I've been using cmos-cooled camera with 3 different telescopes, but time and time again I get pulled back to my DSLR photography, just for the ease of using and taking fantastic photos quickly. Some people think who move beyond a certain level won't touch their "inferior" imaging equipment, but that's not true. I use whatever I feel like and whatever I think is gonna be fun at the time. It doesn't have to be a chore, it's not a job, the only requirement is to have fun whatever you have or whatever you wanna use.

After taking a picture of the Orion Nebula, I bought a C5 spotting scope, an iexos-100 tracking mount, then a 150-600mm lens, now wanting a Celestron 9.25, larger.tracking mount... lol it's addictive...

Thank you for this video and all the tips. Gold... Using Jupiter and its moons to focus is a smart tip that seems to get better chance of success than just trying to narrow down a star to its smallest focus size.

Great video. A hobby the can keep on giving as long as we "injoy what we DO have" a plain old 10in f4.7 dob for now learning the sky. Pushing the limits and understanding each new found target brings a smile. I injoy the (hunt). be kind be safe and treat others as you hope to be treated.

Another excellent video. May I suggest Gaffers tape. Electrical tape can leave a stick residue. Gaffers tape is very strong and never have I seen it leave a residue.

Haven't read any of the comments yet, but in case no one else has said anything, use gaffers tape to fix the focus on your lenses. No residue at all. I use a bright yellow, so that it's easier to see in the dark. ...But don't tape your lenses and think they're set all year long - Nico Carver, aka Nebula Photos, just posted a video on 11-5-21 explaining why infinity focus is variable. Temperature, among other things, can affect infinity focus. Very valuable information in that video.

I typically don't use tape at all for focus. Only focal lengths in zoom lenses. I find myself having to adjust the focus way too often!

Oh man, it is 12pm here and I was just about to go out and try to capture the Orion nebula with my Eos 550 and 75-300mm kit lense. This was an amazing timing, thank you! (Btw I'm a beginner, the only thing I attempted so far is the Pleiades)

I tried last month to photograph the Orion Nebula with a DSLR full frame camera and a 70 - 300 lens. The histogram was too far to the left and any longer exposure would have resulted in star trails, so I will have to wait till I save up enough to buy a star tracker. I will continue to use what I have available in my learning process, until it is time to move on to better gear. At 55 deg North, milkyway shots are not going to include the core, so it has to be DS astro for me

I really follow you a lot . I have recently started with dso. And I have this lense. Can you suggest a good telephoto lense for canon to take this to next level.

Hi, Nice video and I like that your not using guiding. Ive invested in an omegon clockwork system for its portability to try to find somewhere dark. I think in principle its intended for milkyway shooting but I think I can get ok tracking for 60s with a dslr and a 70-250mm lens so will try and use it at 150-200mm. I know your using a 75-300 lens, but is the camera modified? Regards Chris

You can also do this preview in Stellarium, only disadvantage is that you have to downoland it

Will the remote intervelometer not work correctly when my R6 is electronic shutter only?

I was on electronic shutter last weekend and the only way I could get the camera to take multiple photos and it stopped after 1 shot. On mechanical shutter it works as you show. Have I screwed up a setting again?

Excellent Walt! I have a canon 75-300 mm and had some success at the same target, but I suffered a little with focus slipping (no tape) so once you have focus how do you tape the focus to hold without moving the lens out of focus? Thanks! Simon

I usually only tape the focal length down. I've never really tried taping the focus. I did get a bahtinov mask for this lens though. It only cost me $13 and I can get great focus at first. Just gotta check for slips from time to time.

I find that old manual film lenses generally have a rather dampened focus ring that provides a bit of resistance. These would be unlikely to slip. I notice the focus rings on a lot of modern AF lenses tend to be 'looser' (for lack of a better term.) Some time back, I shot some light and dark frames of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an old 135mm f2.5 film lens. I haven't stacked them as yet as I'm new to this kind of photography.

What was the camera body?

Oh also, what tripod would you recommend for the star tracker? I have a tripod with a ball head, but it isn't compatible for the star tracker. Also, if a tripod is good for the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer, is it also good for the iOptron star tracker?

@@deltaastrophotography thank you!! Yeah it is hard to find the SkyWatcher Star Adventurer in stock, and when it is in stock they are asking $550 for it. A year ago, I could find it easy for $400. So, I have the 18-55, nifty fifty, 75-300, and 70-250. Would I need the counterweight kit to use those lenses, specifically the 250 and 300 ones, or can I attach the camera to the star tracker without the counterweight?

