    Picking CCW offers the great advantage that even if pins do drop, you are most concerned about getting rotation correct. Once that is correct it will be "locked" in pretty easily. Having said that, if you pick to sheer most locks will go into a false set, which allows you to release most tension to allow the pins to rotate. This is how you pick CW or how I got the last couple pins rotated on my other video CCW.

  • @1864ourvidssuck667

    @1864ourvidssuck667

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'll definitely try CCW but i'm currently trying 3/6 pins in my medeco trying to learn and it often seems like i have it picked to sheer but i must not have the rotation right so it won't open. When i release even the smallest bit of tension to try and get the rotation right, everything pretty much resets from what i can tell and i have to start over.

  • @LockFall

    @LockFall

    7 жыл бұрын

    I've seen an occasional lock that can't do it CW, you also may not have it picked to sheer. How is it with a single pin or 2 pins? CCW for me is personally easier on many locks, but there are a few it didn't work so easily and a CW pick was pretty easy. So I feel it's good to learn both ways.

    With 1-2 pins it feels just like a normal lock without any sidebar. It could be the case that it's not to sheer since there are some weird looking spools in there.. I haven't gotten to the point where the lock responds to any rotation of mine and i basically pray that the rotation is correct and pick it to sheer,

    clovis hamilton that can be typical, especially if the first couple pins have no false gates they will snap into the true gate pretty easy. Try taking it apart and getting a feel for rotation on those 3 and what direction you need to go. then when it's back together repeat that and feel what's happening inside

The company I bought it from told me they are pick proof. But there is still activity in my apartment. Another couple also broke in. And I think it's them and not the janitor. Leila McIlwraith it's unfortunate to hear that locksmiths still claim impossible to pick. Maybe a more accurate claim is unlikely. Have you had a locksmith to do the install and check other points of entry? I would suspect that even if a common lock was picked it would be highly unlikely that a Medeco would be picked so quickly after. But there are other locks much more difficult to pick, I would just be very surprised if picking was actually used in the field. Bypasses and other points of entry are much more likely. Basically my advice is to hire a professional and if the last one wasn't good try another.

    draukan Thank you for the feedback. It was a professional that installed it. I live on the 5th floor and the balcony faces the swimming pool and all other apartments so I know they are not getting in that way. The husband of the forementioned couple told me "Anyone can pick a Lock", like he'd been doing it for years. They are from another country that I won't mention here. Do you have any suggestions for a better lock?

  • @LockFall

    @LockFall

    6 жыл бұрын

    I would first of all make absolute certain that pick resistance is what you need. Otherwise getting a more pick resistant lock won't help you. Having said that, Medeco I would rate in the middle of pick resistance...medium to high security, a very large step up from common locks, but Mul-T-Lock is a little harder (or MT5+ model fairly hard) as well as Schlage Primus. The next category would be what I would call ultra-high security. Abloy and the MCS are in this category, they can still be picked, but they do offer more resistance, tools to pick them are also not common. I would suggest you take a look here for specific models: www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/wiki/beltranking#wiki_black_belt Many of these won't come in a useful model to go on your front door, so that is why a locksmith that deals in the brand is key. Also making sure it's installed properly so that it can't be bypassed is also very important. I also wouldn't put the balcony out of possibility, 5 floors up may seem like a lot to you, but there is not wind up there like there is 50 stories up to prevent someone from coming in that way, especially from the unit above.

    Fine if you want to learn to pick as a hobby but how many people are going to learn to play with this complicated lock to pick it and gain entry? No one. A standard lock is so easy to pick and most anyone can learn in a few hours. This is one that would take even an experienced lock pick on this style of lock a lot of time and maybe they can and maybe they can not.

    Medecos can be junk if you know the key pin code, a key can be cut and you don't need the side bar code because the last key that went in it lined up the side bar, as long as you don't cut the key with the v cut as to disturb the pins it will open the lock. I have made credit card keys and shearpin keys that worked just fine on my test locks.!

    I think this was just intended to be a guide on how to rotate the pins. Certainly when applying pressure to the sidebar with your hand, the bar will not force inward uniformity, however, as with top pins, Medeco sidebars have a"binding order". While the bar does press inward uniformity while in the lock and under rotational pressure, it is inevitable that one pin will bind first, allowing it to be rotated into position while the others spin freely. Once that one finds its gate, the plug will turn imperceptibly further and another will bind, allowing you to do the same. This technique does work (I have used it to pick countless Medecos), but there is a little more to it. Again, I think this guide was just to show one method of rotating the pins.

    I understand the mechanisms of the lock and how to manipulate the pins. And I understand that in order to move out of a false gate you need very little tension. I am able to move the pin back and forth or side to side. My problem, or question is, is there a way to "feel" the pin move out of the false gate and into the true gate? Or is binding order on aligning into the true gate the only trick? Or is it just luck, falling into the true gate from a false gate? BTW, I have disassembled the lock and I am using 3 pins out of a 6 pin core.

    LMAO!! Crooks aren't going to pick their way into your house. It's slow and takes finesse. Thieves are all about limiting their exposure to witnesses and such, and spending minutes fiddling with your door is just obvious to anyone who might see. Thieves are more likely to use brute force techniques like crowbars and sledgehammers, or even breaking a window. So what's truly sad is when people with no clue try to shame someone because they think they know it all. Free life lesson. You don't.
