How to perform a Victorian-style Morris Dance - with the Hammersmith Morris Men

Give your 2012 Jubilee an 1897 feel with this easy-to-follow guide, inspired by the exhibition 'Jubilee - a view from the crowd' at Kensington Palace, 24 May - 4 November 2012. For Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 -- the only other Diamond Jubilee in British history - a special commemorative Morris Dance was created. You can see some wonderful examples of how the Victorians celebrated in the exhibition. www.hrp.org.uk

    Excellent video for those curious about the steps, which are trickier than they appear at first glance.

    "Morris dancing is a wonderful English tradition" ... You don't say! But the vast majority of English/British people seem to hate it like the plague ...why is that?

  • @artsed08

    @artsed08

    Because we've been systematically taught to hate our own culture. It's tragic, but a resistance will spark up at some point.

    It sounds more complicated than it is. This is because it is traditional for Morris teachers to associate the words "hop" and "jump" with landing from a hop or a jump, rather than taking off, which is the opposite of the way that the words are usually used. Every bar if music is long enough for the feet to touch the floor 4 times. If R =- "right foot" and L = "left foot" then double steps are | R L R R | L R L L | etc.. Single steps are |R R L L | R R L L | etc.

    European folk dances are so weird. Like most of them probably originated from drunken people in a tavern. XD They're usually cheerful dances though, which is good.

    Men's Morris culture is rich and vibrant. Jolly Boys drinking, singing and dancing is at odds with how the grey flat society would have us live. Morris lifestyle has been perfected over eons as the perfect way for a bloke to enjoy himself, we can drink all day because an approximate ratio of three dances to a pint will keep you on an even keel. We sing drinking songs, sea shanties and chorus songs, the glorious sound of men's voices raised in harmony unites us as a gang. It's tragic that there are so many people isolated from the English Street Dance tradition, there are few other opportunities for a man to live as a man aught to live.