Man... Your location seems like an astrophotographer dream to setup anything. (Living in Bortle 8/9 Los Angeles area...)

I was thinking about moving to Chicago right before I started this hobby. I'm really glad I didn't!

Hi, I use instead of tape, 3d printed c-shaped clips. they snap on the tubus of the lens and stop slipping. i have different sizes for different focal lengths (e.g. 100, 135. 200, 300). or you kan use a pvc pipe and cut to the length.

My Bottle 3 sky I guess. I'm able to pick up more Ha since I don't have to shoot through much light pollution!

@@deltaastrophotography That's good to hear. I live in a Bortle 4/5 area. Even with 2-3 hours worth of integration time (which isn't a lot admittedly) my Ha is minimal and comes out noisy if I over process it. Guess I've just got to put more hours in and add a lot more data. I use an unmodded Canon EOS R6. Seeing images like yours inspires people to what can be achieved with minimal equipment.

Super video! Explained everything perfectly to a complete noob such as me. You scared the BGSUS out of me with that mask, I was not expecting that. 😂 Question, if I don’t have a startracker, but an old Canon 400D & a 75-300 f4.5-5.6 lens, could I do 50x 2 sec exposure, re-align, 50x 2 sec exposure, etc. For about 2hrs, or so. Then stack, process, etc. Would I be able to get something similar?

Yeah for sure. You might need to use a higher ISO, but you should be able to get some good stuff.

@@MaartenAnna Did you get some astro imaging with that lens? If so, how did it go? I would imagine with an f4.5-5.6 lens and 2 second exposures, you would likely need to use at least 6400iso.

ive only just recenlty came across ur channel as ive just started to get in to astrophotography! best channel ive found, love how u go in to great detail and explain everything so even a complete noob can understand, u make astrophotography less scary as for a lot of people they wouldnt know where to start, watching ur videos i feel confident and when the rest of my equipment arrives ill be prepared and ready to start shooting the sky! thanks!

How were you able to get such a detailed image straight on the camera?

Longer exposures with the star tracker and lower ISOs show a lot more color and detail!

You could do stacking with lots of short exposures on a static tripod. Though I would imagine that a 70 - 300mm would have a very small maximum aperture - probably around f4 - 5.6. So you would have to push the iso up insanely high - probably well over 6400 iso.

Why not go to 300mm? I have the same kit lens, but on the Nikon side. I've taken some pretty good images with it, for me (a total beginner). Stacking is fine with DSS but I can not process for shit! I have a Sky-Watcher EQM-35 Pro mount but only can go about 90-105 seconds before I get trailing. Another kool video. And I really appreciate your sense of humor. We need more Gigan sightings! 🤣🤣

Ooo a Godzilla fan! Woo hoo! For me personally, things get a little fuzzy after 200mm with that lens. But if it works for you then go for it! And yeah I can't really get much longer than that without auto-guiding. At least not when I'm shooting around 200mm or more

The camera in this video is stock. I have a modified T5i, but I've only used it in one video and people complained lol! I'm shooting with my modified camera tonight though!

And my few shots that I've started to take don't have a lot of range of colours in them. And I was wondering if that was because my camera was unmodified. It's probably also due to my novice editing skills.

Bortle 4/5 from my backyard but 20 mins in the car and I can get to Bortle 2 skies. I just haven't ventured away from home while I'm learning the ropes.

LMAO, you were waaaaay too happy with the duct tape...women in your area should be very afraid! Lol, so quick question. Does Telescopium account for the crop size of your focal length when using the canon APSC or whatever it is? So when I put in my focal length, do I need to account for the 1.6 crop or can I just put in the focal length and the software will correct for the 1.6? I hope I am making sense. What I am asking makes sense in my head, lol.

You have to specify your sensor size in Telesopious. I create a profile and input each of my cameras and their sensor sizes. That way when I preview a focal length, I can choose which camera I'm shooting with and it will be accurate.

Siril, Siril is free on.a Mac.

9:29 I don't know why, but as you are setting up here, the background almost looks fake, like you are using a green screen, lol.

I'd like to know how you get just a light smattering of stars in your image. When I shoot the Orion, Running Man, Horse Head, Flame in one frame, the sky is massively overloaded with thousands of stars. How do you remove most of them? A video showing how to do that would be great. I currently use SIRL and GIMP.

I have several processing videos on my channel and most of them cover star reduction and removal. Sadly I'm using Photoshop. I did see a star reduction with GIMP video by Astro on a Budget. Might be worth checking out!
