I have watched sooooo many videos of crab picking. I like the way this lady picks crab...simple and easy. Also the legs serve as a handle to dip that luscious crab in a little melted butter...just the way I like it. Great video!! I'll be eating fresh local stone crabs this weekend. Will have to order some blue crabs next. Yummy!!

Put the can of seasoning away. Select the first crab with the shell having the most seasoning remaining from the steaming. Remove and set it beside a small container of apple cider, occasionally dip the leg morsel into apple cider vinegar, then touch the steamed seasoning. Save the butter for tomorrow's pancakes. I (a Pennsylvania resident) always instruct new be crab eaters to use the method shown. And if I see them yanking the legs off first I will personally do that to their fingers! My second instruction is use just enough strength to hammer only once. Woodpecker tap-tap songs only fracture shell fragments. Want to try a crab boil once (I like Maryland crab soup) but think steaming will win out.

I've lived in Baltimore all of my life (65 years) and I've never seen them picked this way. I can't wait to get a dozen of crabs so that I may try her method. Also, she looks very nice. I have met her in person many times and she is very classy.

As close to perfect I've seen so far with the exceptions of; you can remove the entire front & back membranes on each half instead of breaking off each leg separately. That way you get about 2" of delicious MD blue crab lollipop to bite at once. She also wasted the meat from each little leg segment which you squeeze with your fingers, then suck to get the meat out.

I agree about getting rid of the gills, but the innards are delicious. There is also fat in the pointed ends of the shell. When we have a Crab Feast, our guests know that if they don't want the fat, just pass that beauty on to me! BTW, I am a Baltimore Boy, born and raised.

This is a perfectly acceptable and fairly easy way to do it for a regular person eating crabs but no professional picker does it like this. My mothers cousin owns a picking house on the Eastern Shore and ALL professional pickers cut the body in half horizontally, leaving them with 4 pieces (top and bottom from each half) and then they basically just flip out the meat from each cavity with their knife. Still a good how-to, though.

Thanks for the video. I am a Maryland Crab eater and I eat mine differently. I think your way is ok but I go for all the legs first, then I take the shell off. I eat the inerds and the mustard is good. Then I break the crab apart and then go through each one to get the meat. Try it this way its much easier then your way. I guess we all have our own way of eating them.

Tom's Adventures ...you need to keep the legs and claws on to give you something to hold onto as you rip off the shell off. Also, no tools are needed. Just use your bare hands and the right leverage at the right points. I can break the claws in half with my bare hands to get the meat out in one piece and I'm a girl. I apply leverage where she is banging with the knife and mallet. I used to use my teeth. For the compartments, I use a claw to dig the meat out.
