Wwau .. beautiful video ... if I may ask you ... in this video you add the astronomik h-alpha filter to the already modified SLR Sony or is it normal SLR and add the filter? What's happen of I use the h-alpha filter on a normal reflex? Thanks in Advance ..

I saved this video to watch later as I am learning astrophotography. I have just watched it and I am keeping it for future reference as it's such a useful video. However I am deeply sddened to learn from you Alyn has passed away, that's so sad. The world is a brighter place for his passed on knowledge through YT. :)

This was the first video I've watched of yours and I was very impressed. I'm a visual observer with aspirations of starting astrophotography. Those photos turned out great especially like the Nightscape with the Orion Nebula. I would be really interested in seeing a similar photo but taken with just a full spectrum camera no filters.

I love these images. I find it fascinating that there are so many different ways to enjoy the night sky. Naked eye, binoculars, camera, smart phone, and different filters. My telescope arrives soon, i'm hoping to enjoy some clear skies.

Your last remark about how these pictures would look to people who don’t know anything about astrophotography was spot on. This summer I shot my first star trails images and when I shared it with family and friends most of them did not know what they were looking at. I had to explain to them what the pictures were about and how they were captured in order to understand what they were looking at.

You could do timelpases yeah but they'd either be red or black and white. And yes, I added the Ha images to some normal images (without the filter). And yes the foreground is also without the Ha data

I am sure in your hands, that filter can do amazing things!

I think to people that know what's actually possible with astro images it adds another dimension. But to photographers that don't usually shoot astro they tend to dismiss it as something that's not natural because we can't see it with the naked eye. It's usually landscape photographer's that have problems with it. But I ask them this "do you see the effects of a 10 stop filter?" That kind of gets the cogs moving a little.

I understand your thoughts about what people think who don't know much about astronomy, but the photos are so amazing and so eye-opening that I think they are as inspiring as seeing SpaceX launch their rockets. Very good photos. I find the wide field one, with those red clouds of nebulosity, pretty amazing. They are not strange to my eyes. This is how we would see space if our eyes were more sensitive. Well done!

Amazing results 😍😍 the wide field shot is mind-blowing! Question on the later. Do you know if it's possible to get any results close to this by using an ASTRO modded camera and a CLS clip filter? (my future set up 😅 still pending to astro mod my A7iii!)

I think you can get the same result using an L-enhance filter if you discard the G/B channels. The L-enhance is 12nm HA (more like 10nm), but you can get a RBG image out of it that's not too far off from natural color if it's processed right. I've messed around with mine a little, but have never really used it strictly as an HA filter to add data to an existing image. The Horsehead nebula picture I took with the L-enhance filter in Bortle 6 looks very similar to yours after adding HA data to the RGB. I think the main difference is mostly the star color, but its not too different after using star extraction and then processing the stars and nebula separately.

i think the h alpha is the most important step you can do in astrophotography. you go another level with it. go shoot the cygnus area, ngc 7000 and around sadr, deneb and enjoy the show

@@tykingcrystal864 the veil nebula is an easy target, you can have great result with any camera but it s even better with an h alpha ( an a O3 filter )

My first thought at that last image was "Damn that's pretty, but it would frustrate me having people not knowing the techniques/astro side of things asking about the weird red lens flares or something". That being said, I love the shots and the work with the filter! Looking forward to more!

Alyn, as the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.... that being said, for me I like to stay as much as possible closer to what we "could" see, and a subtle integration of HA+RGB so the pink/redish doesn't take over the image... but then again, that is just me.

Thanks for vids :) ps - the wide field RGB+HaRGB images I feel would have a limited appeal to those who have some understanding of what they are seeing or at least are curious as to what they are seeing. I think the average punter on the street would find them strange. That said next I have said punters in my company I'll show them your image and see if I can get some uninfluenced opinions.

Have you taken a look at lens performance with this kind of clip in filter? Things like aberrations and sharpness? It will probably be pretty close, but by putting something in between the lens and sensor I'd expect some kind of additional refraction. You would have to refocus, but it would be interesting to see a delta between with and without the filter.

