How to pick and eat crab like a Baltimore native | Where Locals Go

Certain foods are intuitive to eat, like popcorn or a burger. You just grab them and go. Other dishes take more effort and precision, like Maryland’s famous steamed blue crabs. At first glance, the delicacy can be intimidating to the uninitiated. There are the seemingly impenetrable shell and beady little eyes to avoid.
To clear up confusion about how to eat Maryland blue crabs, we went to Baltimore to talk to Damye Hahn, whose family has owned Faidley’s Seafood Market since 1886. Housed in the historical Lexington Market, Faidley’s is a Maryland seafood institution best known for its award-winning lump crab cakes. But visitors can get their crab in a lot of ways at Faidley’s. Beyond the lump crab cake, there’s crab soup, soft-shell crab sandwiches and steamed crabs, among other preparations.

    I learned all about Baltimore food from The Wire. Faidley’s crab cakes, pit beef, lake trout, and Utz chips.

    I'm from Baltimore. And sadly this woman just now taught me the right way to get the meat out of the body. I had to move to wv year ago and don't get to mess with them anymore. But I always wondered how to get that meat out more efficiently and my parents never taught me so thank you to everyone Involved in this video

    Wait a minute... she didnt eat the crab guts?

  • @KmusikOne
    @KmusikOne3 жыл бұрын

    She did that wrong... Correct steps: 1. Take off all legs and claws 2. Remove apron 3. Open crab shell from the side (corner of shell, near the backfin) 4. Eat intestines and mustard from shell (yum) 5. Remove gills aka "the devil" 6. Break crab in half 7. Squeeze body of crab horizontally and break apart 8. Pick and eat meat from both halves 9. Optional- Dip in butter and/or vinegar 10. Option 2- Seasoning from crabs on your hand will flavor the meat 11. Crack claws with hammer or knife to make crab lollipops. Crack other half of crab claw and eat meat. 12. Onto the next one

    That market they talk about is ghetto af. There a 1 or 2 good finds in there, but other than that is very trashy. Walking around feels like visiting the DMV or welfare office.