Incredible images! Do you get much periodic error with the star adventurer when doing deep space? What percentage of subs do you usually keep /how much do you end up throwing away? I have the skyguider pro and find that I end up throwing away quite a lot at longer focal lengths.

I need to get around to getting an astro mod camera to pair up with all my sony lenses. Getting the Canon Ra and a lense is too much $$$, wished sony made an astro dedicated camera to compete with the Ra

Thanks! All clip-in filters, or any filter placed between the lens and sensor will shift the focus point inward. The lens will now focus sharpest on stars with it set well inside infinity, perhaps at 6 m or thereabouts. That changes the optical performance of the lens, usually for the worse. Lens aberrations are designed to be at a minimum with the lens at true infinity. But with the focus shift introduced by the filter the aberrations blow up, so corners look awful. Some third party lens adapters can do the same thing - adapted lenses can perform poorly compared to when they are mounted natively, at least with some third party adapters. In either case - filter or lens adapter - the severity of the aberrations varies with the lens and its design, but is usually worse the wider the lens and steeper the light cone. Clip-ins work fine on telephotos and telescopes with narrower light cones. I saw this demonstrated well in a filter test Peter Zelinka did a couple of years ago. The problem isn’t the filter itself but where it is placed and how it changes lens performance. Filters over the front of lenses make no difference to focal position and lens performance. But that’s not practical / affordable for narrowband filters.

Alyn: Nice work adding Ha to your repertoire... I noted you mounting this filter on your modified A7iii - are you no longer using the modified A7Sii, which I assume has a high ISO noise advantage over the A7iii? If so, why?? Thx

I have a full spectrum X-E1 which I use for infrared photography. I'd love to give this a try, but I think I need a budget hydrogen alpha filter that's half decent because that's quite expensive.

This is incredible Alуn! I have written out an analog of such a filter on Aliexpress! This is amazing! Orion just looks cosmic! I will strive for similar results. My setup: celestron sl mount, tair-3 lens, panasonic g7 and canon 6d cameras

you can use a plug-in called star net to remove the stars from your hydrogen alpha images and it will make blending your photos much easier, better on star color too as Ha degrades the star color a bit. still great image

Amazing Alyn ! I was wondering, did you do the last photo by also blending the RGB fir the orion nebula? WOuld it be weird to remove the Hydrogen alpha data for the nebula and keep it for the loop? I am considering astromodifying my camera A7III but I use it quite a lot in daylight so I am not sure I should just instead buy another one (and selling my A7s in the same time). I was wondering : For the astronomik filter, did it feel safe to put it in place ? I have seen several people complaining about the filter being wobbly or a little scary to put over the sensor. Any thoughts on that?

I am considering getting the camera soon anyway, going through the saving process, lol. That’s cool. When you say RGB is that 3 individual color filers? Then what kind of software are you using to overlay the pictures? I have a P1000, but was considering doing Astro Photography & full spec converting. I have the h-alpha and just turns everything magenta/red. I wanted to see solar flares live. It’s surprising way more complex than I thought to do this. Anyways. Your video was really great man and those shots are on another level. Looks completely professional & polished. Looking forward to seeing more of your work/hobby.

Have you tried just the Ha filter with a non modified camera to see the results? You tried use any other filters and combine all the images with colors

You Astro-modded your A7III? I have it too and want to mod it, but I’m not sure how well it can be used for regular photography and mainly video. Shooting in raw should make it easy to color correct afterwards as I do normally, but it’s the video I’m worried about.. could it be corrected with a picture profile or something? Love the video!

So could you use the HA filter without an astro mod camera, or can you only use them on a converted camera? Shot look amazing.

Great content as always. Regarding the widefield images, strictly from a viewer's point of view - I see a potential problem in the color balance between foreground and sky. The sky itself looks fine, the sea below looks decent as well. The green grass/trees/whatever though - not so much. Folks who are into astrophotography know that the source of light in your image is not the Orion constellation and understand the difference in color balance in the final blend. Folks who don't understand what sits behind the presented image however, I think they would find it weird that the source of light in the image is red, while the foreground is more on the green-ish/yellow-ish spectrum. Looking forward for your Milky way images with added Ha channel! :)
